Five takeaways from the 2022 Emmy awards (NPR)

The 2022 Emmys handed out awards to Succession, Squid Game, Abbott Elementary, The White Lotus, Ted Lasso, Lizzo's Here's To The Big Grrrls and others.

Jean Smart won for Hacks for lead actress in a comedy series for the second year in a row. It's more an observation of public reaction than of the show itself, but standards seem to have changed for when a show has won "too much." Even a second or third win can seem rote by now, so bring on the new contenders, and we'll be glad to see them. Zendaya, who won the award for outstanding lead actress in a drama series for Euphoria two years ago, won again. Even the great Jean Smart, beloved by so many over such a tremendous career and absolutely marvelous on Hacks, might not have been the first choice of many people. The Emmys are starting to have an enviable problem: Even when people disagree with the outcome of a contest, it might be less that a show is undeserving and more that there's simply something else that deserves a shot in a stacked category. Lee Jung-jae won lead actor in a drama series for Squid Game, the first Asian man to ever be so honored. Amanda Seyfried took lead actress for The Dropout and Michael Keaton won for lead actor in Dopesick. Plus, Ted Lasso actors Jason Sudeikis and Brett Goldstein won again in the lead and supporting categories. Perhaps the nicest surprise was Lizzo's Watch Out For The Big Grrrls, which broke RuPaul's Drag Race streak of four wins in the reality competition category. But there were also great speeches and encouraging wins, and we're here to look at five takeaways from the ceremony as a whole. At the same time winners fought for spare seconds, dull montages that were little more than "here are some TV shows" were allowed to linger, as were scripted bits that seemed less satisfying than the cut-off speeches, even when those sketches were performed by able comedians like host Kenan Thompson and the very funny Bowen Yang.

Her win was entirely deserved, especially if it means that more people will watch The Dropout. What a stunning performance that was; it was as if Seyfried managed to physically alter her entire DNA a few episodes in. But I was wrong, and this was a victory for the ages. And nothing is safer than Ted Lasso, the comedy equivalent of rice pudding. The seas can rise, the mountains can fall, the sun can expand and swallow us whole, but the Emmys will still be there, doing its absolute best to do the exact same thing as it did last year. The Highs and Lows of the 2022 Emmys (The Cut)

The 2022 Emmy Awards celebrated Lizzo, 'The White Lotus,' 'Abbott Elementary,' and more. Here are all the moments from the Emmys you need to see.

Jerrod Carmichael won the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special for his deeply personal special, Rothaniel. Kel loves a reunion at the Emmys! Aside from a few “Bans Off Our Bodies” pins on the red carpet, not a word was uttered about the overturning of Roe v. “When I was a little girl, all I wanted to see was me in the media: someone fat like me, Black like me, beautiful like me,” she said. To add salt in the wound, the drama tribute even included a clip of Mandy Moore in This Is Us, arguably one of the year’s biggest snubs. Who loves a reunion at the Emmys? Yes, it was one of the funnier spontaneous moments of the night, but it also never should have happened to such a legend. It was a well-deserved, hard-fought win, and, of course, she gave the most Jennifer Coolidge speech you could imagine, starting with her reveal that she took a lavender bath in preparation for the evening and ending with a little jig. The artist celebrated all the “big girls” on the show and beyond. First, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk won Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for his work behind the camera on “Red Light, Green Light.” Then Lee Jung-jae won for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, making him the first South Korean actor to win as well as the first Asian actor to win — period. Then, when she got there, she [burst into song](https://www.thecut.com/2022/09/sheryl-lee-ralph-emmys-acceptance-speech.html), earning a rousing standing ovation from the crowd. The dancers were great, but the entire sequence felt offbeat and out of place.

Emmys 2022: Succession, Ted Lasso, The White Lotus triumph (The Guardian)

There were few surprises – and a few standout speeches – for a telecast that handed out trophies mostly to repeat winners and clear favourites.

