Arsenal look to avoid another opening-day stinker, Everton look toothless and will Jürgen Klopp start Darwin Núñez?
This has been a difficult summer for Leicester. Kasper Schmeichel has left, the futures of Wesley Fofana and James Maddison are up in the air, and the Foxes are the only Premier League club yet to sign a player. A club close to qualifying for the Champions League in 2020 and 2021 found last season did not go entirely to plan, with Brendan Rodgers’ side finishing eighth, six points off a Europa League place. A lot of it is centred around the incisiveness of Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio on the counter, and while West Ham looked short of creativity during pre-season that is likely to be less of a problem against City. After all, David Moyes will not be making plans for his team to dominate possession. The Portuguese’s decision to go awol was surely premeditated as a latest ploy in the push to leave a club there is supposedly adoration for. Erik ten Hag’s first Manchester United XI for a Premier League game is not expected to include Cristiano Ronaldo due to the wantaway striker’s lack of match-fitness. After hosting Aston Villa, Bournemouth next travel to Manchester City before facing Arsenal at home and Liverpool at Anfield. A point at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday may be necessary to avoid the ominous prospect of losing their first four league games and seeing their survival hopes potentially begin to wash away along the south coast by the end of August. Villa fans will be expecting greater things than last season’s 14th place, and if Steven Gerrard’s players are intent on making large strides up the table, picking up three points in games like this should be a must in their hunt for a first top-half finish since promotion in 2019. Conte’s system is based on getting the best out of his front men, and Kane intends to embrace the expectations. When he was denied his wish, he laboured, scoring only one league goal before the middle of December. He rediscovered his groove under Conte, who joined at the start of November, to finish with 17 in the competition and he carries momentum into the opening game against Southampton, having had a proper pre-season this time. Instead the 30-year-old has made it crystal clear he intends to be playing the first-team football that will all but guarantee him a place on England’s World Cup bound flight to Doha in November. Accordingly the consensus is that Howe will start Pope ahead of Dubravka on Saturday. That, in turn, is set to upset the Slovakia goalkeeper and his agent, who has reiterated that his client is too good to be anyone’s understudy. If pre-season is a time for optimism, it has been particularly pronounced at Tottenham. First Antonio Conte committed to the project, then the club made quick and targeted signings. The goalscorer is gone, the England international is out injured for the next six weeks and Rondón is suspended. The Uruguay forward started on the bench when Liverpool beat City in the Community Shield last weekend, but he appeared to be on the same wavelength as his new teammates after coming on in the second half.

Oddsmakers have pegged the quest for the Premier League title as a two-horse race between Manchester City and Liverpool.
Man United's preseason title odds are the longest they've been in over a decade, according to sports betting archive SportsOddsHistory.com. Liverpool, though, finished just one point behind and notched a victory over Man City last week in the FA Community Shield. Tottenham, at +1,400, and Chelsea, at +1,600, are next but are a ways down oddsboards.

Arsenal delivered an exciting performance as they beat Crystal Palace and got a clean sheet to start the new Premier League season.
It was a tough game, but we won at the end, so very good. "It was very good because we start with a win and a clean sheet. Jesus was impressive as Arsenal dominated the opening 35 minutes while Zinchenko's header was the key component of a clever corner routine which allowed Gabriel Martinelli to open the scoring. Arsenal were on the back foot on the opening Friday night of last season as they lost 2-0 to Brentford but it was a different story under the lights across London this time. Eze is a fine player and as he steps up his return from an ACL injury, the highly-rated 24-year-old will surely improve as he steps into the void vacated by Conor Gallagher, who returned to Chelsea after a season-long loan last term. They had to ride their luck at times with Aaron Ramsdale called into one excellent stop to deny Eberechi Eze early in the second half, but Marc Guehi's late own goal gave them a deserved win which will only heighten the sense of optimism around the club.

