The Sun, meanwhile, have been to the playoffs in six consecutive seasons; they have also been to four consecutive semifinals and are likewise in the Finals for the second time in this run. The Aces are 0-2 all time in the Finals, while the Sun are 0-3. For the Aces, this is their fourth consecutive playoff appearance; they have been to at least the semifinals on all four occasions and are making their second Finals appearance in this stretch. The Aces were swept by the Seattle Storm in the 2020 Finals, while the Sun lost to the Washington Mystics in five games in the 2019 Finals. This has been a somewhat strange and frustrating season for Jones, who was notably benched late in the fourth quarter of the Sun's Game 3 loss to the Sky in the semifinals. They had the second-best defensive rating in the league (96.3), the best offensive rebounding rate (37.1) of any team since the 2015 Atlanta Dream and scored 46.2 percent of their points in the paint. She boasts a 75.8 true shooting percentage, which is on pace to be the best ever for a playoff run in either the WNBA or Earlier this week, Wilson was named MVP for the second time in her career, and in the process became the fifth player in league history to win both that award and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season. She's averaging 24 points, 4.3 rebounds and 7.7 assists; entering the Finals she is second in scoring and first in assists for the playoffs. She's averaging 20.5 points, 10.8 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game in the playoffs, and in the semifinals made history as the first player to have consecutive 30-point, 10-rebound games in the postseason. Despite losing Game 1 of that series, they bounced back to win three straight and take the series in thrilling fashion. A'ja Wilson and Chelsea Gray were phenomenal in what will go down as one of the best playoff series in league history.

WNBA Finals Preview: Everything to Know for Sun vs. Aces (Sports Illustrated)

It's Jonquel Jones vs. A'Ja Wilson. Connecticut vs. Las Vegas. And it's two teams searching for their first WNBA titles.

While Connecticut’s frontcourt has the potential to wreak havoc on Las Vegas, and slow down the series’s style of play, the Aces’ star guards have both experienced past success against the Sun and are playing some of their best basketball of the season. And while her return has been a boost to the Sun, Jones has seen her minutes decrease this season. In Game 3, she scored only six points on 3-of-10 shooting from the field, and was benched for more than two minutes late in the contest, with her team down only two points. 2 unit in the regular season, allowing only 96.3 points per 100 possessions, and in the second half of games it proved to be the league’s top defensive unit. The Aces went 2–1 against the Sun in the regular season, though Miller did not coach in the first game due to COVID-19 protocol and Jonquel Jones did not play in the third meeting for the same reason. Unlike Las Vegas, Connecticut needed three games to advance out of the first round, having to win a deciding affair in Dallas to move past the Wings. One of the effects of her absence was the further strain it put on the team’s starting lineup. The Sun’s strength lies with their size and frontcourt play (more on that later), so if Las Vegas’s three-headed backcourt is able to control the series’s pace and style of play, it should bode well for its title hopes. Olympian, has been especially prolific, averaging 24 points and 7.7 rebounds per game in the playoffs, on 62.6% shooting from the field and 59.5% from three. Center Kiah Stokes had moved into the first five with Hamby out, leaving guard Riquna Williams as the lone member of the Aces bench to average more than 10 minutes of action per contest in the playoffs. A postseason full of thrilling contests is nearing its conclusion with the 2022 WNBA Finals set to begin on Sunday afternoon. The Aces were the league’s No.

“And I love the aggressive mind-set and her confidence because she’s put in the work, but she’s also understood the passing aspect of the game at a higher level and seeing things develop. Wilson was named MVP and defensive player of the year. The Aces and Sky, and their battle for the No. Gray might be the best point guard in the league, and she knows what it takes to be part of the last team standing. Gray has upped her play even more in the playoffs, where she is averaging 24.0 points, 7.7 assists and 4.3 rebounds and flashed spectacular moments in Games 3 and 4 to close out the Storm. She won her first league MVP in 2020 and then averaged 19.5 points, 9.4 rebounds and 1.9 blocks this season en route to being named MVP and defensive player of the year. Jones was named second team all-defense this season, Most Improved Player in 2017 and Sixth Woman of the Year in 2018. The organization was also the runner-up in 2004 and 2005. The 2022 WNBA Finals Are Here, Seemingly Queerer Than Ever! (Autostraddle)

Plus, why is every Connecticut basketball coach so obsessed with Candace Parker? (And not in a fun way, like us.)