As with last year, the Emmys packed in over 25 awards around occasional bits from Thompson (as well as announcer Sam Jay), and a special Governor’s Award to the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, which has worked to increase representation for women in front of an behind the camera. Squid Game, the first non-English language series ever nominated for best drama, kept Succession from taking a full sweep with wins for director Hwang Dong-hyuk and star Lee Jung-jae, the first person to win an acting award for a non-English language performance. Ralph, a 40-plus year veteran of the screen and first-time winner, took advantage of the Emmys’ pre-submitted thank yous that ticked on-screen below acceptance speeches and provided arguably the emotional highlight of the evening with a rendition of Endangered Species by Dianne Reeves. Noting that her “greatest wish for Euphoria was that it could help heal people”, the 26-year-old Dune star acknowledged those who shared stories related to her character, Rue, who struggles with addiction in the prestige HBO teen soap. HBO’s limited series The White Lotus, tied with Ted Lasso for second with 20 nominations apiece, swept all the awards for which it was nominated (the ensemble series about privilege and perversion at Hawaiian resort submitted all its performers to the supporting categories). The bit-packed show, hosted by Saturday Night Live veteran Kenan Thompson, included several back-to-back wins – Hacks’s Jean Smart for comedy actress, Ted Lasso’s Jason Sudeikis for comedy actor and co-star Brett Goldstein as supporting – as well as repeat nods from previous years.

The Best and Worst Moments of the 2022 Emmys (The New York Times)

A key to good comedy is having a distinctive voice. Sheryl Lee Ralph, the former “Dreamgirls” actress who won best supporting comedy actress for “Abbott ...

“The Amazing Race” has won 10 times, “The Voice” and “RuPaul’s Drag Race” each four times, and no show had won the category in its first season. “The White Lotus,” the hit HBO series that skewered the entitled behavior of wealthy vacationers, scooped up five Primetime Emmys, including the award for best limited series. The series, Netflix’s most watched new series ever, according to the streamer, was also up for the Emmy for best drama, an award “Succession” ultimately won. Both “Barry” and “What We Do in the Shadows,” two of TV’s best comedies, got shut out. The point of the show is the speeches! The show played off engaging winners like Quinta Brunson and Jennifer Coolidge while making plenty of time for inane “copaganda” segments and slow bits that went nowhere. This year’s broadcast included a massive Kia ad, smuggled in under the guise of a sketch about TV dialogue. Of its seven total nominations, one was for best comedy; had “Abbott” won, it would have been the first network comedy to do so since “Modern Family” in 2014. The rhythm of the show was weirdly off. Based on its performance in its first time out, “Abbott” should be a top Emmy contender for years to come. There was also, in the success of series like “Abbott Elementary,” evidence that the broadcasters still have some Emmy relevance left in them, even as prestige cable and streaming services claimed the biggest prizes. Along the way, there was the usual array of leaden gags, shameless commercialism and genuinely poignant moments that transcended all the award-show contrivance.

2022 Emmys: 'Abbott Elementary' and 'Squid Game' give us hope (Los Angeles Times)

Host Kenan Thompson did fine, but winners Sheryl Lee Ralph, Lizzo and Jennifer Coolidge carried the night.

