“This study represents an exemplary study of combining social media analytics with survey research to explore more fine-grained Twitter behavioral patterns that are associated with various types of second screeners in a more ecologically valid way,” Jiang said. The authors incorporated survey data with a year’s worth of Twitter activities from the survey respondents, and their paper extends the previous research on second screening as purposive hybrid media practice by examining how fine-grained Twitter behaviors are associated with four types second screeners. The publication is the official journal of the Communication Technology division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

Diving into deep-tissue imaging to help with cancer research (Nature.com)

Leonel Malacrida hopes that his lab's imaging technology will advance cancer diagnosis and research in Uruguay and across Latin America.

We expect to use it mainly in cancer diagnosis and research. I launched the unit in 2019, when I returned here after my postdoc, and Gratton licensed the DIVER technology to us so that we could build this device. For my PhD at the University of the Republic in Montevideo I studied pulmonary surfactant, a biofilm in the lungs that allows people to breathe.

Microplastics are common in homes across 29 countries. New ... (The Conversation AU)

It's impossible to escape exposure to microplastics and a new study confirms they'e in household dust around the world. But the health risks appear ...

This will give us a better understanding of the risks of exposure to these ubiquitous pollutants. However, the question of harm to humans [remains unresolved](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7068600/). Other obvious actions – such as choosing natural fibres for clothing, carpets and furnishings instead of petrochemical-based polymer fibres – can reduce the shedding of microplastics indoors. In high-income countries, polyamide and polyester were the most prevalent microplastic types (11.2% and 9.8% respectively). [microplastics in the blood of humans](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0160412022001258). We can’t escape exposure to these tiny bits of plastic (less than 5mm across) in the environment, which includes the homes where people [spend most of their time](https://www.nature.com/articles/7500165). Synthetic polymer-based materials are used widely in high-income countries in products such as carpets, furniture, clothing and food containers. For the first time we could attribute the health risk across countries according to incomes. [study of global microplastics](https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envpol.2022.119957) exposure inside homes across 29 countries, published today, shows people living in lower-income countries and young children are at greater risk of exposure. Children are at greater risk irrespective of income, which is true for many types of environmental exposures. We examined the prevalence and risk of microplastics according to the gross national income of each country, grouped as low, medium and high-income (such as Australia). Because toxicity data for polymers are limited, the assessment was a minimum estimate of true risk.

Three key tips to help balance research and teaching duties (Times Higher Education (THE))

With ever-greater demands being placed on university faculty, Megumi Terui offers advice on balancing two key parts of the job.

As a final note, what can you do if all of the above seem too difficult to implement or even out of your hands, and you still cannot find a balance between teaching and researching? For example, Canvas allows you to record a video entry as feedback, which I found easier and faster than writing comments – with the additional benefit of building rapport. Explicitly setting aside time for research during the periods we are most fruitful increases our chances of moving forward with a project. Some universities have a specific number of collaborations they request from their professors, so you may have no room for accommodations, but if that is not the case where you are, adjust them to your workload. Some people have a better mental workflow early in the morning, while some of us are night owls. In the past, there was perhaps more of an understanding that, as professors, we could concentrate on either teaching students and maybe doing a couple of research projects on the side or, instead, focus on being a researcher advancing their field while occasionally teaching a group or two.

New Psychological Research Teaches Us How To Create Healthy ... (Forbes)

With a large number of us now spending so much time online, researchers in the field of psychology have turned their focus to understanding what our internet ...

It would benefit us to see the internet for what it really is — a tool to connect and engage with the real human beings sitting behind their screens. Whether you are young or old, the internet is built to keep you learning, engaged, and connected. If you find yourself unable to control your internet use or craving the internet in situations where you are unable to find access to it, Moretta recommends not ignoring it. “Cognitive engagement is about what you do, and how you do it (exploring, learning, wondering, and questioning),” says Schwaba. It is best to seek help from a mental health professional. It can also tell us a lot about ourselves. “People who keep broadening their horizons even in older age tend to be people who live longer and more meaningful lives. Similarities between internet-related problematic behaviors and addictive behaviors, especially in their psycho-physiological mechanisms, have been found. It is transforming our lives in ways we are just beginning to understand. But what happens when the likes and comments don’t come? “It seems that any potential vicious cycle linking problematic internet use and loneliness starts with excessive internet use, which then increases loneliness because of withdrawal from face-to-face interactions,” says Tania Moretta, a psychologist at the University of Padova in Italy. Internet use and loneliness can combine to form a vicious cycle

Is Your Shark Meal Poisoning You? Latest Research Says Yes. (Forbes)

Researchers find that high levels of toxic mercury in some species of shark meat, fins sold for soup pose dangers to human health.

