Life after an earthquake: a tailor's story (OC Media)

An earthquake that devastated northern Armenia in 1988 continues to affect the life of a tailor in Gyumri.

Having lived through disaster, war, and political upheaval, she holds on to her work as one of the few constants, a source of pride and joy. She plans to work as a tailor for as long as she can. Since 1988, the province has consistently been one of the poorest regions in Armenia, with over 45% of the population living in poverty in 2020, according to the state statistics service. Since its collapse, the couple has lived in a small space that was once a kitchen — one of the few parts of their home that did not fall, as it was at a distance from the main house. Some live outside of Gyumri, others outside the country, but Haykuhi has clients at her door almost every day. Between 2017 and 2020, 41 flats were built in collaboration with the Armenian Relief and Development Association (ARDA). German and Italian NGOs built emergency housing as part of a rapid humanitarian response immediately after the disaster. While no one was hurt, the structure was demolished, and their car left adrift in the river. This is certainly the case for Galstyan, who supports herself and her husband. Galstyan’s workplace was one of the few that made it through; she left only in 1993, a year after getting married. In Gyumri, Armenia’s second-largest city, the impacts of the tragedy are still felt by Haykuhi Galstyan and her husband 30 years later. Haykuhi’s sewing machine takes pride of place, positioned under a window to make use of all available sunlight.

As water supply shrinks, MWD guards against earthquake leaks (Los Angeles Times)

As water supply shrinks, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is installing a 1200-foot earthquake-resistant pipe along the Colorado River ...

“And so now it’s kind of the time to make another one of those big investments to protect our water systems — not only from drought but from these other aspects that threaten them.” [water-supply strategy](https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2022-08-11/newsom-outlines-sweeping-strategy-to-bolster-water-supplies), as well as President Biden’s infrastructure bill, are both important steps in the right direction. Pat Brown funded a $1.75 billion water initiative in 1959 that eventually became the State Water Project, which now provides water to more than 23 million Californians. He said there is a growing consensus that it’s time to approach that level of investment again, particularly since so much has changed since then. [break ground on the first phase](https://water.ca.gov/News/News-Releases/2022/Jan-21/Friant-Kern-Canal-Groundbreaking) of a $500 million project to shore up that sinking canal, which was showing visible cracks and other signs of damage. Officials had feared that the damage could send a 30-foot wall of water flooding into communities below, which would have made it “We can build our system in a way to respond to these challenges, but also if something happens, we are able to adapt and respond quickly to move water around.” But he noted that another California hazard — wildfires — can also create issues for the state’s water suppliers as New research shows how California could fix it](https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2022-06-04/will-californias-central-valley-stop-sinking) In the late 1960s, about 300 feet of the pipeline had to be replaced after several cracks appeared, officials said. “And as a result, it constantly demands our attention — whether that’s repairing parts of the system that have reached an age where they need tender loving care and replacement, or addressing newly discovered problems like their vulnerability to earthquakes.” Officials said it was a significant step in securing the state’s water future.

Backroom deal to change earthquake standards in hospitals collapses (Los Angeles Times)

A deal to weaken legally required — and costly — seismic upgrades to California hospitals collapsed Tuesday.

In exchange, unions would see the minimum wage for healthcare workers raised to between $19 and $24 an hour beginning Jan. The agreement between the two would have required lawmakers to sign off on the deal before the end of the legislative session Aug. Before the deal emerged, the hospital association and SEIU-UHW had been locked in a fierce battle over raising the minimum wage in Los Angeles County for hospital workers.

On 14 December 2021, a 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia; its epicentre was located just under the seabed near the island of Flores.

Three missions to Venus have been accepted for the early 2030s and several teams are working on balloon-based seismic monitoring. “We don’t know how it’s made inside, and on Earth, seismology is one of the best tools to figure that out.” “The story for our interest in Venus is that we know nothing of its interior,” said Raphaël Garcia, from the University of Toulouse, France.