Short: “Thank you so much for what was in my head a standing ovation.” Martin mentioned “walking the red carpet that I have at home.” Gomez, when Martin asked how much time they had left: “With a good diet and exercise, maybe 10, 12 years.” “I truly hope ‘Squid Game’ won’t be the last non-English series to be here at the Emmys,” said the director. “Squid Game” star Lee Jung-jae and director (also creator) Hwang Dong-hyuk, the first winners for the first nominated foreign-language series. There was a “bar set,” which supported bits featuring the Simpsons (Mo the Bartender, responding to a prank call from Bart: “Is there a Bo Tox in this celebrity audience; can any of you even raise an eyebrow here?”) and Kumail Nanjiani as an “honorary bartender” in over his head. (“Someone asked me for a martini extra dirty and I spat in it— is that right?”) The pace was fast, in a way that was somewhat exhausting. Lizzo in yards of red tulle, accepting for her “Watch Out for the Big Grrrls”: “When I was a little girl, all I wanted to see was me in the media, someone fat like me, Black like me, beautiful like me. Yes, the presence at the bar of “Kenan & Kel” co-star Kel Mitchell seemed to actually catch Thompson off guard. And he made the obvious and necessary point that “we celebrate the hundreds and hundreds of shows that were produced this year and then we give awards to about five of them.” He danced with commitment and agility in an opening number set to TV themes that, despite an energetic ensemble, felt on the whole remote. (Yes: Martin Short to audience: “I wish I could box you up and take you home like classified White House documents.”) Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the last big awards show? (No, but “Succession” creator Jesse Armstrong threw some shade at the British succession and the new king: “Evidently, a little more voting involved in our winning than Prince Charles.”) Trump the hoarder? The trophy, awarded to whatever and whomever a plurality of voters happened to watch and like or remembered liking before, almost always rewards good work, and it is nice when people or programs one admires are celebrated. Which, once again, it did, if a little closer to the former than the latter.

Emmys 2022: The Award Show Where Everything Old Is New Again ... (Rolling Stone)

The Television Academy honored a broadcast comedy and a foreign-language upstart, but mostly brought a parade of familiar faces to the stage.

[ Jean Smart](https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-news/jean-smart-jokes-rachel-brosnahan-tried-to-sabotage-emmy-win-1234591449/) from Hacks was a repeat winner. [Squid Game](https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-news/squid-game-emmy-wins-history-1234588988/) director Hwang Dong-hyuk beating former winner Jason Bateman from Ozark, presumed favorite [Ben Stiller from Severance](https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-features/severance-finale-ben-stiller-interview-1330692/), Yellowjackets pilot director Karyn Kusama, and three different Succession directors for the drama directing prize. [Dopesick](https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-reviews/dopesick-review-1236351/) star Michael Keaton and [The White Lotus](https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-reviews/white-lotus-review-1190058/) scene stealer Murray Bartlett got the evening off to a nice start. Or they could have gone both new and old simultaneously, by honoring either Steve Martin (whose last Emmy win was 53 years ago, as a writer on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour) or Martin Short for the first season of Only Murders in the Building. [Euphoria star Zendaya](https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-reviews/euphoria-season-2-review-1278174/) won her second award for the series after sitting out last year’s ceremony while the high school drama was on a long hiatus. Dropout lead Amanda Seyfried — by far the best example of this spring’s Movie Stars Play Infamous Real People In Prestige Miniseries boom — was a worthy winner and gave a sincere and pithy speech, and [Lizzo](https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-news/lizzo-wins-first-emmy-award-watch-out-for-the-big-grrrls-1234590634/) brought herself and many people in the crowd to tears talking about how she grew up desperately wanting to see “someone fat like me, Black like me, beautiful like me” on television. (And nobody in the Academy seemed to care that the (*) Initially, it seemed as if the music only kicked in when someone past their allotted time was reading off a list of names. But mostly what made it great is that Sheryl Lee Ralph is great on that show and in life, and her response to winning — beating reigning champ [Hannah Waddingham](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/hannah-waddingham-emmy-supporting-actress-comedy-win-ted-lasso-1235015360/) and several other Ted Lasso actresses — was an award-worthy spectacle in and of itself. She was frozen at first, and eventually costar Tyler James Williams helped steer her to the stage, where she again stood silent for what seemed like an eternity, especially on a night when so many other winners seemed terrified of the clock. The easiest way to win an Emmy is to have already won an Emmy, and the last few Emmy ceremonies were rendered tedious by a handful of shows hoovering up every trophy in sight. The telecast itself was a pretty dire production as usual, with even Thompson’s trademark gameness failing to elevate most of the dumb material he was given, and with lots of other bad choices in terms of comedy sketches or presentations.

