Offseason moves should help Cavs maximize Kevin Love once again (King James Gospel)

Offseason moves by the Cavs should help them maximize Kevin Love's play again in 2022-23, in following up his performance from last season.

He seemed to have nice chemistry with shooters for stretches when given opportunities to playmake with the Wiz, and with him being capable of hitting rolling bigs, that could help in opening up Love on the perimeter playing off that via skips. Cleveland’s offseason signing of Ricky Rubio was one that clearly jumped out, for one, given how Rubio seemingly had a profound impact on the team last year, following his trade acquisition in the prior offseason from the Minnesota Timberwolves. His connection with Love, dating back to their Minnesota days, was one that gave Cleveland’s bench added punch, and I’d think when Rubio is back, we should see that once again for stretches. Given how recent seasons prior to that went, and with injury concerns, him having those splits in 22.5 minutes per contest was rock solid, in my opinion, and he gave the Cavs a spark regularly in his newer role. Fortunately, after what was a season where he was limited to only 25 appearances in 2020-21, and there being visible moments of frustration in-game in the two prior seasons, Love bounced back in 2021-22. There was uncertainty heading into last season when it came to Love’s outlook, and nobody could’ve known what to expect.

Donovan Mitchell Shared Awesome First Pictures In Training With ... (Fadeaway World)

Donovan Mitchell has joined up with the Cleveland Cavaliers and he seems ready to get involved and lead them to success next season.

Team chemistry is incredibly important to success, and with all the right pieces now in place, the Cavaliers will be hoping they can have a really special season. It must be said that the colors are suiting Mitchell as he looks forward to his first season with a team that is not the Jazz. Mitchell shared pictures from his initial training sessions, having joined up with the team.

Keys to Cavaliers making steps forward after Donovan Mitchell trade ... (cleveland.com)

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Scribbles in my notebook after talking to some NBA people about the Cavaliers mega-deal with Utah to bring Donovan Mitchell to Cleveland:.

Also, you need a guy who can go out and get you a basket in a tough part of the game. The Cavs have Allen (four years) and Mitchell (three years plus a player option) also under multi-year contract. They decided they were going for a chance to be really good, knowing there is a real risk of failure because of all the draft picks and assets they traded. The Cavs gave up a lot to get that young man (Mitchell),” said Fratello. The Cavs are likely not to have a first-round pick in 2023. Those are strong numbers for a rookie, but what impressed the NBA sources the most was his “elite defense.” Fratello compared the 6-foot-1 Mitchell to Joe Dumars in terms of him “having some bulk and being strong” despite also being a smaller guard. The last time a non-James team won a round was in 1993 with Lenny Wilkens as head coach. He talked about how Isaiah Thomas and Dumars (both in the 6-foot-2 range) were a great backcourt in Detroit for years. Unfortunately for his Utah team, the [ Jazz had a 3-1 lead i](https://www.basketball-reference.com/playoffs/2020-nba-western-conference-first-round-jazz-vs-nuggets.html)n that best-of-seven first-round series, then lost the last three games. The NBA sources talked about the Cavs’ problems of finding a player besides Darius Garland who can create his own shot in tough games. He did a lot of Clippers games last season, where he saw Mitchell in the Western Conference.

Why Jazz accepted Cavs' Donovan Mitchell trade offer over Knicks (ClutchPoints)

Utah Jazz general manager Justin Zanik reveals that the Cavs simply had the 'best offer' for Donovan Mitchell.

To get a good return, you have to give up something good as well. On the other hand, it was previously reported that the Knicks’ offer centered around RJ Barrett, Obi Toppin, a choice between other role players on their roster, and as many as five first-rounders. There’s been a lot of talk surrounding the Utah Jazz’s decision to pick the Cleveland Cavaliers’ trade offer for Donovan Mitchell over that of the New York Knicks.

Sexton and Markannan are clearly the players that the new-look offense will run through, and I would expect both players to average 20 points per game at a minimum. Jazz GM explains why Knicks lost to Cavs in Donovan Mitchell trade (Empire Sports Media)

The Knicks lost out on Donovan Mitchell, and the Jazz loom to become a rival in their next star hunt.

