And that means that every year the State of Israel pays NIS 160 billion on its debt, within which NIS 43 billion is just interest. But we have to also protect our coffers and make sure the national debt decreases. At the end of the day, it’s not just their private issue, because at the end of the day, it affects everyone. It enforces the monopolistic power of that importer and we want to enable everyone to compete. And it’s by opening the market to competition, by reducing regulation. These three things lead to the situation in which the economy is not enough for the community. Thus, there are really big structural failures and to fix them will take a lot of time, a lot of effort, and especially, a lot of political courage. In Kushnir and Yisrael Beytenu’s view, there is no quick fix to the current cost of living crisis. So on one hand, we have limitations on import and export logistics, and on the other, demand constantly increases. In 2009, the beginning of [political rival former prime minister Benjamin] Netanyahu’s leadership, we were closer to OECD countries with respect to prices. Like Liberman, Kushnir is critical of the state’s large ultra-Orthodox population, sitting at 13% but underrepresented in the workforce and in secular studies. The average Israeli worker took home less pay than in 64% of OECD countries in 2021, according to OECD data.

Israel's big secret: Cost, culprit of bad Jerusalem street renovation (The Jerusalem Post)

In the end, the community manager, the residents’ organizations and the municipality realized that it was impossible to proceed, and it was decided to redo all the work – both the sidewalks along Ein Gedi Street and the road itself. The contractor simply did a sloppy and inappropriate job, regardless of the time it took. Such a simple piece of information: Which contractor did the unsuccessful work and which one redid it? [But in Talpiot](https://www.jpost.com/business-and-innovation/energy-and-infrastructure/article-694089), on Ein Gedi Street and along the sidewalks, it was a completely different story. It turns out that Israel’s biggest secret is not what you hear or read in the news but rather the cost of upgrading works on the streets and sidewalks of the capital. [Bethlehem Road](https://www.jpost.com/israel-news/jerusalem-businesses-reopening-face-eager-clientele-and-uncertain-future-661542), the work progressed at a reasonable pace.

"The Palestinian Authority is taking advantage of Israel's weakness and is advancing a strategic plan to establish a Palestinian state."

This means that every day, about seven new illegal buildings are added to the area. The reality in which the enforcement authorities do nothing and the Jewish landowners stand helpless is simply outrageous,” he charged. Between the years 2019-2021, the Arabs built 5,097 new illegal structures, in areas under the full control of the State of Israel. Selective enforcement is reaching a peak we have not seen before.” This is a failure that we cannot accept. “We see before our eyes how day after day, construction criminals taking over huge areas of state land and private land owned by Jews, and only recently we documented another new building and tree plantings.

Satellite images show the strike tore a hole through the runway, as well as igniting a grass fire at the airfield.

The attack tore a hole through the runway and ignited a grass fire at the airfield. Just before the strike, a transponder on an Antonov An-74 cargo plane flown by Iran’s Yas Air, sanctioned since 2012 by the US Treasury over flying weapons on behalf of Tehran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, briefly pinged near Aleppo, according to flight-tracking data. It did not directly acknowledge Wednesday’s strike.

The real history of the U.S.-Israel relationship (The Washington Post)

Walter Russell Mead takes on the pernicious myths that help fuel antisemitism.

of American politics is the gravest threat to the integration of American Jews since the 1940s,” he warns. “The Arc of a Covenant,” drawing from the past to speak to today, merits a wide audience. Mead’s assessment of the complicated entanglement of Jews, Israel and the United States testifies powerfully to the historian Marcus’s admonition about the imperative to understand the past to ensure the future. “Never in American history have so many presidents of so many points of view expended so much effort and political capital on a single objective — and never has so signal a failure in American foreign policy led to so little meaningful reflection and change.” “If the United States had not voted to restrict immigration so drastically, it is probable that the country of Israel would not exist today,” Mead says. In the Middle East, “a naive and deterministic optimism has led Americans to one grave error after another.” We overestimate the chances that negotiations will lead to a lasting peace; when they don’t, we blame the parties for their intransigence rather than recognizing their domestic challenges; we have an unrealistic idea of how much American power can sway leaders of small countries fighting for their survival. But any impact they may have depends on an administration open to those views and the support of American public opinion. “There is a long tradition of Protestant predictions of an ultimate return of the Jews,” Mead writes. He set himself the task of helping Americans understand the “real history of their relationship with the Jewish state,” the importance of Zionism and Israel’s place in American world strategy. This book is filled with similar bold insights: for instance, the impact of the 1924 Johnson-Reed Act, which limited immigration after the great wave that began in 1880 and increased the U.S. As the United States assumed the great-power role formerly held by Britain, Truman was establishing “the Cold War strategy that would guide the United States for the next forty years.” Mead writes, “To blame the Jewish community for policies it dislikes made by presidents it rejects seems, if not virulently antisemitic, at least uninformed.”
