Andy Murray cruises past Francisco Cerúndolo in US Open first round (The Guardian)

The Briton beat the No 24 seed 7-5, 6-3, 6-3 to advance to face John Millman or Emilio Nava in the second round.

He broke serve for the set courtesy of a double fault on set point from Cerúndolo, and then he breezed through the match to record a solid win. Murray first served for the set at 5-3, missing an easy overhead at 15-15 and drawing gasps from the dismayed crowd, then he struck two more errors as he lost his serve. The entire stadium stopped to watch the footage in silence and confirmation of the second bounce prompted widespread boos from the crowd. The summer had started in promising fashion, with Murray skipping the French Open in favour of preparing for the grass season. The early months of Cerúndolo’s breakthrough year included a run to the semi-final on the hard courts of the Miami Masters 1000 event in March. Despite the fact Murray arrived on court with a clear opportunity, it was not a simple task.

In First Round of the US Open, a Ukrainian Player Upset Simona ... (The New York Times)

Daria Snigur, a 20-year-old ranked 124th in the world, burst into tears after beating Halep, a two-time major singles champion.

She has never made it past the third round of a Grand Slam tournament and has never made it past the second round at the U.S. As of Monday, tickets to see Williams play her first — and potentially last — singles match at the U.S. [set to play Danka Kovinic](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/08/25/sports/tennis/us-open-draw-serena-williams.html) in the first round of the tournament Monday, with her match scheduled for 7 p.m. “I can’t think of a moment for her in her career in her life that she settled for less.” She did a quick change in the locker room and emerged into the quiet hallway, where one of her trainers was waiting. Kovinic had taken the first point of the game but then Williams won four in a row. And I almost did do the impossible: A lot of people don’t realize that I was two months pregnant when I won the Australian Open in 2017. Did Kovinic even realize as she sprayed forehands wide and deep and into the net that she’d fallen into a classic Williams trap, abandoning the angles and spins that have won her matches before? Williams made sure to show up for the party, and so did her daughter, Olympia, 4, who wore a matching outfit with her hair in beads reminiscent of a young Serena, and nearly stole the show. She has been a shadow of her former self this summer, during the singles matches that are serving as her coda after nearly a year away from the game she has loved and dedicated her life to. And on a heavy, late-summer New York evening, on the court where she captured her first Grand Slam singles title in 1999, it was enough to topple Kovinic, the sort of player Williams has rolled over in maybe an hour in so many early-round matches in so many other Grand Slams. And then another cannon serve hit her target down the center of the court and Kovinic couldn’t get it back, letting the crowd send up a roar as Williams squatted and pumped her arms.

Open as she prepared for the birth of her daughter, Serena returned to the court later in the year and continued to dominate. The final was the last time Serena appeared in a Grand Slam final. She came into the final Grand Slam tournament of the year as the No. After losing in the ’09 semifinals, missing the tournament in ’10 and falling in the ’11 final, Williams made her way back to the championship by beating one of her now-storied rivals, Victoria Azarenka, in their first Grand Slam final meeting. The younger Williams ended up winning both in a 7–6(6), 7–6(7) victory. Serena Williams sheds cape, finds form and owns U.S. Open stage ... (The Washington Post)

A steamy night in New York was weighted down with a ton of pre-match pomp and circumstance. But the champion pushed through and will play on.

She lost three games in a row to trail by 3-2 in the first set, uptight and short arming the ball. Williams simply hadn’t worked as hard at the game in the past couple of years as she once had, splitting her court time with mothering a 4-year-old daughter, and nurturing venture capital investments. Clearly, at some point in the past few weeks, Williams decided she wanted this match to be more than just a ceremony, and a terrible goodbye. “I have to go sweat in the sun every day when I could be at the pool with some lemonade.” She came out of the Arthur Ashe Stadium tunnel Monday night for the last big occasion of her career in a mock black evening-gown complete with cape and train — but she had on the black shoes of a boxer. “I’m terrible at goodbyes, the world’s worst.” Her tennis was guttural, louder than all of it, and the appreciative roars built from the crowd. “I’m out there to win a match.” “The atmosphere was a lot,” she said later. Williams has always had a special affinity for the Open — not just for the high hard bounces of its acrylic courts, but for everything else that’s hard about it. It was all so much: the ceremonial entrance, the blazing stadium lights and the weighty tributes to the all-time great made her seem prematurely a monument rather than a person. Still, maybe she could find the old inner vibration, the competitive rage that powered her to 23 Grand Slam titles.

US Open: Serena Williams 'staying vague' on retirement plans (INQUIRER.net)

Serena Williams said she is "staying vague" over her expected retirement from tennis after reaching the US Open second round on Monday.

She added: “I think now’s the time. I will still be crazy, I’ll still be intense. A love service game gave the American a 5-3 lead and a final break of the night gave her victory. I love this game. That kind of form prompted her to reveal that she was on the brink of retirement and hinting that this US Open would be her farewell. Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam title winner, said earlier this month that she was “evolving away” from tennis and that “the countdown” was on for her retirement after 27 years as a professional.

Analysis: Can Serena Williams keep going at the US Open? (The Washington Post)

Serena Williams now can say she has won a U.S. Open match in her teens, her 20s, her 30s and her 40s.

“Her opponent has to go up against her — and all of New York City.” “That’s what matters most, is to do things on her own terms.” I don’t know how I’m going to be a part of tennis as of right now. That’s a tough feeling to have, and to leave knowing the more you do it, the more you can shine.” Regardless of what happens in singles, Williams also has doubles to look forward to, with her sister, Venus; they have won 14 Grand Slam titles as a team. Another win will only increase the attention, and ardor, of tennis fans and turn up the volume on talk about whether this could be another turn-back-the-clock U.S. [Williams is not the player she once was](https://apnews.com/article/rafael-nadal-novak-djokovic-naomi-osaka-serena-williams-entertainment-2eda94bfa32dde4a1b0665a0a59e31c8), she got past a patchy start Monday to find her rhythm in the second set. That’s somewhat of a scary prospect for Kontaveit and, if Williams wins again, any future opponents in a section of the draw that doesn’t include anyone with serious U.S. 2 seed in the women’s bracket, Anett Kontaveit, it sure is fun to think about what could be. “I absolutely love being out there,” Williams said following her 6-3, 6-3 victory over 80th-ranked Danka Kovinic on Monday night. And it sure should be fun to watch what happens next. [Serena Williams](https://apnews.com/article/us-open-tennis-championships-serena-williams-sports-new-york-253a845308e234c1cf9fbd0bc13cb40d) now can say she has won a U.S.

Elliott: Rafael Nadal shows he still has fight at the U.S. Open (Los Angeles Times)

Rafael Nadal has been dealing with injuries that could threaten his career, but he earned a first-round victory over Rinky Hijikata at the U.S. Open.

Nadal clinched it on his fifth match point, threading a fierce forehand down the line to secure a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 victory under the closed roof at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