In fact, the meat trade is beginning to surpass the fin trade in volume and value. This is an especially poignant point as most health advisories focused on the risk of mercury toxicity in shark products are treated with a broad brushstroke, listing all shark species. The findings were recently published in [Exposure & Health](https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/fiu.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d13d9ca5483e1889af5c1cd91&id=29c8a577b4&e=e917e7dec5__;!!FjuHKAHQs5udqho!JaSxcFCQI3A2wHVP0Du54M_hV7TJA5qfNAgg2RieWyWiyGaFyOqjtmzx-5mBLYsaekXFz5h7WS8qHW4D7Q$). Seafood has been pointed out to be the source of nearly all the methylmercury that we acquire in our human bodies and presents the greatest risk to fetuses, infants, and children - their growing brains and nervous systems can be adversely affected by this toxin. Hammerhead species had the most staggeringly high amounts of mercury. Expectant mothers and parents of young children know to limit certain seafood intake to avoid these high levels of mercury, staying away from any seafood with the ominous warning: “High in Mercury.” But is mercury that bad for us? Typically, shark fin soup is reserved for special occasions, so people only have anywhere between one to six bowls a year. Marine life absorbsmethylmercury — the organic form of mercury — from their food and from their surrounding environment as water passes over their gills. As methylmercury is absorbed by bigger animals — which tend to live longer and eat more things — larger fish species tend to accumulate a lot more methylmercury in their body than smaller fish. The Dallas Morning News retains full editorial control of the Education Lab’s journalism. A university investing in innovative research, such as the work Dhar is doing, has a big impact on the future of medicine and businesses while also attracting faculty and students to the area, school officials say. Preston Smith signed a bill that integrated the campus into the University of Texas System and changed its name to UTD. This semester, UTD merged two schools to form one larger School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology. The founders of Texas Instruments established the school’s foundation when they opened the Graduate Research Center of the Southwest in 1961. Such investments help UTD associate professor Nikki Delk pursue research and place students in her lab to learn through hands-on experimentation. Gregory Gordon, managing director of SSRN and Knowledge Lifecycle, shares his thoughts on preprints and the benefits of early-stage research.

A preprint option gives authors the ability to quickly get their work-in-progress in front of the community in advance of the official version-of-record that has been fully vetted and peer reviewed. During the pandemic we bought a lake house and I became a handyman, a renovation guy of sorts. During the pandemic, we saw a significant increase in early-stage research being written and shared across all disciplines – COVID-19 was roughly one third of the increase we saw posted to SSRN, and this upward trend has continued in 2022. The ability to get a ‘first look’ at preprint content in the midst of the knowledge lifecycle – as it is moving from idea to working paper, to submission, and then finally to version-of-record – is incredibly exciting as new ideas can be shared earlier and better research can be produced faster. My biggest hope for the future is that we continue to build out the knowledge lifecycle with a focus on the end-to-end process. This ease of sharing eliminates the duplication of submission efforts on the researcher’s part and encourages the rapid dissemination of research. This cross-pollination of perspectives is one of the biggest and most interesting developments in scholarly publishing, and we at SSRN believe that sharing diverse disciplinary perspectives helps create new, innovative research, faster. Nearly 1 million researchers and students across the world regularly use SSRN in this way, sharing to a community of 2.5 million unique visitors a month. The first is the evolution of sharing early-stage research and preprints by virtually all journals and publishers. In addition, I am the managing director of Knowledge Lifecycle Management, which allows me to look across Elsevier for opportunities to integrate early-stage research. We define this as an author's own write-up of research results and analysis that has not been peer reviewed, and it does not include any of the benefits of the publication process (such as formatting, copy-editing, technical enhancements, etc.). This promotes discussion, collaboration and the exchange of ideas, which in turn helps to produce better research, more quickly.