Arsenal were guilty of causing their own problems in raising the Palace fans from their slumber as a clearance from Aaron Ramsdale was charged down and fortunately for the England goalkeeper rebounded to one of his own defenders. The visitors were utterly dominant in the opening quarter, but it took a set-piece to make the breakthrough. That defeat sparked a run of five defeats in the final 10 games of the season to cost Arsenal a place in the Premier League top four for a sixth straight year.
Jurgen Klopp was not happy with the 'dry pitch' during Liverpool's 2-2 draw against Fulham in their 2022/23 Premier League opener.
“Everybody was under pressure, we couldn’t really break the lines. “We do that usually when they deserve it and the first half – it’s not that they didn’t but when you start a game the opposite of how we want to start it’s difficult. "The best thing is the result actually, that we get a point from a really bad game from my side."

But a point was the least Fulham deserved as they made a strong start in their bid to avoid relegation for a fourth consecutive season when in the top flight. Another long ball into the box towards Nunez caused panic in the Fulham defence and the ball eventually fell kindly to Salah to score on the opening weekend of the Premier League for a sixth consecutive season. Liverpool twice had to come from behind against newly-promoted Fulham to salvage a 2-2 draw in a pulsating start to the Premier League season on Saturday.

It could be a tough start for Forest and they could finish anywhere from tenth in the league to dead last and it wouldn't be surprising to me. While he should score quite a few goals for the Hammers this season, I'd love to know the story that his tattoos have to tell. It will be another strong season for Salah and the Reds and while not attending the World Cup with Egypt will be a disappointment, it will also make for a strong second half of the season where Salah is rested while others aren't. With Christian Pulisic needing to fight for minutes at Chelsea, Chris Richards being in a similar position with Crystal Palace, and Antonee Robinson fighting an uphill battle with Fulham all eyes are on Leeds United's American duo of Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson. Adams is replacing Kalvin Phillips who moved on to Manchester City. Leeds need to fill the massive hole that he left in the squad and Marc Roca and Adams have been tasked with that. Coming off of a breakout year that saw him score 11 goals and assist seven more in Premier League play, Arsenal have surrounded Saka with more quality so that he can make the attack tick. Vieira is building something special in South London and Eze's performances will be at the center of making it work this season. Steve Cooper has a tough job getting their new signings to click, but it also has to be an easier job than last year when he took over the team during the season and got them promoted from the Championship. On paper, Forest have made impressive additions but they'll need to ensure that Taiwo Awoniyi and Brennan Johnson are supported well in the attack. The Premier League is back and with that, it's a good time to gaze into a crystal ball of what may happen in the league while everyone is still on level footing. The only players to best him in the past five seasons are Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane. Vardy is struggling with injuries while he ages while Kane is no longer the most feared attacker on Spurs as that title now shifts to Heung-Min Son who tied Salah for the Golden Boot last year. Sven Botman and Nick Pope are significant upgrades while making the addition of Matt Targett permanent is also a solid addition for them. The biggest point in Nunez's favor over the summer's more heralded move of Erling Haaland to Manchester City is that I see him getting more starts in an attack that can match City step for step. Even if he drifts out to the wing, Salah is able to fill the space in the middle, making Liverpool that much more dangerous.

(The lavish spree undertaken after promotion in 2020 backfired so spectacularly that the idea of recruiting too heavily in preparation for the Premier League has entered the lexicon as “ doing a Fulham.”) He is confident that he can avoid the same trapdoors. “There is a feeling that you have to over-invest,” he said. “The Championship is a great league,” Parry said. As ever, at the dawn of a new season, there is a conviction at Fulham that the cycle can be broken. He is not the only one caught in that same quandary. Nor is he merely something of a national hero, scorer of the goal that sent his country to the World Cup. What is noteworthy, though, is the scale of the drop-off. A player who was far too good for the Championship appeared to be not good enough at all for the Premier League. “It is better to be the mouse’s head than the lion’s tail.” The difference, of course, is the division where he finds himself. He is not simply a Serbian international, a fairly constant presence for his country for the better part of a decade.

