Nvidia's GeForce RTX 4090 could be an overclocking champ, with a 2.52 GHz boost clock that Nvidia has already pushed beyond 3.0 GHz "in its labs."
How many of these boards will be able to hit 3 GHz remains to be seen, but it's certainly a possibility for at least some of the models. One of the things we don't know with AD102-based graphics boards is how much power a 3 GHz GPU frequency will require. Naturally, liquid nitrogen should enable the GPU to be pushed even further.
The wait is over. The rumour mill can stop spinning, however briefly, and we can pore over the details Nvidia has released for its new top card.
In the meantime, Nvidia has released some figures, just to show how its latest architecture compares with its previous best Ampere offering, the RTX 3090 Ti. In Microsoft Flight Simulator and Warhammer 40,000: Darktide you're looking at a respectable doubling of the frame rate. It's worth noting that both the RTX 3090 and RTX 3090 Ti weren't really aimed at gamers, but more at the semi-professional crowd. Top of the pile is the GeForce RTX 4090, which will be the first card to be released. It's the most expensive offering of those announced so far, but it also packs a mighty punch when it comes, if Nvidia's own benchmarks are to be believed. The new XLR8 and Verto models have been modified to meet the demands of the new RTX 40 series GPUs, using 3-fan cooling solutions, up to eight heat pipes and support kits to prevent them from sagging or bending. Besides the Phoenix cards, Gainward will also have the Phantom and Phantom Reunion series. Moreover, the Vulcan cards feature a dock station where you choose to mount RGB strips or a customisable iGame Smart LCD. Starting from the bottom, the X3 OC cards will be the most standard, packing a 3-fan cooling solution (3x98mm), nine heat pipes, and a large vapour chamber to cool the GPU. Galax decided to start with a single series of graphics cards, probably expanding in the future. As the name suggests, the Phantom cards will have a darker colour scheme. Like the standard Phantom GPUs, it uses the new Cyclone fans, diffuser fins, and Hyper Conductive heat pipes to cool the GPU. Unlike the new TUF Gaming cards with varying sizes depending on the GPU, the new Strix models are all 3.5-slot thick and 357mm long. All models feature nine heat pipes and a 3-fan cooling solution, but the AMP Extreme Airo cards have the middle fan counter-rotating for even better cooling performance. As for Ventus, the more modest series will be slimmer than the other air-cooled cards and will use Torx 4.0 fans.

Leading makers of waterblocks prep for extreme Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 overclocking.
[GeForce RTX 4090](https://www.tomshardware.com/news/nvidia-geforce-rtx-4090-rtx-4080-price-release-date-specs-revealed) announcement, [Alphacool](https://www.alphacool.com/detail/index/sArticle/30435) and [EKWB](https://www.ekwb.com/news/ek-goes-above-and-beyond/) today introduced waterblocks for Nvidia's GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition and reference graphics cards. Thus, while Nvidia's GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition promises to be a good overclocker (at least from Nvidia's own words), some of its partners' offerings — which rumors suggest may have overclocking BIOSes — may offer even better potential. [waterblocks](https://www.tomshardware.com/news/ekwb-announces-new-waterblock-pump-combo-for-small-form-factor-builds) from EKWB is that they are designed only for Nvidia's own Founders Edition GeForce RTX 4090 graphics cards and not for reference boards or custom boards from the company's partners. EKWB's EK-Quantum Vector² water blocks are designed for Nvidia's GeForce RTX 4090 FE boards and closely follow the company's Quantum Vector concept of covering the whole board — thereby cooling down the GPU, memory, and power delivery circuitry. The waterblock consists of a chrome-plated copper coldplate that cools down the GPU, memory, and the voltage regulating module with transparent acrylic top. In fact, EKWB already says that a [3 GHz GPU frequency is possible for Nvidia's AD102 graphics chip](https://www.tomshardware.com/news/nvidia-overclocked-rtx-4090-past-3ghz) with proper cooling.

AMD Radeon RX 6900 graphics card hovers over an AMD red and black background. We don't have concrete performance data on RX 7000 GPUs yet — AMD is set to reveal ...
[RX 6800 XT is around 5% behind](https://www.techspot.com/review/2427-geforce-rtx-3080-vs-radeon-6800-xt/) the RTX 3080, and most games don’t see much of a difference at all. [RX 6950 XT](https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/amd-radeon-rx-6950-xt-review/) show that AMD is able to compete at the top levels of GPU performance while still undercutting Nvidia on price. And as the next generation of graphics cards starts to roll out, Nvidia doesn’t look like it’s on the winning end. Assuming AMD keeps the pricing the same, it would have to release a worse GPU than its previous generation to lose out to Nvidia. [announcement of the RTX 4090](https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/nvidia-rtx-4090-rtx-4080-launch-geforce-beyond/): the RTX 3080 isn’t going anywhere. If the RTX 4090 and the two RTX 4080 models came in at last-gen prices, we’d have a much more competitive GPU market. If you’re in the market for a GPU below $1,000, the only 40-series option available is the 12GB RTX 4080, and even then, you’re at the high end of flagship pricing. The company has been clear that it has excess inventory of RTX 30-series graphics cards, and there’s not enough demand for them. As shown during the [GeForce Beyond presentation](https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/nvidia-gtc-2022-everything-announced/) and reiterated to the press in a briefing, Nvidia sees the RTX 3080 as the GPU to buy for around $700, at least for the time being. [RTX 4090](https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/nvidia-rtx-4090-news-specs-price-release-date/) is official, and it’s launching in a few short weeks; if you can stomach the $1,600 price tag, that is. That puts Nvidia in a precarious position considering [AMD’s RX 7000 GPUs](https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/amd-radeon-rx-7000-series-everything-you-need-to-know/) are right around the corner.
Nvidia has finally announced the RTX 40 series, and alongside higher performance, these new GPUs come with high price tags.
The RTX 4080 16GB offers over 2,000 more CUDA cores, 4GB more VRAM, and more memory bandwidth than the RTX 4080 12GB for $300 more. The RTX 4080 16GB has 9,728 CUDA cores, while the RTX 4080 12GB has just 7,680. What has not been pictured yet is the new heatsink underneath the updated frame, redesigned vapor-chamber and new base plate. The PCB looks almost identical to the RTX 3090 Ti from Founders Edition. The compact PCB for NVIDIA’s own massive triple-slot RTX 4090 design has just as many power stages as RTX 3090 Ti. NVIDIA is also making some claims regarding the design of Founders Edition. The PCB is designed for PCIe Gen 12+4-pin (12VHPWR) connector, drawing up to 600W when GPU is overclocked. The RTX 4090 PCB has better power transient management, claims NVIDIA.
