Three Things to Know: Lakers vs Timberwolves Preseason 10-12-22 (Lakers.com)

The Lakers play Minnesota for a second time in the preseason on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. on Spectrum SportsNet and ESPN, at Crypto.com Arena.

That stands in contrast to what the Lakers may put out there with AD at the five. 28, in Minnesota, where it’ll be very interesting to see the contrast in styles, if that’s how both coaches go. “I’ve been with him since 2013 when I was drafted in Atlanta and he’s been nothing but great to me and learning from him over the years, staying in touch. “Everybody else, they just got to do their part to impact the game, and for me defensively, I’m going to try to be defensive-minded,” he said. While centers Damian Jones and Thomas Bryant are still working to integrate themselves into the system, it’s been a natural fit for perimeter players like Patrick Beverley, Austin Reaves, Lonnie Walker and Kendrick Nunn. But indications thus far from Coach Darvin Ham are that he’ll start the season at center, perhaps due more to L.A.’s guard depth.

NBA: Preseason Game Preview #4: Wolves at Lakers (Canis Hoopus)

The short-handed Minnesota Timberwolves are saving their best for Friday night's preseason finale against the Brooklyn Nets.

The last time LeBron James went to battle with Minnesota, Beverley and his Wolves team clowned James and the Lakers of the building. LeBron hasn’t put on much of a show for Wolves fans in recent years, so one would hope that changes with this matchup. He breathed a confidence and swagger not only into a team that needed it, but into a sleeping giant fanbase needing a reason to support its favorite squad. Shortly thereafter, the Jazz re-routed the three-time All-Defense Team honoree to Los Angeles for young wings Talen Horton-Tucker and Stanley Johnson. The guy will remain a beloved figure among Wolves faithful for as long as he lives. Tonight marks the first time Minneapolis folk hero Patrick Beverley will suit up against his former team.

If that holds up for the regular season, Beverley’s annoying defense will help the Lakers set the right tone defensively to begin games. Meanwhile, James continued to do what he always does. [October 13, 2022] But that run was too little, too late, as it fell by the final score of 118-113.

There are plenty of other issues around the edges of LeBron and AD, but if those two are playing at this level, the team will have a chance on most nights this year. Here’s to this being a one-game blip early in the Darvin Ham Era. The game had an odd feel to it for most of the night (more on that shortly) but AD and LeBron looked terrific yet again. And as so many people kindly pointed out in my mentions, Russ was apparently talking to the referee in that clip just off screen. But something just felt odd about this game, maybe highlighted most statistically by their abysmal 10-of-38 shooting from the arc, a number that improved drastically in the fourth quarter when reserves were in. But this is also LeBron and AD continuing their strong play throughout the preseason. The Lakers Big Three of Russell Westbrook, LeBron James and Anthony Davis were joined by Patrick Beverley and Lonnie Walker IV. LeBron James and Anthony Davis both looked tremendous once again on the night while four of the five Lakers starters reached double figures. PatBev potentially being in the starting lineup isn’t much of a surprise given his 3-and-D abilities. Statistically, LeBron led the team with 25 points while AD chipped in 19 while playing 25 and 27 minutes, respectively. Before exiting the game due to a sprained ankle in the third quarter, Walker had 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting in 19 minutes. [Lakers](https://www.silverscreenandroll.com) lost for the fourth time in five preseason games on Wednesday, 118-113.

Lakers: Lonnie Walker IV impresses in preseason loss (Los Angeles Times)

Lakers star Anthony Davis was impressed by the performance of teammate Lonnie Walker IV against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night.

But he’s going to take our competitiveness, our energy, he’s going to take that up a level. And if we defend, we’re gonna give ourselves a chance to win every single night no matter if the ball’s going in or not.” We know what we want to accomplish on a game-to-game basis,” said James, who was two of four from three-point range. “He’s a guy that’s going to try to defend the best of them, take a challenge — [Minnesota’s] Anthony Edwards. “At the end of the day, you’re gonna have games where you make it, and you’re gonna have games where you don’t make it and you got great looks. Walker didn’t panic, keeping his patience to find a cutting James, who was fouled on the play. Walker had just one assist, but he was decisive in his actions. … He’s going to thrive in that system.” He’s a guy that’s not going to give up. “I asked him if he was OK and he said ‘Yeah, I’ll be fine,’” Ham said. It could be totally different when he wakes up in the morning.” But he played really well before he went down.
