Champions League takeaways: Mbappe shines as PSG hold on vs ... (CBSSports.com)

Manchester City, Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Benfica were also winners on the day, while Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donestk are certainly the story of night ...

The Black and Yellow are in cruise control with 63 percent of possession so far. Christian Pulisic has entered for Raheem Sterling who didn't even take a shot during his time on the field. Marco Reus, Raphael Guerreiro, and Jude Bellingham all found the back of the net as Chelsea likely could've scored more goals in a dominating performance. Mislav Orsic scored in the 13th minute and Dinamo held on as Chelsea dominated possession but couldn't make it count for the rest of the match. It's a blunder by Gulacsi as his poor touch hands the ball to Marian Shved, and he finishes into the open goal from a good 35 yards out! A movement on the ball that would make Roberto Carlos smile. The Ukrainian side have taken a 3-1 lead at RB Leipzig, and there are just 10 minutes to go. Dinamo Zagreb: Defended Chelsea very well and scored a brilliant goal on the counter. It had so much movement on it even Roberto Carlos would be like, "wow." Just two weeks after the Ukrainian league finally returned for the first time since the start of Russia's invasion, Shakhtar Donestk pulled off an incredible 4-1 win at RB Leipzig on what was a historic night. He scored twice at Sevilla on Tuesday in an easy 4-0 victory, and he's continuing to show why he is the most prolific striker in Europe at the moment. Eden Hazard came on to replace Benzema and ended up scoring his first Champions League goal for the club.

Dinamo Zagreb v Chelsea: Champions League – live! (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: Chelsea begin their campaign in Croatia, and John Brewin has the latest updates.

[Chelsea](https://www.theguardian.com/football/chelsea) go to sleep and Orsic runs from his own half after Chelsea lose the ball on the edge of the Dinamo box. [Chelsea](https://www.theguardian.com/football/chelsea) step it up, and Dinamo step back. [Chelsea](https://www.theguardian.com/football/chelsea) ragged, and then forces a corner, celebrating with a punch of the air. [Chelsea](https://www.theguardian.com/football/chelsea) were so dominant and yet the first time Dinamo run at them they fold like a packet of sandwiches. The movement is there, the instinct is lacking. Petkovic’s ball is a beauty and Orsic speeds past Fofana, and as Kepa approaches, dabs the ball beyond the goalie. and Tuchel is raging on the bench, even more so when he watched the replay on an iPad. Dinamo are really digging in and the referee, István Kovács, from Romania. 34 min: Chilwell attempts to go on the overlap and then runs into the path of Moharrami. A glimpse of action as Sterling loops the ball over, and Aubameyang is not exactly at the races. 45+1 min: A swing and a miss from Aubameyang, the ball having been directed beyond him by Sterling. The ideas are there, the execution is not.

The club gradually became something of a parody, a status exacerbated by the petulance of its stars and club hierarchy. It’s a sign that he wants to prioritize the collective over the individual stars. What transpired was another painful and predictable exit in the Champions League, notably at the hands of Real Madrid, a club PSG is so desperate to emulate. This is no longer the Juventus that is associated with upstaging other major clubs through grit, determination and class. It’s telling that PSG is the overwhelming favorite to win tonight. That shift in the balance of power is also reflected on the pitch.

Follow the latest from the Champions League as Dinamo Zagreb host Chelsea in Group E.

75 mins to KO: Chelsea have been drawn in a group alongside AC Milan and Red Bull Salzburg, and Dinamo Zagreb of course. 30 mins to KO: Chelsea made a number of big signings over the summer. Orsic was released in behind the Chelsea defence, Fofana didn't have the pace to get back and make the tackle and the youngster prods the finish past Kepa and over the line! Dinamo Zagreb have taken the lead against the run of play! Sterling played the ball in behind for Havertz who had the pace advantage on his opponent. Orsic deserves a lot of credit for taking the opportunity. The away team have the ball in the back of the net, but it's been chalked off for offside. The ball was played to Ademi 20 yards out and he unleashed a ferocious strike with a lot of power! 19 mins: A period of sustained pressure from Chelsea as they search for an equaliser. Chelsea have started the second half at a higher tempo and Havertz does brilliantly to beat his man down the right side and whip a dangerous ball into the box. 38 mins: Nothing is working for Chelsea at the moment. They are giving away possession cheaply in the middle of the pitch - this time it's Kovacic who concedes the ball.