I actually still can’t believe it, and I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. I think she wanted to come in and coach the most talented team in the league and win the championship as fast as possible to send a message. I just want people to invest in the W the way they deserve! Natalie: I don’t know that I agree about the Bill Laimbeer thing — he’s a MNBA legend in his own right — but do I think the average sports dude knows that he coached in the WNBA? Obviously I want to support her wherever she goes and whatever she does; it’s her life and her dreams — but I also do think it complicates the conversation. And I think she’ll head back to the MNBA as soon as someone offers her a head coaching job. I think she wants to go back to the MNBA. It was just a complete collapse…and I suppose that was the thing that was most surprising for me. Usually I love to support a member of the alphabet mafia but Curt Miller? On the one hand, I am so excited for Jonquel Jones and the gayest team in the league. Broadly, I can’t believe it because I thought for SURE they were headed back to the finals. Heather and Natalie got together to talk about the series, and to share their disbelief that the Chicago Sky didn’t make it back to the Finals.

On most nights, she’s the best player on the court. She’s as good as it gets on defense and turns her greatness on that end into transition opportunities, where she is a nightmare for the opposition. A year later, the Aces and Sun have redeemed themselves. In 2021, the Las Vegas Aces and Connecticut Sun were the two best teams in the WNBA throughout the regular season — very clearly, the two best.

WNBA Finals: Anonymous coaches' scouting report on Aces-Sun (Just Women's Sports)

With anonymous insight from two current WNBA coaches, we break down the 2022 Finals matchup between the Las Vegas Aces and Connecticut Sun.

They are smart, they understand the game, and they are teachers of the game. They are fully and totally prepared, and that is why they are in the championship game. They have a swagger and a confidence to them that goes unphased a lot of the time. Who can hold true to what’s gotten them there and challenge their players to do it better without abandoning it in the heat of the moment? A lot of their drives and penetration come from the middle of the floor, so keep them pinned to the sideline. Becky won’t have to in the moment. The MVP is being directed to the conductor. So, Vegas is going to have to rebound the basketball. Try and get Wilson to fall in love with the face-up perimeter game and get Plum antsy. Nobody has been able to crack that code, but you have to contain the three-headed monster. It results in easy points and will force them to have to get into their bench. But Connecticut a lot of times has played behind her, and there’s no way I’d let her square up her shoulders to the ball, especially on the left block.

WNBA Finals 2022 Preview: (1) Las Vegas Aces vs. (3) Connecticut ... (PortlandFire.com)

The top-seeded Las Vegas Aces and third-seeded Connecticut Sun tip off their best-of-five series on Sunday afternoon on ABC.

Both the Sun and Aces have been knocking on the championship door for the past few four years – making the Semi-Finals each year and each team advancing to the Finals once but leaving with a championship. With Wilson and Gray currently playing at historic levels, it is tough to see the Aces losing three times in five games. The Aces will want this to be a track meet – a high-paced game with plenty of possessions, fast breaks, 3-pointers, and finishes at the basket. The Aces are not only looking for their first WNBA title, and they are looking for their first win in the WNBA Finals as they enter this series with an 0-6 record on the league’s grandest stage. Wilson is coming off a matchup with one-time league MVP and two-time Finals MVP Breanna Stewart in the Semi-Finals, where Wilson played all but four minutes of the entire series. In 2020, it was the Aces that knocked the Sun out in the Semi-Finals in another tightly-contested five-game series. After sweeping the Los Angeles Sparks, the Sun made it back to the Finals for the first time in 14 years but lost a tough five-game series to Washington. The Sun and Aces are two of the three active franchises in the WNBA that has relocated during its history. The Sun outscored the Sky 24-5 in the fourth quarter of Game 5, closing the game on a record 18-0 run to advance to the Finals for the second time in four years. That will increase to 11 this year as Connecticut and Las Vegas search for the first championship in their franchise’s history. Las Vegas had the top three scorers in the season series: Plum (21.0 ppg), Young (19.7), and Wilson (19.0). The Aces entered the postseason as the top seed in the tournament thanks to their 26-10 record and tiebreaker over the defending champion Sky.

