Researchers at the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Centre Aquaculture Department (SEAFDEC/AQD) in the Philippines are promoting the pompano farming ...
The technology to produce pompano is there, and SEAFDEC continues to add refinements every year. However, despite its proven culinary and aquaculture value worldwide, pompano is yet to take off in the Philippines. SEAFDEC/AQD has been raising pompano in marine fish cages since 2008, feeding them formulated feeds. “With its superior taste and premium value, pompano is something fish farmers should seriously consider. This silvery fish, with a pearly-white meat when cooked, is known as “apahan” or “dawis lawin” in the Philippines. It’s no wonder that the pompano is called by some to be the “world’s most edible fish.”

“But given the highly industrialised nature of many parts of the Salish Sea, they correctly had concerns about pollutant levels in the foods that they had traditionally harvested for so long. Suresh Kaneriya of Kaneriya Oil Industries believes that everytime you take a queen, you have to take a cover. And they have got Gujarat covered.
Intense competition and the fragmented nature of the industry means low operating margins and vulnerability to changes in prices. Kaneriya Oil Industries, the rating agency points out in its note, derives benefit from having a presence in the agricultural belt of Gujarat which leads to easy access to suppliers and customers. The challenge for them, he underlines, would be to keep resisting the temptation of taking the throne in every state. From ₹460.15 crore in FY16, the operating revenue increased to ₹668.6 crore in FY20. It was 1981, and edible oil brands in Rajkot were still averse to reaching out to consumers through the regional language papers. The Kaneriyas have built a dominant oil empire with Rani “We wanted to be the queen of the kitchen,” he says. While groundnut oil was still the queen, the Kaneriyas didn’t have a cover: Cottonseed oil. The market, after all, was largely unorganised, and in spite of four strong local players, there was no clear winner in the business of groundnut oil. Whoever goes first has to break the circle in the middle of the board. I just have to smartly flick the striker and aim at the queen,” Suresh said to himself. Along with a few relatives in the city, the Kaneriyas started an oil mill.
