D.J. James previews Saturday's MLB game between the Angels and Blue Jays, including betting odds and a prediction.
The Blue Jays just do not look like themselves now, and there is a reason to fade them. The only concern to backing them would be the bullpen, but it is worth the risk. Taylor Ward, David Fletcher, Mike Trout and Ohtani are the Angels above a .325 xwOBA off of righties in August. He does hold teams to a 30.9% hard hit rate, ranking in the 91st percentile. Luckily for the Angels, Ohtani can go five-plus innings in a start. Matt Duffy, Jared Walsh, Anthony Rendon and Mickey Moniak are on the IL. This does not bode well against Ohtani, since he is as consistent on the mound as they come. Jimmy Herget is the only reliever under the 4.00 mark, so Ohtani going deeper into this game will assist Angels-backers immensely. The Los Angeles Angels are at a crossroads with their owner exploring selling the team. The Blue Jays have seemingly only had a few bats on fire against righties lately. No one has been able to replicate this prototype of both sides of the ball since the likes of Babe Ruth. The usual suspects are still performing this season with miniscule production from the bottom of the lineup.
Alek Manoah and Shohei Ohtani didn't disappoint with a classic pitcher's duel in Saturday's Blue Jays vs Angels game.
While Manoah won the matchup two strikes later, inducing a bouncer back to the mound and a near double play, Ohtani did move the eventual first run over to third. The only issue was Ohtani was better, preventing Toronto from even sniffing a score. In the third, Ohtani dotted a blazing fastball on the outside corner to George Springer, freezing Toronto's leadoff hitter for the first of Ohtani's three punch-outs looking. As the innings ticked on and the pair of starters traded donuts, Manoah's velocity increased, though, and the outs came easier. New to the Canadian crowd, though, was the other half of his two-way game. But Alek Manoah and Shohei Ohtani delivered the expected show.

That was the first of 11 consecutive hitters that Ohtani retired. I was able to get ahead with them later in the game.” “The add-on run late by Squid was huge. From the second through the seventh, Ohtani worked six innings on 81 pitches. “I just started doing it so obviously I need to work on the command,” Ohtani said, “but my four-seam was working. But a loss to one of the game’s current greats means the Blue Jays will be trying to stave off a sweep when the series concludes Sunday. The discomfort forced him out of Friday’s game early, but he was available off the bench if needed on Saturday. With their centre fielder back, the Blue Jays can now rotate others through the designated hitter spot to get them partial days off. They seem to have a lot of fun playing with each other. But where the Blue Jays faltered in all phases of the game Friday, it’s hard to find much fault with their effort Saturday. Schneider was ejected for arguing balls and strikes in the top of the eighth, at which point bench coach Casey Candaele took over as acting manager. Manoah began the day with diminished velocity, but his fastball picked up speed as the afternoon progressed and he ended up topping out at 96.2 m.p.h. He lowered his season ERA to 2.67 with the outing – and remember, he has 27 home runs, too. while mixing in his hard slider and disappearing splitter on his way to nine strikeouts of his own. Still, both belong in the American League Cy Young conversation along with the likes of Justin Verlander, Shane McClanahan and Dylan Cease. “He’s a Babe Ruth in a lot of ways. Ultimately, Ohtani proved too much for the Blue Jays this time, while a Luis Rengifo RBI single proved to be the game winner as the home team lost 2-0 in front of a sellout crowd of 45,311.

He has a 6.94 ERA over his last 81 2/3 innings in the majors, tossing 33 2/3 frames with Toronto in 2020 and then 48 innings with the Phillies last year. At the time of the signing, Rosenthal was recovering from a hamstring strain and was still sidelined when the Brewers landed Rosenthal (and his contract) at the trade deadline in a swap with San Francisco. On his way to a career-high 52 in 2017, he hit his 50th homer in the Yankees' 156th game. The Rangers signed him to a minor league contract, added him to the taxi squad on Friday and announced he will start on Saturday. "It's really special to get to have the best seat in the house every night for the Aaron Judge show," he insisted. Texas is 7-4 in Beasley's 11 games as manager as he auditions for the job on a permanent basis. Aaron Judge has a chance to reach 50 home runs in a season for the second time in his career Saturday night when the New York Yankees go after a third straight victory over the host Oakland Athletics. But eventually, Rodriguez (2-3, 3.89 ERA) got back in the fold, made a couple rehab starts in the minors and returned to big-league action on Sunday, pitching five scoreless innings in a 4-0 Detroit win over the Los Angeles Angels. The Detroit Tigers are in the bottom of every major category in hitting across MLB but they get a matchup with Dallas Keuchel today. Northwestern also finished the 2021 season with a 3-9 record, which included a 56-7 loss to Nebraska in October. "We've had a lot of great hitters in this franchise, and obviously, Mike's going to go down as one of the best," Angels interim manager Phil Nevin said. "We want him to be the best version of himself, and we don't want to take away from what he's doing at the plate.