Why Tom Holland didn't join Zendaya at Emmys 2022 (Page Six)

While Zendaya was making history at the Emmys 2022, one familiar face was noticeably absent: her boyfriend, Tom Holland.

“I’ve always been really adamant to keep my private life private, because I share so much of my life with the world anyway. Emmys 2022: The best and worst moments (Mashable)

"When I was a little girl, all I wanted to see was me in the media. "Thank you to director Hwang [Dong-hyuk] for making realistic problems we all face come to life so creatively on the screen with a great script and amazing visuals," said Lee. [Sheryl Lee Ralph's momentous acceptance speech](https://mashable.com/video/sheryl-lee-ralph-emmys-speech-song) and Jennifer Coolidge dancing to the play-off music to grating ads and confusing opening numbers, here are the best and worst moments from the 2022 Emmys... "Mum, Dad, Tara and Matt, Zebby and Bo, I fucking love you." "If I could go back and tell little Lizzo something, I'd be like, 'You gonna see that person, but bitch it's gonna have to be you.'" When Brunson was called to the stage, though, Kimmel didn't move — he kept lying there throughout her speech. Apparently the Emmys producers had other ideas, though, playing her off after only 70 seconds. Yellowjackets won nothing. Severance won nothing. How the 2022 Emmys Almost (Almost!) Gave Acceptance Speeches ... (Variety)

At the 2022 Emmys, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Lizzo's speeches proved how much the show depends on letting winners have their moments.

As much as anyone tunes into the Emmys these days, it’s to see the people who make television get their moment in the spotlight and listen to what they have to say. When winners actually got the chance to be themselves and let the chyron do the requisite industry rounds for them, the Emmys came as close as they have in recent memory to getting the balance right. Instead, they whizzed by underneath as she told the story of growing up wishing “to see someone fat like me, Black like me, beautiful like me.” [John Oliver](https://variety.com/t/john-oliver/), accepting the seventh(!) consecutive Emmy for “Last Week Tonight,” could switch it up a little bit with a cheeky shoutout in the scroll to his absent staff (“thank you, and don’t worry: we’ll say hello to Oscar Isaac for you”).

The Emmys Really Tried Some Things (Vulture)

A review of the 2022 Emmy Awards ceremony, hosted by 'Saturday Night Live' veteran Kenan Thompson, where 'Ted Lasso,' 'Succession' and 'The White Lotus' ...

Undeniably the most sublime of all was [Ralph’s acceptance speech](https://www.vulture.com/2022/09/emmys-2022-sheryl-lee-ralph-sings-acceptance-speech.html), when she launched into “Endangered Species,” using every molecule of oxygen in her lungs to celebrate her first Emmy win after years of working on the stage and screen. The rare time Zedd played something perfectly evocative of the past year in TV — Kate Bush’s [“Running Up That Hill”](https://www.vulture.com/tags/running-up-that-hill/) — it came during a moment that had absolutely nothing to do with Stranger Things. It was emotional, inspirational, the sort of spontaneous expression that makes you appreciate what it’s like to watch a talent be overtaken by their gift on live television. In other words, the Emmys felt different and the same, filled with familiar characters as well as shout-outs to shows that some people didn’t even know existed. And while a lot of the major winners were predictable, this year’s awards also reflected the wide spectrum of places to find good television. There was a sense that the voters, as well as the producers, had decided to try some things. [Elaborately dressed](https://www.vulture.com/2022/09/emmys-red-carpet-2022-photos.html) actors and creators accepted trophies, some of them well deserved (Sheryl Lee Ralph!), some of them less so (a directing award for a Ted Lasso episode instead of that episode of Barry with the motorcycle chase?). These served as reminders that, as much as television is about great storytelling and allowing audiences to feel seen, it’s also being made in an environment where every network and streaming conglomerate is more desperate than ever for money and eyeballs. [A lot of those trophies](https://www.vulture.com/2022/09/emmys-2022-winners-full-list.html) went to shows that have won before — Ted Lasso, Succession, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver (which nabbed Outstanding Variety Talk Series for the seventh consecutive year), and Saturday Night Live (named Outstanding Variety Sketch Series for the sixth year in a row). After a largely virtual ceremony in 2020 and one held half-indoors and half-outdoors because of a rise in COVID-19 cases in 2021, this was the first “normal” Emmy Awards in three years. And it was normal in a lot of ways. Yeah, [the Emmys don’t make sense sometimes](https://www.vulture.com/2022/07/emmy-award-nominations-limited-series-limitations.html).

