[Caleb Martin](http://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/3138160/caleb-martin) became the 76th player in Heat history to get an opening-night start. Bulls: Dragic was 4 for 4 from 3-point range in the first half. Chicago started the second half on a 34-19 run, breaking open what was a 59-59 halftime tie and turning it into a 93-78 lead. LaVine played in three of Chicago’s preseason games and experienced discomfort in recent days — which Donovan said is to be expected, given that LaVine was limited for much of the summer. It was the second-most points DeRozan had ever scored in an opener, behind only the 40 he had for Toronto against Detroit on Oct. He made 14 of 22 shots from the floor.
In what is a concerning issue, Bulls' All-Star Zach LaVine will miss the season opener due to "left knee management" following offseason surgery.
Rookie [Jalen Duren](https://www.nbcsportsedge.com/basketball/nba/player/66332/jalen-duren) might be a steal, he had 14 off the bench. But the Pelicans challenged the Nets and ran right over them — the toughness and grit needed to win in the NBA was not on display. Bojan Bogdanovic had 24 points as the veteran, and A win that helps exorcize the demons of last season. With Luka Doncic running the show, the Mavericks were up by 22 and seemingly in total control of the game. Jonas Valanciunas had 13 rebounds to go with his 15 points, and he was a big part of the Pelicans dominating in the paint. Two huge shots from Damion Lee capped off a dramatic and cathartic comeback. The Pelicans grabbed the offensive rebound on 45.3% of their missed shots — 21 offensive boards — on their way to 36 second-chance points (the Nets had four). Kevin Durant looked great, scoring 32 points on 11-of-22 shooting, and he even had four blocks. On offense he looked like an awkward fit trying to figure out how to playoff off Kevin Durant and The scary thing for the rest of the league? The talent on the roster is unquestionable, but does this team have the grit, the toughness, the determination to push through when things get hard?
Zach LaVine missing the Chicago Bulls' season opener against the Miami Heat was concerning, but DeMar DeRozan and Co. overcame the adversity with a huge ...
While the LaVine injury is still worrying and will need to be monitored, perhaps all season, this big victory was a nice reminder of how awesome DeRozan is and gave some hope Chicago can weather the storm of these early injury woes. A blowout loss in conjunction with the LaVine injury news would have brought about plenty of doom and gloom. This was a terrific team effort for the Bulls, who routinely got destroyed by the best teams in the Eastern Conference last season, the Heat included. On a related note, it was also a surprise to see the Bulls outscore the Heat from beyond the arc, going 13-of-36 to Miami’s 12-of-28. LaVine brushed off his absence for the Heat game and said he was just being “safe,” but Bulls head coach Billy Donovan admitted LaVine has been feeling some “discomfort” and “soreness,” But the Bulls didn’t back down, catching Miami in the second quarter and then taking full control in the third quarter behind, who else, DeMar DeRozan.
The Chicago Bulls face the Miami Heat on the NBA's opening night. We continue our NBA odds series with a Bulls-Heat prediction and pick.
The Heat were 10th in Offensive Rating last season even if they were middle of the pack (17th) in points per game. They’ve made the playoffs in each of Jimmy Butler’s 3 seasons with the team. The Chicago Bulls (0-0) travel south to take on the Miami Heat (0-0) in their first NBA games of the season. The Heat dominated the Bulls in Miami last year. The Heat are a well-oiled machine through and through. 6th Man of the Year winner Tyler Herro (20.7 PPG), Butler (21.4 PPG), and Adebayo (19.1 PPG) carried the load offensively for a team that saw 7 players average at least 10 points per game. The Heat were 4th in total points allowed and held opponents to the 5th lowest field goal percentage and 2nd lowest 3-point percentage. DeRozan was incredible in clutch time last year – helping the Bulls win 65% of their close games in the first half. Look for DeRozan and 4th-year guard Coby White (12.7 PPG) to pick up the slack in LaVine’s absence tonight. They were tied for first in the Eastern Conference at the All-Star Break but fell apart in the second half of the season. In Chicago, the Heat won by 3 and 18. In Miami, the Heat won by 26 and 13.
Chicago's All-Star swingman will miss the season-opener against Miami because of his left knee injury.
He had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in May and is looking forward to playing at full strength. His arrival from Minnesota as part of a 2017 draft-night trade that sent Jimmy Butler to the Timberwolves kicked off a rebuilding effort by the previous management regime of John Paxson and Gar Forman. [The team announced](https://twitter.com/chicagobulls/status/1582786614027161601) that LaVine will miss the game due to left knee injury management, while Shams Charania of The Athletic reports LaVine may also miss Friday’s road game against the Washington Wizards. Wizards, with likelihood the two-time All-Star makes his season debut in Saturday's home opener vs. A two-time All-Star, LaVine averaged 24.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game while shooting 47.6% overall and 38.9% on 3-pointers. Sources: Zach LaVine may also miss Friday's game vs.

The Bulls are already without point guard LaVine, who signed a five-year, $215 million max contract this past offseason, played through lingering soreness in his knee during the second half of the 2021-22 season before undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery in May. "I just feel good," he said then.

