“I had to have accommodations through school, and I learned to ask for those things,” he said. He said those moments are a kind of celebration for the families, and he enjoys being part of it. This realization hit him while he was working in Wichita and saw a young man he had worked with when he was younger. He said sometimes he goes places and hears people comment that the bathrooms aren’t clean. In addition to being an adoptee, Rich was familiar with the work because his parents were foster parents when he was growing up. He lived in Wichita and Iowa and moved back to Manhattan in 2012.

“Getting To Know …” is a weekly feature spotlighting people making a difference in the lives of others. A: We’re a hidden jewel in Schenectady and we should have had so much more coverage. A: HealthySteps is a program embedded into pediatric offices and hospitals, where you have a social worker, who is the HealthySteps specialist, and they then become part of that integral team. So that’s the most challenging thing we face. We had stuff delivered to the homes. We need recognition, we need coverage, we need money. Growing up in a family of 12, I was one of the younger ones – I was the 11th child, actually, of the 12. We made sure that they got food and they got diapers. We split the clinic into morning and afternoon sick visits and well-check visits, so we could see all the kids. We never left the kids behind. Making sure that they have the transportation, and follow-up appointments, all of those things. HealthySteps is a national program created by the nonprofit Zero To Three, however, Ellis is the only local healthcare facility that offers it, according to McDaniel.

New guidance from the Centre of expertise on child sexual abuse seeks to help social workers help schools respond to harmful sexual behaviour.
Rough estimates suggest that a child in England spends over a thousand hours a year in school, so it is not surprising that teachers and those in education settings are often the first to identify and respond to incidents of harmful sexual behaviour. It is this experience, and those of my colleagues at the Centre of expertise on child sexual abuse (CSA Centre) who have been in Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility, but I believe it is social workers who are best placed to support teachers and other professionals in this task. Part of our role was to offer consultation to social workers, foster carers and schools when there were concerns of harmful sexual behaviour. While schools need to respond better, they also need our help. We still see sexually harmful behaviour as different from other types of harmful behaviour and all too often our perceptions and discomfort result in poor responses to children. As a social worker there were many occasions when a child or young person on my caseload displayed sexual behaviour that was of concern to others. Later in my social work career, I managed an in-house specialist service which worked with children and families affected by child sexual abuse. With these factors in mind, social workers working across a range of teams are highly likely to come across this issue within their practice. Having clear advice and guidance meant professionals in all settings could respond more confidently to protect and support both the children who had been harmed, and those who had harmed. [Last year’s reviews of sexual abuse in education settings by Ofsted (in England)](https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/review-of-sexual-abuse-in-schools-and-colleges/review-of-sexual-abuse-in-schools-and-colleges) and [Estyn (in Wales)](https://www.estyn.gov.wales/system/files/2021-12/Experiences%20of%20peer-on-peer%20sexual%20harassment%20among%20secondary%20school%20pupils%20in%20Wales%20-%20Supporting%20resources.pdf) further exposed the enormity of the issue in schools. The volume of cases of sexual abuse in education settings submitted to the

Cuyahoga County Council approved an over $5 per hour pay raise for social workers to help retain and attract staff at the Division of Children and Family ...
They described being assaulted and forced to provide childcare for kids sleeping at the office and accused county policies of putting children at risk. The contract gives roughly $639,000 each to Specialized Alternatives for Families and Youth Services of Ohio, Inc., Providence House, Inc., and Ohio Mentor to help them expand services for infants and children with specialized needs. If approved in committee, it will move to the full council for second reading and could become immediately effective. Merriman said immediate funding will come from the county’s general fund, including HHS levy dollars and about $5 million in Another one of his promises was to find more beds for youth awaiting placement and prevent children from staying another night in the office building. Records also confirmed children becoming victims of sexual abuse or rape while in county custody. The county currently has 150 social worker vacancies, Jacqueline Fletcher, DCFS’ interim director said. It also allows workers to receive raises faster, moving through four step increases, rather than the current nine. But the real game-changer, county officials say, is a $10.8 million contract with The Centers for Families and Children to hold eight beds for emergency county placements and offer signing bonuses and raises to attract and retain the staffing needed to operate them. [one of the promises Budish made](https://www.cleveland.com/news/2022/09/cuyahoga-county-proposing-solutions-to-placement-crisis-to-prevent-youth-staying-at-dcfs-office.html) in an August interview with [cleveland.com](http://cleveland.com/), where his staff outlined plans to better safeguard children in the county’s custody amid disturbing reports of youth sleeping at the Jane Edna Hunter Social Services Center and potentially being exposed to sexual exploitation. In the August interview, Merriman called the contracts a “breakthrough” in the county’s efforts to secure more bedspace. CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cuyahoga County social workers will now be one of the highest paid in the state, making good on one of Executive Armond Budish’s promises to increase wages to help fix problems at the Division of Children and Family Services office.