At last night’s Emmys, Bob Odenkirk, John Turturro, Michael Keaton, Tony Shalhoub—all distinguished actors of a certain age—let us in on their secret: wear the classic suit, but also throw on a pair of sunglasses. Sun is still very much up there in the sky—so opting for sunglasses on the red carpet is also, ultimately, a practical choice. It also felt like the actors were having fun getting all dressed up, too, as evidenced by

When the house band played Lizzo’s song “About Damn Time,” Lizzo was front and center on the dance floor singing along — surely a boost to the ego of the house band’s lead singer. The warm-up MC, comedian Chris Spencer, who shared lots of other advice with the attendees and potential winners about what to do if they won, made a very specific point about any potential stage jumpers: “If any of you have the urge to come up on this stage, just know you will get your ass severely beat,” he told the crowd, adding that there were MMA fighters in disguise in the audience who would swiftly take down any potential stage crashers, famous or not. The upper half of the theater remained in row seating for the rest of us. But there was plenty of action at the 2022 Emmys that didn’t make it onto the broadcast, and Rebecca Ford, Joy Press, Natalie Jarvey and Chris Murphy were at the ceremony and the after-parties to catch it all. But this year, the orchestra part of the Microsoft Theater in Downtown LA was transformed into ballroom seating, with talent at tables that also included food and drink service. Pre-pandemic, the Emmys almost always featured theater-style seating, which put the talent in rows with the rest of the attendees.

The 2022 Emmys Were Haunted by the Streaming Era's Recent ... (GQ Magazine)

Host Kenan Thompson and some well-deserved wins kept things up beat, but it was hard to ignore some ominous undercurrents to the night.

Netflix has had to reassess its priorities following April’s [announcement that it lost 200,000 subscribers](https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/netflix-loses-subscribers-q1-earnings-1235234858/) and a July follow-up in which the service [revealed it had lost nearly a million more](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/07/19/business/media/netflix-earnings.html). How much the HBO of 2023 and beyond will resemble the HBO of 2022 and the years leading up to it remains to be seen. The central question comes down to this: Yes, HBO and HBO Max won big. [Batgirl.](https://www.gq.com/story/batgirl-shelved-wb) It’s not yet clear what will happen next but, beneath the gratitude, Oliver’s comment sounds like the sentiment of a creator bracing for impact. Oliver’s show was just one of many picked up this year by HBO and HBO Max, one of 37 to be precise. That upbeat spirit carried over into the ceremony itself, from the intros to the speeches to the (sometimes endless-seeming) bits that padded the evening out.

Among the attendees was Zendaya, winner of lead actress in drama for the second time (lead actor in drama went to Lee Jung-jae for Netflix’s “Squid Game”). “It’s finally nice to put faces with names,” she went on. “It’s not a caricature of Africa. “It’s America meets Africa,” he said of the series, which features Black actors in lead roles. It was the best way to find out.” Nearby, the cast of HBO’s “Succession,” too, was celebrating another win. (Despite 46 nominations in six seasons, “Better Call Saul” has yet to win an Emmy.) “It’s hard to explain,” Lynskey said of the attention she was receiving. “Thank you,” she echoed, bashfully. There was a standing ovation and the longest applause of the night when she took the stage. “Great,” she roared with all her might, trophy in hand, at Governors Ball. Jason Sudeikis, actor and creator of “Ted Lasso,” held two.
