Liz Truss shows little sign she is ready to meet big environmental ... (The Guardian)

The new PM has not set out plans for reducing energy waste; instead she has talked of more oil and gas.

“There’s no mandate and no public support to roll back on these commitments. Many green campaigners remember Truss as secretary of state for environment, food and rural affairs from 2014 to 2016. She must also rule out fracking, new coalmines and more North Sea oil and gas extraction.” “None of these can be solved by pandering to those in her party who are advocating environmental deregulation and new gas, oil and coal extraction. The new UK prime minister kicks off her term by meeting the Queen. It's all downhill from there.

The big announcement is penciled in for Thursday, and the public’s response will be the first big test of her government. It is a job fraught with difficulties at the best of times, but will be particularly difficult after such a She told Truss she looked forward to “a constructive relationship, in full respect of our agreements.” Some of those expected to depart have already saved her the trouble, however. How Truss and her new chancellor react will be crucial. Truss will be in charge, and there will be much to do. She will then be led into the Cabinet room, likely with her husband Hugh O’Leary in tow. The first question from officials will be stark. Here, the rhetoric of her summer-long campaign will collide with the harsh reality that awaits. Tuesday’s appointment will be the Queen’s first at her Aberdeenshire residence, where she traditionally spends the late summer and early fall holidaying with her family. He recalled how David Cameron, who became PM in 2010, had simply put his head in his hands in the Cabinet room as the reality of the moment dawned upon him. Instead, tradition dictates Truss will curtsy, and — afterwards — briefly discuss the work that lies ahead.

Oil supply cuts on table as Opec+ meets amid crude sell-off (Financial Times)

“The goldilocks band for Saudi has moved up to around $100 a barrel,” said Raad Alkadiri, a managing director at Eurasia Group. “Abdulaziz has a clear track record of backing words with action,” said Helima Croft, head of global commodity strategy at RBC Capital Markets. The US and other countries responded by releasing oil from emergency stockpiles and called on Saudi Arabia to increase output. “That’s why all options are back on the table.” But the 11 per cent drop in oil prices last week has prompted a clamour from some Opec+ members to reverse policy after months of supply increases. “Opec would prefer to hold policy steady,” said analysts at consultancy Energy Aspects, “but the market may force the producers to announce a cut”.

Meet a traveling wind turbine tech working one of the fastest ... (Business Insider)

Ken details the pros and cons of one of America's fastest-growing jobs: a wind turbine technician. Travel is nice, but his schedule isn't consistent.

Ken, who loves heights, says one exciting part of work is being in the hub of the tower, a "relatively small" space which he says is the nose cone between the blades of the wind turbine. "Working at Costco was a great job," he said. [reported](https://www.businessinsider.com/fast-growing-job-wind-turbine-technician-renewable-energy-no-degree-2021-10), wind turbine service technician is actually one of the most dangerous jobs. Sometimes, he said, technicians will all stay at the same hotel and carpool together. "Because when I'm home, like my mind, my body, my soul is home and wants nothing to do with work," Ken said. Going to work means having to figure out where to stay — and sometimes he doesn't even know how long he will be at a site. The job, according to Ken, isn't for everyone. After two years on the job, he recently received a promotion and raise from $24 to $27 dollars an hour. Given, he sees slow months, he tries to save as much money as he can while working. Ken's duties range from site support to routine maintenance, such as replacing oil filters or measuring torque and tightening structural bolts. He did onboarding training in New Mexico and has since worked on sites in Texas, Wyoming, Illinois, Arkansas, and Oklahoma, as well as Ontario, Canada. After reading an article about how a wind turbine technician job didn't require much schooling, he was intrigued.

Meet Minnesota's Most Vulnerable Progressive (POLITICO Magazine)

Even in a blue state, Keith Ellison is confronting the realities facing Democrats in 2022. Jim Schultz and Keith Ellison shaking hands.

“The key for our campaign is ensuring we do dramatically better in the seven-county metro, and that means flipping a lot of the suburbs and then shrinking the gaps in Minneapolis and St. But for an incumbent, the headlines have been unfavorable, probing “ [the geography of crime in Minnesota](https://minnesotareformer.com/2022/08/16/new-maps-trace-the-geography-of-crime-in-minnesota/),” or “ [skyrocketing violent crime rates](https://www.mprnews.org/episode/2022/08/15/violent-crime-rates-up-in-minnesota)” throughout the state. And in the last general-election test of the Minnesota electorate, in 2020, crime did not prove to be the hobbling force Republicans believed it might be then, despite the unrest following Floyd’s murder that year, and despite Trump’s Nixonian rhetoric. “We’re the state that would elect [former governor and former wrestler] Jesse Ventura.” Following Floyd’s death, he said, it was a “mistake” for activists to ever say “defund the police.” But the intent of the measure, he said, was to “try to get a better relationship” between law enforcement and the community.
