Cutting down the Amazon does not build prosperity for most Brazilians (Mongabay.com)

Indeed, the economic indicators for municipalities with less than 40% forest cover in 1986 were no different than those of similar municipalities with more than 60% forest cover from 1986 to 2019. To do this, we looked at forest change and economic indicators for nearly 800 municipalities covering almost five million hectares in the Brazilian Amazon from 2002 to 2019. Specifically we wanted to see whether the arguments advanced by deforestation proponents hold up to scrutiny. - Deforestation proponents in Brazil routinely argue that cutting down the Amazon is an effective way to alleviate poverty. - We found no association between forest loss and these economic indicators. For example, the Bolsonaro administration’s official statement to the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference asserted that “where there is a lot of forest there is also a lot of poverty”, implying that forest cover is inversely correlated to human well-being.

What Jair Bolsonaro did to the Amazon rainforest, in 2 charts (Vox)

In Brazil's upcoming election, former president Lula could beat Bolsonaro. What does that mean for the Amazon?

Lula understands the importance of preserving the Amazon — because he did that when he was president.” [served time in jail](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/nov/08/lula-brazil-released-prison-supreme-court-ruling) on controversial corruption charges, has [pledged](https://www.programajuntospelobrasil.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/documento-diretrizes-programaticas-vamos-juntos-pelo-brasil-20.06.22.pdf) to protect the Amazon. That makes Lula the “ [greenest](https://www.oc.eco.br/marina-faz-revolucao-verde-em-programa-de-lula/)” candidate in the field, according to Observatório do Clima, an environmental coalition in Brazil. Scientists estimate that if that number reaches [20 to 25 percent](https://www.amazonconservation.org/the-challenge/threats/#:~:text=Estimates%20place%20the%20current%20deforestation,point%20at%2020%2D25%20percent), parts of the tropical ecosystem could dry out, threatening the millions of people and animals that depend on it. “The Brazilian government is fully committed to reducing deforestation rates in Brazil, in particular in the Amazon,” a government representative told Vox. “Let’s go back to doing what we’ve been doing,” Lula said in the radio interview. The ministry pointed Vox to a government task force, launched last summer, called Guardians of the Biome. The destruction remained [relatively low](http://www.obt.inpe.br/OBT/assuntos/programas/amazonia/prodes) over the next few years (though it crept back up after 2012, partly because Brazil [weakened a law](https://news.mongabay.com/2019/03/brazils-new-forest-code-puts-vast-areas-of-protected-amazon-forest-at-risk/) that requires private landowners to protect a portion of their land). “The amount actually used is the lowest in 20 years,” she said. Between August 1, 2019, and July 31, 2021 — a period that largely overlaps with Bolsonaro’s first three years in office — more than 34,000 square km (8.4 million acres) disappeared from the Amazon, not including many losses from natural forest fires. [show](https://www.as-coa.org/articles/poll-tracker-brazils-2022-presidential-election) “Lula,” as he is widely known, with a large lead. Under President Bolsonaro, deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon has surged.

Rampant deforestation under Jair Bolsonaro has turned Brazil into the sixth largest emitter of carbon dioxide.

“Having the powerful middle income nation of Brazil pushing for greater and more equitable climate action will be good news for all countries in the Global South.” Lula would likely return Brazil to a pivotal spot at the climate diplomacy table. Lula is going to need public pressure and international support to essentially take back control of a region that makes up 60 per cent of the country.” The environmental benefits of a new Lula presidency would also stretch beyond the Amazon. But if Lula wins the election, and is able to reimpose environmental regulations, then the gains could be substantial. Brazil is also the largest economy and the largest consumer of energy in South America; what happens in the country is significant to the entire region. He has also vowed to clamp down on illegal mining prospectors in the region, and said he would be willing to accept international help in protecting the forest – something Bolsonaro vehemently opposes. The latest data shows that 3,988 square kilometres of the Brazilian Amazon – an area two and a half times the size of Greater London – was lost in the first six months of 2022 alone. Cláudio Ângelo, from the Brazil-based Climate Observatory, said, “Armed criminal organisations in the Amazon have spent the last four years feeling free to do whatever they like. “If Bolsonaro wins,” explained Ane Alencar, from the non-profit IPAM Amazônia, “we will see the criminal gangs that control the Amazon region consolidate their grip, and it will become hard to ever impose good governance on the region again.” This is largely a result of forest fires – many of which are started deliberately to clear land for agriculture – now producing more carbon than the remaining trees absorb each year. After more than a decade of declining or stable deforestation rates in the Brazilian Amazon, the past four years under the country’s right-wing president, [Jair Bolsonaro](https://www.newstatesman.com/tag/jair-bolsonaro), has brought a dramatic year-on-year increase of cleared, forested land.
