[(7203.T)](https://www.reuters.com/companies/7203.T) has invested $394 million in Joby. Joby has said it plans to launch air taxi service in 2024. Archer Aviation [(ACHR.N)](https://www.reuters.com/companies/ACHR.N) is backed by United Airlines [(UAL.O)](https://www.reuters.com/companies/UAL.O) and Stellantis NV [(STLA.MI)](https://www.reuters.com/companies/STLA.MI), while Vertical Aerospace's investors include American Airlines Inc [(AAL.O)](https://www.reuters.com/companies/AAL.O) and Honeywell International [(HON.O)](https://www.reuters.com/companies/HON.O). [(DAL.N)](https://www.reuters.com/companies/DAL.N) said Tuesday it invested $60 million in air taxi startup Joby Aviation [(JOBY.N)](https://www.reuters.com/companies/JOBY.N) for a 2% equity stake, in a partnership that will initially offer passengers air taxi transport to and from airports in New York and Los Angeles. The agreement will be mutually exclusive across the United States and UK for five years after its commercial launch, the companies said, and run alongside Joby's standard airport service in priority markets. The companies declined to say how much the service will cost or how they will split revenue, but Bevirt said a hypothetical trip to New York's JFK airport could be shrunk from an hour or more to less than 10 minutes by air. [in May](/business/autos-transportation/joby-receives-faa-nod-start-air-taxi-services-commercially-2022-05-26/) received its Part 135 Air Carrier Certification from the Federal Aviation Administration, but before it can begin service will need additional regulatory approvals for its electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, as well as for building airport infrastructure and so-called "Vertiports" in neighborhoods for takeoffs and landings. Joby CEO JoeBen Bevirt told reporters that routes to and from airports will be the "cornerstone" of Joby's service. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Asked if the companies anticipated beginning service by then, Bastian did not commit to a precise date, but said: "We do have a couple years to go in terms of figuring out how to start the journey." The companies plan to integrate a Joby-operated service into Delta's customer-facing channels to provide short-range airport transport, which Bastian said would save passengers time and distraction. Delta Chief Executive Ed Bastian told reporters the airline will also receive a board seat and the total investment could be increased to as much as $200 million.

Some are targeting 2024, but Joby CEO Bevirt won't commit to a launch date. [American Airlines](/quotes/AAL/) has invested $25 million in Vertical Aerospace and ordered 50 aircraft from the U.K. [United Airlines](/quotes/UAL/) has two eVTOL investments and aircraft orders. The other for $10 million with Archer Aviation and an order for 100 Archer eVTOLs. have all taken stakes with eVTOL startups. Delta CEO Ed Bastian envisions moving passengers to and from airports quicker and with less hassle.

The California maker of air taxis will work with the airline giant to lift passengers off to airports in NYC and Los Angeles.

In a news briefing, Bevirt and Bastian remain vague when describing specific timelines, implying that eVTOLs will likely not unfold their wings for at least a few years. But unlike helicopters, they are quite nearly silent, muffling the roar of a typically deafening engine down to a soft whooshing noise. Delta chief executive Ed Bastian noted that his company’s investment in Joby—which totals $60 million, equating to a roughly 2% stake in the eVTOL maker—differs from the bets other carriers have been placing on eVTOLs, in that Delta does not intend to purchase and operate the aircraft itself, but rather is enlisting Joby to build what it describes as a sort of VIP airport experience for Delta customers. Meanwhile, American Airlines has [signed for aircraft](https://news.aa.com/news/news-details/2021/American-Airlines-Invests-in-the-Future-of-Urban-Air-Mobility-FLT-06/default.aspx) from Bristol, England-headquartered Vertical Aerospace, expected to ship circa 2025. The specifics of the partnership, including the timeline for its rollout, are still up in the air, but the deal will pioneer eVTOLS on the consumer market, starting with the home-to-airport commute, an area where both companies see tremendous potential. Today, it’s unveiling a partnership with Delta Air Lines to bring Joby’s futuristic air taxis to New York and Los Angeles within the next few years.

offer to airports in New York and Los Angeles. Those numbers seem absurdly large, Bleecker Street Research, an investment firm has taken a short position in Joby, said in a [recently published analysis](https://www.bleeckerstreetresearch.com/research/joby) of the company. Joby and Delta haven't secured or built any such vertiports to date. It also makes the vehicle's power train and some small electronics for it at a separate facility in San Carlos. [investor presentation](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1819848/000119312521053631/d135823dex992.htm) last year, the company projected it would have an average of 141 aircraft in service in 2024, 963 two years later and some 14,000 by 2031. Most notably, Joby has to get regulatory approval to fly passengers in its aircraft. Although it's flown more than 1,000 test flights of the vehicle, demonstrating the aircraft's range, speed, altitude and noise, it has yet to fly any tests with a pilot on board. And because they expect Joby's vehicles to be less expensive to maintain and operate than helicopters, they think they'll be able to profitably offer a lower-priced service. The pair plan to eventually offer door-to-airport service, providing car transportation — potentially from Joby investor and partner Uber Technologies Inc. The two companies announced Tuesday they're teaming up to offer just such a service in the future. The Atlanta-based airline pledged to eventually invest as much as $200 million in Joby (NYSE:JOBY) if the latter, a developer of electric-powered vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, or eVTOLs, hits certain performance milestones. Because they expect Joby's aircraft to be quieter than helicopters, they say they will be able to offer service from so-called vertiports that are much more conveniently located and widespread than today's helipads.
