Sterling premieres anthology of Nigerian literature with Farafina (Businessday.ng)

Sterling Bank Plc has collaborated with Farafina Books, Nigeria's leading independent literary publishers, to launch a premier anthology...

Temilade Aina, a literature curator, took the second reading from the works of Biyi Bandele’s Burma Boy. He said, “Modern Nigerian literature may have been ‘founded’ by the English based on an assumption – a falsehood, in fact – but the lie does not have to hold any longer. When we decided to believe in ‘A Possible Future,’ we did so with the understanding that Nigerian literature was already of age. In fact, by the time British colonialism invaded the geographical space that would later become Nigeria, there was already a deep-rooted literary tradition in the north of the region going as far back as the 15th century. The 411-page book features some of the best works of 46 literary authors in the country. So, we had literature long before we practiced the art in the colonial tongue.”

The Essence of Literature (Kashmir Reader)

Information can be acquired about the social, political, economic, religious conditions of a society by reading the poetry, novels, stories of its writers.

It seems that literature has contributed to shaping the construction of man in every age, but the imbalance occurs when it becomes an obsolete thing that is not relevant to the contemporary world. Adolescents who live in difficult life circumstances have found through literature a vision of life and hope for the future, and many of them have been able to find their values of life. We are living in a society that is moving away from literature in its inclinations, culture and vision of life, to a society that is gradually sinking into the materiality and dryness of life. Literature is the highest level of humanity because it does not talk about material or money, as it does not seek to reap wealth or material accumulation. Perhaps for this reason, literature appears to be one of the richest human arts, because it bears all that intellectual and human heritage for a group of people called as writers and seekers of truth. The means of literature is language, the carrier of a society’s heritage and its intellectual, literary and scientific achievements.