to go before free agency, pushing most of their chips into the centre of the table. “He kind of dialled it in and did his thing,” Jays manager John Schneider said afterwards. We know the Los Angeles Angels season is ending in disappointment once again. After a couple years of adding and building — exactly what the Jays have done over the last three winters to get to this point of true contention — the Padres’ disappointing finishes fuelled their fire for aggressive personnel change. We do not yet know what fate the baseball gods have in store for the Toronto Blue Jays over the next two months, and the ending will be important in this context because success or failure is going to play a massive role in dictating their off-season plans heading into 2023. Add in his 40-homer bat from the left side of the box — the Jays rank last in homers by left-handed hitters since the start of the 2021 season — and you start to envision something closer to the Soto package rather than anything we’ve ever seen dealt for a player as close to free agency as Ohtani is.

The Chicago Cubs make so much sense to trade for Shohei Ohtani and then sign him to a monster extension.
(I don’t have many nits to pick on the pitching, itself, though, as Ohtani has really broken out this year on that side of the ball. In trading for Ohtani, the Cubs would be hitting two enormous and difficult boxes to check: they need an ace and they need a big-time impact lefty bat. A guy who should rightly be the MVP any year he’s healthy, since he’s giving you two times the stud in a single roster spot. “(I)t wouldn’t surprise me if Shohei were to be traded to the Cubs, and you look around and this is to me a compelling time to join the Cubs. The bat this year has been closer to “great” than “elite.” The Angels have used him as a DH-only, and you might not be willing to even try him in the outfield because of the pitching value. Heck, if it takes longer than that (it will), then you sign that deal today, knowing that the back-end may be rough if he starts to break down. You don’t “pay” for that in your trade package, mind you, but if you felt an extension was likely, you might be more comfortable with a trade cost that otherwise makes you squirm. I’m sure some of it is my homer-fan desire to see Ohtani on the Cubs, but that all does also strike me as correct. I get that a lot of folks will take issue with that statement, conjuring vague references to limited spending in the last two seasons (ignoring the payroll levels from 2016 through 2020) and a lack of talent at the big league level (ignore the pockets of talent, the importance of depth, and the fact that if you add impact players over multiple years you can, you know, get better). And you look at the division, and Milwaukee is sort of in a perpetual cycle of having to make trades like the one they did with (Josh) Hader. The Cubs also have a lot of capital available – money and prospect – to make additions this offseason. “And I think if Ohtani were to come to Chicago and look around, I feel better about the Cubs’ next five years than I do the Angels’ next five years.
The Angels were reportedly fielding offers on Shohei Ohtani ahead of the trade deadline and the news that they're exploring a sale makes a trade this winter ...
Even if this blockbuster doesn’t happen, it sure feels like all the breadcrumbs are leading to something big for the Cubs this winter. With further development and some other personnel tweaks, the Cubs could be a lot better in a hurry. If Ohtani is indeed made available in a trade, the cost to acquire him is going to be huge in terms of both player capital and financial commitment. Morosi questioned whether the Cubs would do that deal for just one year of Ohtani, but I would counter that there’s no way they make the trade at all unless they can negotiate an extension up front. Ohtani is a different story for me, though, and not just because I actually believe ownership is finally ready to spend again. And that’s where I don’t know if I could do that if I’m the Cubs.” “So it wouldn’t surprise me if Shohei were to be traded to the Cubs, and you look around and this is to me a compelling time to join the Cubs. We’re talking about a uniquely talented player, perhaps the best ever in terms of his excellence on both sides of the ball, who would check two big boxes at once. That’s in addition to parting with a pretty significant chunk of the farm. All hypothetical, mind you, just the sort of stuff where one executive shares with a prominent insider that they might be willing to trade Player X. And I think if Ohtani were to come to Chicago and look around, I feel better about the Cubs’ next five years than I do the Angels’ next five years.” “And that’s why it’s such a hard trade to make.

"Guys are going to have to look at the standings and understand that every game is important," Schneider said. The Blue Jays not only struggled at the plate against the Angels but were sloppy on the field. Stripling played on the 2017 Los Angeles Dodgers, who won a Major League Baseball-leading 104 games and went to the World Series. They had a built-in excuse for the series opener against the Angels because of an overworked bullpen in a pair of extra-inning wins to close out the Red Sox.
Would the Cubs consider trading for Shohei Ohtani this offseason? MLB Insider Jon Morosi "wouldn't be surprised" if it happened.
The Cubs no doubt want a player such as Ohtani. All of a sudden, the Cubs become contenders with that depth on the roster. In this case, when making a trade for the best player in baseball, that becomes a loaded question both literally and figuratively. In fact, if Chicago is such an appealing destination for Ohtani, then all the Cubs need to “give up” is dollars for baseball’s best player. However, Morosi proposed a lot of good points regarding the state of the Cubs. That is quite a statement, given the current state of the team.
