Bishop: Boycott 'Maid in Malacañang' (The Manila Times)

n 'Maid in Malacañang's' entire cast with Director Darryl Yap and story consultant Sen. Imee Marcos (both center).

Before I fully accepted the role, I wanted to hear it from the creative producer of 'Maid in Malacañang,' I wanted to know if what was written in my script was the truth. The truth was that we were then praying, fasting and making other forms of sacrifices for peace in this country and for the people's choice to prevail. "My heart started pounding when I saw the line, 'Get them out of the Philippines' [in the script.]" In my mind, this was something I did not know, I haven't read, this was something new. "If these pictures would be taken as an authentic representation of what really happened, they would put into doubt the trust that the people have placed in us. We knew the dangers of allowing Ms. Cory Aquino to hide in the monastery. While in our prayer, we were constantly in fear that the military would come to know of the whereabouts of Ms. Aquino and would soon be knocking at the monastery's door. "It would suggest that while the fate of the country was in peril, we could afford to leisurely play games. "Education advocates blame this on the neoliberal state of Philippine education, where humanities, social sciences and language/literacy subjects have been decreased for STEM or tech-voc subjects to be more marketable to companies, especially abroad." "The education system is truly in crisis. Among them is Sr. Mary Aimee Ataviado, who was superior at that time," Costillas said. "Any serious scriptwriter or movie director could have shown such elementary diligence before making such a movie. Bring back Philippine history in high school!"

“The nuns are not wearing our brown religious habit. She said the Carmelite sisters were in fact “praying, fasting and making other forms of sacrifices for peace in this country and for the people’s choice to prevail,” not playing mahjong. Sr. Mary Melanie Costillas, prioress of Carmelite Monastery in Barangay Mabolo, Cebu City, said that while the nuns shown in the movie were not wearing the habits the Carmelite sisters wear, the events shown in the trailer were an “allusion” to Aquino’s encounter with them on the night of February 22, 1986.

We need to keep on telling the story just like how the Hebrews relive the story of redemption. “The truth was that we were then praying, fasting, and making other forms of sacrifices for peace in this country and for the people’s choice to prevail. But the pictures would imply that while the country’s fate was in a balance, we mindlessly were simply playing games. It would suggest that while the fate of the country was in peril, we could afford to leisurely play games.” Thus, if these pictures would be taken as authentic representation of what really happened, they would put into doubt the trust that the people have placed in us,” she added. Ataviado then called on Filipinos not to distort the truth about the country’s history.

Netizens also react strongly to the portrayal of nuns playing mahjong with former president Cory Aquino.

We knew the dangers of allowing Ms. Cory Aquino to hide in the monastery. “While in our prayer, we were constantly in fear that the military would come to know of the whereabouts of Ms. Cory Aquino and would soon be knocking at the monastery’s door. Tan also clarified that playing mahjong in itself is not wrong, as long as there is no gambling involved. “Depicting the nuns as playing mahjong with Cory Aquino is malicious. “The pictures depict the late Cory Aquino together with some religious sisters. It is not the alteration of facts that people should be worried about, but the humanizing of figures who have been vilified in the past. It is an alternative point of view from inside Malacañang. After all, how can the story of a powerful man, family, or dynasty at the moment of their downfall not be a fascinating story? It was just a film. He was given this rare chance to present a known situation and allow people a glimpse into very personal events. I WATCHED the movie premiere of "Maid in Malacañang" on July 29 amid all the controversy leading up to the film's release. Darryl Yap revealed he could tug at heartstrings and not just agitate and provoke. On a personal level, it felt cathartic. Sofia Coppola's 2006 movie about Marie Antoinette interpreted her as youthful and girly, and in the process showed how her story was much misrepresented over time. The props used were the Marcos family's personal things. The Romanovs, Evita, Heneral Luna, Marie Antoinette and more. It is their story. It is one-sided.

The ending, however, is true to Yap’s reputation as a controversial director. After 36 years, Senator Imee Marcos, with the help of controversial director Darryl Yap, took to the big screen to show the narrative from their perspective. Yet Cristine wasn’t the only one who stole the movie throughout the spotlight. However, Yap added elements of comedy through Karla Estrada, Elizabeth Oropeza, and Beverly Salviejo, who played the three loyal maids, Santa, Lucy, and Biday, respectively. A few minutes in, she receives an overseas phone call from the Philippines. She’s in Singapore with her family for medical reasons.
