Nick Kyrgios bests Frances Tiafoe in gripping three-set spectacle at ... (The Washington Post)

The 24-year-old Tiafoe let five match points slip through his grasp in an epic second-set tiebreaker before succumbing in an exhaustive quarterfinal.

Tiafoe then turned defense into offense on a precise approach shot to win the next point, his full arsenal on display in his second match of the day. In the sixth game, Kyrgios had Tiafoe on a string and seemed to be pulling him back and forth across the baseline partly as a strategy and partly to show the crowd how fast Tiafoe can go. Krygios’s defense is offense; Tiafoe has the fitness, patience and deft hands to run down ball after ball in a long rally and more often than not conjures the necessary shot to finish it. Tiafoe was playing in the first Citi Open quarterfinal of his career with all the support and pressure that comes with playing in front of a hometown crowd. It was the first meeting between the two friends, a day Kyrgios said he had been anticipating for some five years. Kyrgios and Tiafoe gave the Citi Open its match of the tournament Friday night, a battle royal full of laughter, fury and electrifying tennis.

NICK KYRGIOS is through to the Citi Open semi-finals after beating Frances Tiafoe in a late-night thriller.

Kyrgios was barely troubled on his serve with Tiafoe's head appearing to drop and the 27-year-old took full advantage as he secured the double break before serving out for the match. Tiafoe was resilient though as he pushed Kyrgios to his limits and soon found himself with the first match point at 6-5. The 24-year-old clearly hadn't managed to regain his composure in the third set though as Kyrgios soon took control.

Nick Kyrgios Serves Past Mikael Ymer To Reach Washington Final ... (ATP Tour)

In an uncharacteristic Kyrgios rally, which featured plenty of slices between the two, the Australian prevailed after 24 shots to seize the mini break and eventually, the set. If he claims the Washington crown, it will be his first ATP Tour victory since 2019 at the same event. "The difference was he stands on the fast and he makes you play that extra ball. He was not at his flying best, showing consistent frustration throughout the first set, but his serve kept him out of danger as he did not face a break point. The role was reversed, the past couple matches I've been on paper, rankings-wise the underdog in my past couple matches, but today I definitely felt like the favourite," Kyrgios said in his on-court interview. He will play top seed Andrey Rublev or Japanese lefty Yoshihito Nishioka for the title.

With minimal theatrics, Nick Kyrgios marches into Citi Open final (The Washington Post)

The Australian made his second consecutive final with a win over Sweden's Mikael Ymer. He will meet Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka, who upset top-seeded Andrey ...

Kyrgios mixed up the pace in the early going, presumably to keep Ymer off-balance as he felt out his young opponent’s strengths. In an eyeblink, he can flick a sharply angled cross-court volley with a deft touch or rip a backhand passing shot down the line. By virtue of reaching Sunday’s final, he is projected to vault to No. 42. While Kyrgios was once the world No. 1 junior, it took him a decade amid the dominance of Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer to reach his first Grand Slam final last month. He engaged in minimal theatrics — including two between-the-legs shots, when a higher percentage shot was available. Each match Ymer won in reaching Saturday’s semifinal went the full three sets. The score knotted at 4-4 in the first set, Kyrgios drifted toward the net seemingly without a clear plan, and Ymer ripped a merciless passing shot as if to underscore that he was not to be trifled with. For Nishioka, 26, it was his third career victory over a top 10 player. And when his serve is clicking, as it was against in a thrilling Friday night quarterfinal against Francis Tiafoe, who he bombarded with 35 aces, there is little an opponent can do except back up — back way up, almost to the fence — and hope for the best. When his head is in the game, what makes Kyrgios a handful is his massive serve and broad array of shots and pace. “I wasn’t afraid of mistakes.” And in his first career meeting with Kyrgios, Ymer signaled that he was a player with serious skill, focus and tenacity.

NICK KYRGIOS booked his place in the Citi Open final after getting the better of Mikael Ymer.

Kyrgios has enjoyed a fine summer of tennis and has reached the semi-finals at five of his last six tournaments. Kyrgios has been in imperious form in Washington and is yet to drop serve at the tournament. “Honestly I didn’t play anywhere near my best tennis today,” the star said after beating Ymer. “The past couple of matches I’ve been on paper, rankings-wise, the underdog but today I definitely felt like the favourite. Obviously my winning percentage behind my first serve would have been high, but from the back of the court I didn’t play well at all. But the maverick came out on top of a mammoth second-set tiebreak and kept his composure to win the third set 6-2 as he wrapped-up the victory. Kyrgios’ semi-final clash proved a more straightforward affair as he won another tiebreak in the first set, before taking the second set 6-3.