NBA odds, picks, and predictions for the Chicago Bulls at Miami Heat on October 19. NBA betting best bet and free pick analysis.
The Bulls did at least play to a league-average pace (14th), but the Heat were notorious for slowing the game down with their third-slowest pace finish last year. The Bulls were also a respectable defensive team prior to Alex Caruso and Lonzo Ball going down with injuries, but ultimately finished 23rd in defensive rating on the season. Reigning Sixth Man of the Year [Tyler Herro](https://www.covers.com/sport/basketball/nba/players/127812/tyler-herro) has a good handful of names ahead of him for this year's award despite being expected to maintain the same role as last year. The total of 216.5 for Wednesday's matchup is the second-lowest of all of the opening games. Miami was also ninth in rebounding rate (50.8%) while Chicago was below average (19th). For example, Nikola Vucevic is someone who typically fills the box score (17.6 ppg, 11.0 rpg) but will struggle against a team like Miami. The Bulls are still without Lonzo Ball and will likely need to lean on second-year point guard Ayo Dosunmu, and were only able to add the aging Andre Drummond to bolster their frontcourt. After being pegged as a fringe playoff team at best, the Chicago Bulls started 26-10 and 39-21 behind sublime play from Demar DeRozan and Zach Lavine. And as they navigated their way through the playoffs, they found themselves in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals down 96-98 with the ball and the shot clock turned off. However, injuries and regression caught up to the re-emerging Bulls and they finished 7-15 to end the regular season before getting bounced 4-1 in the opening round of the playoffs. But despite another year of implied disrespect, the Heat put their heads down and got to work and somewhat quietly finished with the East's top seed. Death, taxes, and the Heat outperforming unreasonably low expectations.

- Oct. While a win would be nice, it’s hard to have your hopes too high when the two best guards on the roster will miss the season opener. This was a huge victory for the Bulls and a thrilling one at that. They just kept battling off Miami’s wave of points in the fourth quarter thanks to some clutch shot making from who else, DeMar DeRozan. He scored 17 points on 50 percent shooting from the field along with four assists and six rebounds and going 3-6 from three. They had 23 assists on their 41 made baskets but struggled to keep the ball at times with 14 turnovers. Coby White struggled in the first half mightily but rebounded to finish with 10 points and two rebounds. Alex Caruso, starting in place of LaVine, had six points but again stuffed the stat sheet with four assists, five rebounds, and two steals. Much was discussed all preseason of his place on the team and whether he’d start at power forward. He led both teams with 37 points on 14 of 22 shooting from the field along with nine assists and six rebounds. He got the line a ton with 11 attempts but uncharacteristically missed three of them. Despite a late Miami rally, the Bulls were able to hang on thanks to the heroics of DeMar DeRozan. This was a game the Bulls didn’t really have a chance to win at the start but they rallied up an amazing effort to pull it off. Vucevic also hit the dagger three with 1:04 left, after missing his first 4 attempts from distance, which sealed the victory for Chicago.
The Bulls start the 2022-23 NBA season 1-0 with a road win over the reigning Eastern Conference No. 1 seed Miami Heat.
He even talked a 10-year veteran in Drummond down from barking at the referees in a crucial spot. The veteran point guard scored 12 points and shot 4-for-4 from 3-point range in his first stint alone, and assisted a gorgeous pick-and-roll alley-oop to Andre Drummond on each's first possession of the game: Although Miami did not pull within eight points in the final five minutes, Donovan did replace Williams with Dragić after Williams mishandled an inbounds pass for a turnover at the 2:08 mark. The first half marked a departure from the preseason Bulls' concerted effort to establish Vučević early and often. In fact, head coach Billy Donovan let the reserves lead the charge from the 2:38 mark of the first quarter, when DeMar DeRozan and Nikola Vučević first checked out of the game, until the 7:11 mark of the second, when DeRozan re-entered, and they held serve. He was typically surgical from the midrange, drawing and-one opportunities on a floater and fallaway jumper, but also made a corner 3 and hammered home this fastbreak dunk. The Bulls' second unit was a point of weakness last season, as they averaged 26.7 bench points per game, 29th in the league. In the first half alone, the Bulls' reserves almost matched that 26.7 number, scoring 25 points on 8-for-17 shooting. Tyler Herro scorched out the gates by making his first three attempts, and the Bulls lost Duncan Robinson and Max Strus for a few open looks in the second quarter as well. By game's end, the Bulls were 13-for-36 (36.1 percent) from 3 to the Heat's 12-for-28 (42.9 percent), which should be considered a win against a Miami team with so many high-caliber marksmen. Alex Caruso slid into the starting lineup in his place, a logical move because of his status as the team’s best and most versatile defender, although it didn't immediately translate as the Heat built as much as a nine-point first quarter lead. The Bulls made 10 of their next 18 3-point attempts, led by Goran Dragić (4-for-4) and Ayo Dosunmu (3-for-4), while the Heat went 3-for-9 in the second quarter.