For all the money fire-hosed at PSG – for all the talk that this season it would finally bear fruit – they crumbled in the face of a historic club with decades-long pedigree, as Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema scored a second leg hat trick to tear down PSG’s lead and send them crashing out of the tournament. It was a 6-1 beating that seemed to expose the Parisians as amateurish parvenus with no place at football’s top table. It looked like PSG had joined the ranks of the giants. The [Champions League](https://www.france24.com/en/tag/champions-league/) is the theatre of PSG’s most passionate hopes for glory, and over recent years the tournament’s knockout rounds have provided stages for the tragic denouement of those hopes. So will the Parisians finally shake off their reputations as also-rans in club football’s top tournament?

Americans in UEFA Champions League 2022/23: USMNT players in ... (Sporting News)

USMNT starters Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie headline a group of 10 Americans who could play big roles for their club over the six games of the UEFA ...

National Team setup at one point or another, there is one player with American eligibility who has not made his way into the USMNT fold. Under new management this season with Carl Hoefkens in charge, he's been given a chance, starting their Belgian Super Cup win and seeing a start in one of the first seven league fixtures. A Wolves youth product born in New York City, he joined Belgian side Club Brugge last summer. The 32-year-old hasn't appeared for the national team since 2016, and his club minutes have dropped sharply in the last two-plus seasons as well. Tillman, born in Germany with American citizenship, committed to the USMNT this past summer and made his international debut, proving a raw but bright attacking talent. Dest, who can showcase his attacking skills at right wing, will be competing for playing time against 25-year-old Italian starter Davide Calabria. He was immediately on the bench for the Milan derby on Sept. It should make for the ideal preparation ahead of the World Cup. Without McKennie, Juventus crashed out of the Champions League in the second leg after an embarrassing 3-0 home loss. The 23-year-old is also a key figure in the Juventus midfield, especially with new arrival Paul Pogba sidelined for significant time due to a knee injury. Pulisic also scored in both legs of their Round of 16 matchup against LOSC Lille last campaign, helping Chelsea to a 4-1 aggregate victory. The American has made 21 appearances in UEFA's top competition for Chelsea, scoring five goals and assisting five others.

Champions League: Zagreb stun 2021 UCL Champions Chelsea (Premium Times)

Chelsea have failed to win in three consecutive away games under Tuchel for the first time since December 2020.

Good journalism costs a lot of money. Despite the change in attackers with the duo of Armando Broja for Aubameyang in the 59th minute and Christian Pulisic for Sterling 16 minutes later, Chelsea still failed to break the determined Zagreb defense. The Chelsea forward quickly introduced himself in the 47th minute with a shot from outside the box, but it was tame and easily collected by the goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic. Ademi put Kepa to test in the 30th minute but the Chelsea goalkeeper pushed the ball onto the post to keep the Blues in the game. It was the first match in which the semi-automatic robot was deployed and the first player it caught was Ben Chilwell in the 13th minute. Mislav Orsic became the man of the moment, as he scored in the 13th minute for the Croatian club side.

PSG vs. Juventus result: Kylian Mbappe brace enough to stave off ... (Sporting News AU)

Kylian Mbappe's first-half double was enough to keep PSG barely afloat to earn all three points over a Juventus side that made a strong late push.

There's not enough consistency from Juventus to present PSG a challenge at this stage in the season. Verratti and Hakimi are involved, with the latter playing a one-two with Mbappe as the Frenchman enters the penalty area. He shows both Bremer and Ramos a yellow card to up the stakes on the rest of the match. The official has lots of work to do to put a lid on things. A deflection in the Juventus penalty area falls to Neymar at the top of the six-yard box, and the Brazilian unleashes a blistering volley. Dusan Vlahovic whips a header in at a great angle, but Donnarumma is there diving down to his right to get a hand on the shot. The Frenchman produces a rare whiff in front of net. 36th min: Neymar somehow gets free through the Juventus back line off a brilliant bit of skill and a fortuitous deflection, and he goes down under contact from Juan Cuadrado as the ball rolls to Perin. The new summer arrival whiffs as he tries to clear a cross, and that allows Kostic to feed Locatelli arriving in the six-yard box. 65th min: Marco Verratti, who's had an absolutely incredible match, earns a yellow card for a push in the back of Rabiot. This influence is a very positive sign for McKennie as he looks to win minutes in a crowded Juventus midfield, even in the absence of Paul Pogba. Both had chances after the break, but neither produced the same cutting edge they showed in the first half and throughout the start of the season.