But in two years’ time, if the Jazz’s rebuild goes according to plan, they will be armed with a better draft capital, along with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Houston Rockets. They received three unprotected picks (2025, 2027 and 2029), two pick swaps in 2026 and 2028, along with Collin Sexton, who agreed to a $72 million, four-year extension, Lauri Markkanen, who is entering the second year of a $67 million, four-year extension, and Ochai Agbaji, the 14th pick of this year’s draft. With Mitchell, the Cavaliers have jumped over the Knicks in the Eastern Conference power rankings. I think for them, it was an opportunity to add to their team to open up a window with Donovan and their young group. I think they’re going to be very good,” Zanik said, referring to the Cavaliers, in a They certainly gave up a lot.”

How does Donovan Mitchell impact the 2023 NBA draft for Indiana? (8 Points, 9 Seconds)

The Indiana Pacers have had a slow offseason for news in recent months. Donovan Mitchell was traded from the Utah Jazz a few weeks ago.

Indiana did this with Aaron Holiday by packaging him with a draft pick to move up and acquire the rights to Isaiah Jackson. Even if the picks you get from Cleveland and Boston aren’t the greatest (likely), they can also be assets to move up in a draft or for another player. The receiving team (IND) then won’t get the selection and has to wait for the following season to see if (CLE) will make the playoffs. It works like this with lottery-protected picks — the team that places the protection on the selection (CLE) will keep that pick if they don’t make the playoffs (therefore being in the NBA draft lottery). [trade with Cleveland to send out Caris LeVert](https://8points9seconds.com/2022/02/06/indiana-pacers-caris-levert-trade-cavs/), and in return, they received Ricky Rubio and a lottery-protected first-round draft pick. What we learned about the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2021-22 ... (Fear the Sword)

The Cavs won 22 of the 36 games the seven-foot trio of Lauri Markannen, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen played together last season. They did this by outscoring ...

The only problem is he converted only [62.6%](https://cleaningtheglass.com/stats/player/4749#tab-shooting_accuracy) of his shots at the rim (46th percentile) and [35.8%](https://cleaningtheglass.com/stats/player/4749#tab-shooting_accuracy) from corner threes (32nd percentile). More encouragingly, Mobley showed that he could create good offensive looks for himself as 33.2% of his makes were unassisted which puts him in the [76th percentile for bigs](https://cleaningtheglass.com/stats/player/4866#tab-shooting_overall). The quickest path for Mobley to become an elite offensive player is to incrementally improve at what he has already shown he can do well. [57.6%](https://cleaningtheglass.com/stats/player/4749#tab-shooting_frequency) of his shots at the rim and [24.4%](https://cleaningtheglass.com/stats/player/4749#tab-shooting_frequency) of his shots as corner threes which are the two most efficient places to score from on the floor. Mobley’s shot looked average to start the season as he shot 34.1% from deep on 1.7 attempts per game and 78.2% from the line through his first 26 games. It’s easy to say Mobley needs to become a better shooter to become a great offensive player. We’ll see if Okoro can improve his offensive game enough to avoid a repeat situation of that this season. The three big lineups also allowed the team to get away with a 3-2 defense with Mobley at the top of the zone. There are certainly things that the coaching staff can do to get him more involved besides having him just stand stationary in the corner. He finished the campaign averaging 8.8 points and 1.8 assists on .480/.350/.768 shooting splits while playing 29.6 minutes a night. That said, the value of having three seven footers who could step up and protect the rim at any given time can’t be understated. Over the next three weeks I’m going to take a look back at the biggest things we learned from the

Re-signing Kevin Love should be the biggest priority heading into ... (Factory Of Sadness)

The Cleveland Cavaliers have a nearly complete squad for the next few years but one piece, Kevin Love, needs to be re-signed soon.

Mitchell’s arrival has changed everything and finding a trade for Love should honestly be the last thing the Cavs have on their minds. Now, Love is a different man and a different player. The Cleveland Cavaliers have a stacked squad but there remains one player who is key to the team’s future but is currently in limbo; Kevin Love.
