Both men have been to quarter-finals before at Grand Slams but neither has made it through, so something has to give this time. The winner will be breaking uncharted territory – neither has been to a semi-final of a slam before – but it’s a match-up we’re likely to see many more times over the next few years. Having said all that, both men are chasing history, so it’s not like there’s nothing extra to play for.
Carlos Alcaraz is the betting favorite to win the men's US Open. But first he needs to get past Jannik Sinner. See the odds, picks and prediction today.
Instead, there seems to be some value zagging while everyone else is zigging and backing the Spaniard to make quick work of his rival. The appeal of getting Sinner at +158 won’t be lost on plenty of people. 93 Daniel Altmaier in Round 1, dropped the opening set to Brandon Nakashima in Round 3 and then had all sorts of trouble with the hard-hitting-but-one-dimensional Ilya Ivashka in his last match. Both players are coming off five-set thrillers last round, but Alcaraz has looked the more impressive player on the hard courts in Queens. AZ, CO, IA, IL, IN, LA, MI, NJ, NY, PA, TN, VA, WV, WY only. Coming into the US Open, there appeared to be two players a head above the rest: Daniil Medvedev and Rafael Nadal. Both are now out.
There are a lot of powerful players out there, and even a lot of speedy ones, and everyone is used to dealing with that kind of skillset. All bets are off if Alcaraz goes down; such is the strangeness of the 2022 US Open that he faces his toughest challenge to get there. And finally, he has some of the best hands in the world once he’s gotten there, and is at no disadvantage in the short game. Secondly, he has the quickness to get to the net in order to pick up the drop shot. I have a slight concern of whether Sinner’s elbow- and wrist-dominated forehand can keep from breaking down over long periods of assault from Alcaraz’s shoulder-heavy forehand (such as in a five-setter), and it may have been that very difficulty that forced Sinner to take five sets to remove Ilya Ivashka in Round 4 (the big Belorussian with a similarly-produced forehand to Alcaraz). And speaking of putting away balls at the net, Sinner is primed to neutralize Alcaraz’s favorite tactic. Even more to the point is the quality of the rivalry, and how it has already developed strangely. Both have leveled out at the moment, or more precisely have continued to grow but at a slower pace, but each still with the possibility of rising even higher. That is the first hurdle for Alcaraz, then, in the current match, having to beat the Italian on a surface that should favor the latter. Coming into the US Open, there appeared to be two players a head above the rest of the draw in Daniil Medvedev and Rafael Nadal. “I didn't think we were going to have that in this generation. “And for me, I think that would be one of the best stories if it were to happen.” “It would just be the right time to have a young player light it up, who isn't a flash in the pan, we know their quality, we know they're close (to something big). “But what Alcaraz and Sinner are producing in their practices is an indication of what we're going to see, which is the same quality of tennis. “I thought we would struggle to see the quality of tennis in back-ends of tournaments, like (what we saw with) the Nadal-Federer matches, the Djokovic-Federer matches and all of those incredible finals we've seen. The Spaniard and the Italian will battle for a place in the US Open semifinals, which would mark a career-best Grand Slam result for the winner.

Then even if I won a tournament, it would be 100, it has to be 1000. You know, I have to keep going and keep trying. He’s the favorite to win the title now. Like his on-court idol, Rafa Nadal, Alcaraz plays with poise and body language that gives no hint as to whether he’s winning or losing. And as we move from intuition to data, terms like “It Factor” and “heart of a champion” almost seem anachronistic. A few months before that, at the ATP’s “Next Gen” year-end event, he made it clear he was the brightest tennis star in ascent, turning that week into a personal showcase, winning 15 of 16 sets against his young peers.

Sinner was up early in that one but Alcaraz stunningly battled back to take the lead. The second set was quite a crucial one as Sinner took an early break and held it for a long time before dropping it when he served for the set.