The Blues have no time to dwell with a big West London derby on the horizon this weekend in the Premier League.

Some have recognised the fact that Tuchel himself isn't as present as he used to be on the sidelines. We had a number of deliveries, spaces, and ball wins that should be by far enough to have far more attempts, but we did not. A lovely bit of interchange in the middle of the pitch allowed the midfielder to race through on goal and dink his effort past the onrushing Kepa Arrizabalaga. ](https://www.football.london/chelsea-fc/news/every-word-thomas-tuchel-chelsea-24948515)"We expected what we got, and I think we got what we got. It was the story of the last few games - we started okay for 15-20 minutes but then lacked determination, precision and maybe even lacked the smell of blood. Mislav Orsic, as he loves to do, continued his premium goalscoring streak against London clubs, having previously netted on multiple occasions in the past against Tottenham and West Ham, respectively.

This year, the club has 1,055 games of experience to draw on, ahead of PSG on 986 – still desperately chasing a maiden victory despite spending huge amounts over the last decade – Liverpool on 880, Barcelona on 867, and Atletico Madrid on 837. The only exception to be found by the firm was Barcelona, last season, when the club’s financial crisis saw it unable to adapt to life after Messi – slumping to a third-place finish in its group despite having a combined 1,098 matches under its belt. The English top flight was the only league globally to eclipse €1 billion in gross spend in the summer transfer window – with expensive arrivals like Erling Haaland and Darwin Núñez seeing gross expenditure hit €2.25 billion.

Just like at Celtic Park at the weekend a two-goal deficit quickly became three for Rangers when Kudus's storming run found the finish to match as he smashed in off the far post. Edson Alvarez, Steven Berghuis, Mohammed Kudus and Steven Bergwijn were on target for the Dutch champions as they shrugged off the loss of a number of key players in the transfer window. Rangers outclassed by Ajax on chastening Champions League return (The Guardian)

Goals from Edson Álvarez, Steven Berghuis, Mohammed Kudus and Steven Bergwijn gave Ajax an emphatic 4-0 win over a dismal Rangers in Amsterdam.

Rangers lack of defiance pointed to Van Bronckhorst, strangely, being unable to rouse his troops despite this being a glamour occasion against one of the continent’s A-list names. Kudus passed to Berghuis and his effort beat McLaughlin via a ricochet off Sands – a midfielder asked to fill in at centre-back. The Ajax team were as vibrant as Johan Cruyff Arena had been when transformed into the flag-waving cauldron that greeted Rangers’ ending of a 12-year absence from this stage of the competition. If there was a number to rate the invention of their opponents then zero would not have been unfair on Rangers, whose manager, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, seemed to have instructed them to sit as far back as possible and hope that they could somehow conjure a goal. Had Van Bronckhorst given his charges a roasting at the interval? Napoli overwhelms Liverpool in 4-1 Champions League win (The Washington Post)

Liverpool has a long way to go to regain the form that took it to the final of last season's Champions League.

Klopp was sent off during a loss while coaching Borussia Dortmund in 2013, then was at the helm for Liverpool defeats in 2018 and 2019. “It was almost the perfect match,” Zielinski said. Liverpool has started the Premier League season with just two wins from six games. Kvaratskhelia dribbled by two players on the left flank before setting up Simeone perfectly. Liverpool crushed by rampant Napoli in Champions League opener (The Independent)

Napoli 4-1 Liverpool: The Reds' early-season struggles continued in Naples with a comprehensive defeat in their opening game of the Champions League group ...

