The Vampire Diaries's Kat Graham and Umbrella Academy's Tom Hopper star in a passable, if not particularly sizzling, rom-com set in Verona.
Graham, in particular, imbues Julie with a surprising combo of wholesome midwestern sweetness (she’s from Minnesota) and devilish competitiveness. [Netflix](https://www.theguardian.com/media/netflix) confection Love in the Villa invokes two well-established traditions. But as with any travel love affair, the moderate spell breaks with the intrusion of normality, in the form of their former love interests (Charlie’s is played by Hopper’s real-life wife, Laura). Charlie is pretentious and closed-off – “I’m British, so I don’t do overt displays of emotion, OK?” he says, encouraging Julie to lock her feelings in a box. What you do get is a modestly entertaining escalation of deranged things to do to a near-stranger – releasing cats on someone with a severe allergy, calling the cops, a food fight that doubles as an excuse to name-drop some Italian cheese. True to form, Julie is a hopeless overachieving romantic dialed up to 11 – she dreams of seeing Juliet’s balcony in Verona, she laminates her travel plans and designates 7% of vacation time for “spontaneity”.
But soft, what light from yonder TV breaks? A breezy, pleasing love story about star-crossed travelers that transcends Netflix's romantic recipes.
At one point, pragmatic Charlie points out that the balcony Julie is so enamored with did not in fact inspire the Bard — it was constructed later, in a calculated bid to attract tourists to fair Verona. She even gets to do some fun physical comedy (the restaurant scene where she’s awkwardly trying to suck wine out of a straw is a glorious highlight). [Tom Hopper](https://variety.com/t/tom-hopper/)), who’s in town for business at the annual wine festival, has booked the place for the exact same week. Johnson — who previously delivered another genial rom-com for the streamer (“Love, Guaranteed”) — and his collaborators gift the picture with a bright effervescence, not just in the material’s jovial jests but also in its crafty construction. [Kat Graham](https://variety.com/t/kat-graham/)), who is obsessed with “Romeo and Juliet,” has planned the trip of a lifetime with her boyfriend of four years, Brandon (Raymond Ablack). Between its paper-thin characters, overindulgence in comedic beats and unnecessarily length runtime, Love in the Villa is an Italian rom-com that not even the Verona tourism board would give their stamp of approval. Instead of dedicating most of its runtime to exploring Julie and Charlie’s slow-burn romance and peppering in comedic beats where appropriate, Love in the Villa goes all-in on the comedy, leaving the romance viewers are tuning in for on the back burner. Their latest foray into the world of romantic comedies is Love in the Villa, starring Kat Graham and Tom Hopper as a pair of travelers who accidentally book the same scenic villa in Verona.
A budding feud, a romantic city, an enemies-to-lovers theme. These are classic ingredients for a romantic comedy that audiences love to love and sometimes ...
With all the right tropes and just enough cheesiness that a story like this deserves, Love in the Villa is a fun rom-com capable of entertaining and gifting its viewers with the perfect amount of romance. Love in the Villa may be a silly rom-com at heart, but with In Love in the Villa, much of what viewers will come to know about Julie or experience with her is centered either around her relationship with Brandon or her villa war with Charlie, save a few facts explained through dialogue. Not only will she have to share the villa with the pessimistic British stranger, but Julie will also have to endure a long game of roommate wars. After an abrupt breakup, Julie decides to venture off to the city of love solo, still ready to explore the many items on her itinerary. While it doesn’t break any genre barriers, Love in the Villa has the right amount of levity and romance, even when the story becomes unrealistic.