In the interest of transparency, I’m actually an Arsenal fan, so it pains me to say that the Gunners will once again finish shy of the Champions League places. Rather, I see Mikel Arteta going from strength to strength and Gabriel Jesus living up to expectations. So why am I predicting them to improve this season? However, for as long as there’s a slight chance that I’ve pulled off a minor miracle and people will start asking me for the lottery numbers, it’s going to be fascinating to watch yet another year of the world’s best league. The reality of the situation is that the ‘big six’ is so strong that it’s very easy to miss out and I’m not actually predicting Arsenal to have a bad season. There is, after all, a world in which Palace could go down this season. But all isn’t as it seems. You heard it here first. The 2022/23 Premier League season has officially arrived! Look, I’m a fan of Bruno Lage and think he has a lot of potential to be a great Premier League coach for years to come, but my nose tells me that there’s a tough, tough season on the horizon at Molineux. One of my more rebellious shouts, it must be said, because everybody seems to have the Toffees locked in for a place in the Championship, but I’m here to tell you that they’re going to surprise people in 2022/23. I really, really, really wanted to predict Fulham to stay up because the fact that the Cottagers seem to be playing switcheroo with Norwich City every season is a worrying sign of the cavity forming between the Championship and Premier League.

But (if) you want to win here, you have to dig in.” Zinchenko and Jesus both joined from Manchester City in the offseason while Saliba was signed in 2019 but spent the last three seasons on loan in his native France. The center back looked composed and confident in his league debut, making key interventions and blocks as Palace chased an equalizer. “We should have scored another one or two, we missed some chances.

Arsenal were fortunate towards the end of the first half not to go in level though with Aaron Ramsdale pulling off an impressive save. City have a tough-looking opener at West Ham United on Sunday, but they now have a chance to establish an early advantage over their closest rivals. Klopp was concerned about Liverpool's injury problems before kick-off -- Caoimhin Kelleher, Diogo Jota, Ibrahima Konate, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Kostas Tsimikas and Curtis Jones are all unavailable -- and Thiago Alcantara may now be added to that list. It can only be a matter of time before he starts. But both moments were products of his movement and energy. Chelsea opens its 2022/23 Premier League campaign against Everton. Here is the complete betting guide for the contest at Goodison Park.
First match of the season, folks, so let’s start on a positive note. The goals total is currently set at 2.5, but I’m not particularly comfortable betting either way on that number, so I’ll forego improved odds for a better chance at winning the bet. I’m still riding the favorites on the moneyline in this instance, but I’m not as confident as I probably should be. This weekend’s match against Everton will be a good barometer of the squad’s preparedness—which was at times questioned by Thomas Tuchel during the preseason—but should still be a strong opportunity to collect all three points. I could not possibly be more excited for the start of the new Premier League season and with it, the return of The Pride of London‘s betting guides. I promise to be better this season, but I can’t guarantee any less drama during the actual matches.

Mitrovic bullied Liverpool's defence in Fulham's impressive 2-2 draw, scoring both goals and offering a brilliant all-round threat.
This was a crucial part of a performance that set the tone for Fulham’s season, in a positive way. That was evident on Saturday as Mitrovic formed a key part of a tactical set-up designed to stop Liverpool from breaking the Fulham lines. “Mitro has his own profile,” said Silva on Saturday. “It is up to us to deliver for him and to take the best from him. This is a player fully convinced of his abilities, full of the confidence instilled by his coach and his team-mates. But he is fiercely respected — and loved — in the Fulham dressing room. In fact, in training, he is the type of player that team-mates probably do not want on their team for small-sided games. Unbelievable. The way he pressed, the way he helped the midfielders, the back line as well…” The way Mitrovic dispatched the penalty spoke of a player with renewed belief, something that left him two years ago in his last Premier League campaign. His aerial work adds more than just goals and he was proactive defensively, and then essential in the final third. Fulham were impressive and so too was the striker with a point to prove. In truth, no one should be too surprised that Mitrovic scored twice against Liverpool. Since the start of last season, Mitrovic has scored 45 goals in English league football, 16 more than any other player. But here he was, at a vibrant Craven Cottage basking in sunlight and unexpected optimism, driving at arguably the world’s best defender and about to send him searching for answers as the ball vanished from sight.