Gomez was culpable then and again for the third. It was Liverpool’s first goal away at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium but the context meant it was scarcely cause for celebration. There was a shot that hit the woodwork, a missed penalty and a goal-line clearance. It is a hat-trick of defeats in Naples in the Klopp era, but this was the heaviest and the most harrowing. Ahead of each, Victor Osimhen’s involvement only spanned 40 minutes, included a missed penalty and what could harshly be described as a failure to find an unguarded net, but he was electric. Nevertheless, Liverpool were outmanoeuvred and opened up again when Zambo Anguissa exchanged passes with Zielinski and strolled through to score his first goal for Napoli. Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa is much more than a player who failed at Fulham and brought the flair and the deftness to suggest he belongs on such a stage. Piotr Zielinski scored twice and seemed ubiquitous; he is a former Liverpool target and how their midfield could have benefited from a creator of his calibre. Napoli’s excellence meant they had scant reason to rue the reprieves they granted Liverpool. There were individual errors and a lack of cohesion among the collective. There were a collection of errors, with a shambolic defence found glaringly wanting while the lack of a functioning midfield compounded their problems. If Barcelona ranks as Liverpool’s finest and famous European game under Jurgen Klopp, this was surely the worst and the most worrying.

Napoli Takes Liverpool's Rocky Start to New Depths (Sports Illustrated)

After Chelsea's defeat against Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday, there came another chastening result for a Premier League side on Wednesday as Liverpool was ...

Kvaratskhelia, once again, was the source, robbing Gomez and cutting the ball back for André-Frank Zambo Anguissa, who played a one-two with Zieliński before finishing neatly as Gomez failed to track his run. It was his foul on Aleksandar Mitrović that gave Fulham a penalty in the opening game of the season, and his clumsy challenge on Victor Osimhen that led to a second Napoli penalty 12 minutes after the first. Gomez kept getting caught in possession, one of which led to Osinhen squaring for Kvaratskhelia, whose effort was cleared off the line by van Dijk. Perhaps it is the consequence of injuries and a hangover from last season, when it came so close to a quadruple, costing it a little of the sharpness so necessary to the hard-pressing style of play favored by Jürgen Klopp. Far more worrying in the longer term is the form of van Dijk. It was his dart in from the left and square pass to Matteo Politano that led to the opening goal after five minutes as Milner, crouching with his arm weirdly extended, deflected the ball wide with his hand.

Humiliation for Liverpool as vibrant Napoli rip them to shreds (The Guardian)

Liverpool were thrashed 4-1 in Italy by Napoli, with their Champions League campaign got off to the worst possible start.

Luis Díaz reduced the deficit in style when he cut in from the left and beat Meret with a fine finish into the far corner. The Georgian centred low for Diego Simeone’s son to convert a simple tap-in. The visitors controlled the closing stages but had been comprehensively beaten in the sweltering Italian heat, outclassed and humiliated by a team that wanted victory more. As bad as Klopp’s team were, and their problems were not confined to defence with Mohamed Salah struggling to control the most routine of passes, they created enough openings to have doused Napoli’s mood. It was deflected via the outstretched hand of James Milner, Liverpool’s captain for the night, and Zielinski sent Alisson the wrong way from the resulting, clear penalty. Zambo Anguissa exchanged passes with Zielinski and strolled into the area without meeting a challenge before beating Alisson with a cool finish. And a rare, necessary apology from Klopp to the travelling fans afterwards. Osimhen dispossessed the dawdling Joe Gomez to advance into the penalty area where Kvaratskhelia stood unmarked. Play had continued after the striker’s attempt to turn inside the Liverpool defender but, on his pitch-side monitor, the referee spotted contact between Van Dijk and Osimhen’s right foot. Napoli had revealed their hand to play quick, incisive passes behind the Liverpool defence. The hosts sliced through at will in the first half especially. The Liverpool manager’s instructions were abandoned after 42 seconds.

Marseille, winner of the first Champions League title in 1993, have now lost its last eight away games in the competition dating back a decade and 14 of 15 games overall in that time. Eintracht won the Europa League title in May but the German club and the team it beat in the final, Rangers, both found it tough Wednesday on returning to the top-tier competition after long absences.