After two thrilling semifinal series, the WNBA Finals are set as the Las Vegas Aces will face the Connecticut Sun.

Since 2005, the WNBA Finals have had a best-of-five format. This postseason, Thomas continues to do it all with averages of 11.0 points, 9.4 rebounds and 5.5 assists. As Wilson's trophy case quickly fills up, she looks to complete the trifecta of her season with her first-ever WNBA title. ESPN Las Vegas' 26-10 record was good for first in the WNBA this season, and it clinched its spot in the Finals with a four-game series victory over the Seattle Storm. Throughout the postseason, Connecticut has been able to earn gritty wins by muddying things up with its defense, but it now faces its toughest task to date. Thomas is the biggest threat to impact all facets of the game in the Finals. Bonner is, in many ways, the heart and soul of this Sun team, and her fire sparked Connecticut's late rally in the decisive Game 5 win over Chicago to clinch a spot in the Finals. As Connecticut spreads the wealth on the offensive end, Jones is averaging a team-high 14.4 points in the postseason while shooting 47.8 percent from the field and 36.8 percent from 3-point range. It's hard to debate that Wilson, who was named Defensive Player of the Year and MVP of the 2022 WNBA season, isn't the best player in the league. The Aces and Sun met three times during the 2022 regular season, with the Aces taking two of the three games. Connecticut, which earned the third seed in the playoffs with a 25-11 record, had to fight to get to the Finals, defeating the Dallas Wings in a decisive Game 3 on the road in the first round and eliminating the defending champion Chicago Sky in a decisive Game 5 on the road in the semifinals.

Despite many indicators that say the Sun are very capable of winning the series, Vegas has the reigning MVP in Wilson along with Chelsea Gray, who’s on one of the hottest stretches in WNBA history. Both the Aces and the Sun are in search of their first title and with history between the two teams, who faced off during the 2020 bubble playoffs, this has the makings for a modern classic. The Aces also have Chelsea Gray, who is absolutely laying waste to any defense she’s seen in these playoffs— [averaging](https://stats.wnba.com/players/traditional/?sort=PTS&dir=-1) 24 points per game on a blistering 62.6 percent from the field and 59.5 (!!!) percent from three. Hammon has been a breath of fresh air for the Aces—both in the locker room and in opening up the offense—and has her team on the cusp of a championship in her first year as head coach. The Sun are arguably the more complete team up and down the roster while the Aces are very much reliant on their stars shouldering much of the burden on both sides of the ball. It seems that nothing short of divine intervention is going to slow her down, and when you add all of those pieces to Connecticut’s history of choking in the playoffs, I’m going Aces in five, with Chelsea Gray as Finals MVP. Although Vegas made the finals just two years ago, they are a much different team from that 2020 run. Interior defense will be of the utmost importance against Vegas, and while it’s hard to completely stop Aces’ superstar A’ja Wilson, the Sun have the personnel to perhaps slow her down. They hit a rough patch before the All-Star Break, but they came back blazing after that stretch, and their performance in the playoffs so far has been spectacular. Chelsea Gray has been the definition of clutch from the beginning of the postseason, doing things that have literally never been done The Aces were the most consistent team in the semifinals, eliminating the Storm in just four games despite the Storm’s All-Star power in Sue Bird and Breanna Stewart. After defeating the Dallas Wings by over a 20-point margin in Game 1, it was a surprise to see the Connecticut Sun lose by 10 in Game 2.