Nothing. VAR should be taken out of the hands of the PGMOL and there should be a trial with a panel of, say, three ex-pros.” He shouldn’t have got the United job but also that job was a forest fire for anyone and has been since.” I don’t know: we can expect consistency in the same game, but the way the laws are drafted, we can’t expect it across different ones because there’s room for differing interpretations – as it goes, I don’t think that’s a bad thing. 62 min Here come City looking for a second, Foden nashing down the right and crossing low ... with Haaland sliding in the like T-1000 on a toboggan. 74 min “Just so you know,” returns JR, “on that Cancelo foul on Bowen (which probably wasn’t even a foul) the yellow card given to Cancelo wasn’t actually for the foul itself. It’s also worth noting that without oil money, Man United might’ve won every title from 07-13, also not healthy, but that said, I’d totally be behind a salary cap and anything else that took state wealth and similar out of the equation. I get it was done to reduce the number of stoppage due to VAR but it is ridiculous. 81 min “Just wanted to chime in in the eternal VAR debate,” chimes in Alexaandre. “I actually agree with your earlier point that laws give a lot of room for interpretation, explaining inconsistencies. These types of manager produce teams which at their best are mechanically effective but they lack a more holistic vision for the game, there is no big idea and it’s becoming increasingly clear that at the rarefied level at the elite of the elite you maybe need one. I was, though, disappointed in Rice and Soucek, who couldn’t really get in the game, but I doubt I’ll be saying that in a couple of weeks. 86 min “I think a good way of contextualising the idea of a Moyes sweet-spot is to look for the Moyes equivalents,” emails Zack Gomperts-Mitchelson. “That is very good managers who nonetheless lack something either when it comes to tactics, charisma or indeed their vision of the game that means there is a ceiling, in terms of club, for their talents. There is one outstanding example, it’s the Spanish David Moyes himself: Unai Emery. Brilliant manager, great results, real silverware on the shelf and he’s never getting a big job again. 90+1 min Alvarez mugs Rice outside the box, scurries right and pivots into a shot, crunching Zouma in the coupon.
Could MLB-style "pillow contracts" end up finding a greater foothold in English soccer? It's entirely possible.
The Athletic’s article suggests that the popularity of pillow contracts could grow in English soccer over the coming seasons. And if Nottingham Forest end up being relegated at the end of this season — as some predict they will — the team won’t be left trying to find a transfer destination for Lingard. One could argue that Christian Eriksen’s six-month contract with Brentford last season would also qualify. In Nottingham Forest’s case, they get a player capable of delivering on the highest levels of the sport.

A cynical view of that might be this is the sort of thing that always happens with a new manager, of course, but the more salient point is that the level of coaching is not something this United squad have experienced. He is the first managerial appointment since Sir Alex Ferguson retired that is both on an upward curve in his career and at the forefront of the game’s methods. There is clarity and - above all - authority. Earlier this month, Marca revealed that De Jong agreed to defer approximately €17m in wages when extending his deal during the pandemic. To do so while refusing to pay him wages that he is owed is another entirely. There is imagination and improvement. For a financially-challenged club like Barça to push a player out so that they can fund a summer of extravagant spending is one thing. Graham Potter is hoping to absorb the recent blow after selling star full-back Marc Cucurella to Chelsea for £60 million, and the Seagulls will be eyeing up a top-half finish. “A club spending fortunes on new players whilst not paying the ones they have under contract their full money is immoral and a breach. If the long and protracted Frenkie de Jong transfer saga has not already been messy enough, there is one way of making it a whole lot messier. @FIFPRO should be all over bullying like this and stop it.” Follow all the latest updates from Old Trafford:
Erik ten Hag's tenure begins with a 2-1 loss in which Cristiano Ronaldo did not play until the second half.
It’s a rocky start for ten Hag, who won 158 games over four-plus seasons with the Dutch dynamo Ajax and twice led the team to the Champions League knockout round. “We went into the game positive, we had a good preseason and it was the worst possible start to be 2-0 down at half-time at Old Trafford. Not good enough. Avram Glazer, the team’s co-chairman, was present for the opener and fans sang and chanted for his family to sell the team. Then we conceded the first goal and that knocked us badly. United threatened in the second half and Alexis Mac Allister scored on an own goal. “There were many players who left, but the spotlight is on Cristiano and that is not right,” ten Hag said Friday ( via the Associated Press). “So I think then do your research and make out many players left, that was what was said.

We huffed and puffed and we got one back and we had chances to equalize, but it’s a bad start for us.” “I thought we had an idea of how to attack and when we could we tried to press and put them under pressure,” Brighton manager Graham Potter said. The offside flag was up against Ronaldo, but replays hinted he had stayed onside. “It was obviously disappointing and the worst possible start at halftime to be 2-0 down at Old Trafford,” United defender Harry Maguire said. United continued to push forward but never came close to an equalizer as Brighton held on for a first win at Old Trafford in the club’s history. Having that real goalscorer at No.9 gives City an extra fear factor and makes them a threat from almost anywhere. He is a major reason why I see City retaining the title. “Liverpool are an incredible team and can beat anyone on their day but I just think, across the pitch, City have better players and that they’re a better side.

When he raced onto Kevin De Bruyne's pass in the 65th minute, opened his body, and slotted home with that sledgehammer left foot, the coolness in front of goal that he became famous for in Germany was there for all to see. His movement is world class when he is losing defenders in the box, he drops deep with ease, his teammates constantly looked for him, and his play with his back to goal is ruthlessly efficient. Haaland is the real deal, and any doubts after he drew a blank against Liverpool were quickly dispelled.
Erling Haaland expressed his joy after scoring twice on his debut to help City to a 2-0 Premier League victory over West Ham United.
A good start." Good start," he reflected. [It was a] good start there is nothing much to say other than that and it was 2-0.
Manchester City sealed a comfortable 2-0 win against West Ham in their opening Premier League game of the campaign on Sunday evening.
However, due to an offside in the build up the goal was chalked off. With a two-goal lead on hand, City slowed the game down to a crawl and saw out the proceedings the way champions do, ensuring the Etihad outfit picked up their first win of the season. The way they played on Sunday, sixth is the highest they can finish this season." For now, though, De Jong remains at Barcelona and United legend Scholes was left calling for his old club to bring in more quality as United slipped to defeat in their first game under Ten Hag against Brighton on Sunday afternoon.

There was also a funny moment in the interview as Haaland used colorful language to describe his last missed opportunity looking for a hat-trick. “In the past we didn't have a reference like him and now have it again but at the same time the guys have to put the ball there, especially in transitions. “But at the same time he's not going to solve all our problems, he's going to add something to us as a team. He didn’t even need to take a touch before setting up to shoot, such was the weight of the pass, and such was the technique required to score. Instead of attempting to round the keeper, he opened his hips and calmly used his left to pick out the back post. There’s an acknowledgement that with Haaland in tow, City’s ceiling must be raised—which is saying something for a club that has won four of the last five Premier League titles—and as a result, the goals and wins must flow. But such is the scrutiny of his move from Borussia Dortmund to Man City, and such is the pressure on him to deliver under Pep Guardiola, that every performance of his will fall under the spotlight.
