Aljamain Sterling came face-to-face one last time at UFC 280 ceremonial weigh-ins ahead of their bantamweight title grudge match.

The Sporting News breaks down the betting lines for the UFC 280 co-main event showdown between TJ Dillashaw and UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling.
There may be a temptation to bet on Sterling to submit Dillashaw at +500, but the former champion has never been submitted in his MMA career. He'll likely make it to the final bell but will have to watch as Sterling has his hand raised in victory. Sterling isn’t a refined striker by any means, but his purpose for striking is to ensure his opponent's hands are always moving and remain open for the takedown. Dillashaw may be a better striker, but Sterling perhaps has the most underrated grappling in the UFC. Dillashaw has won the title on two occasions: a stunning upset against Renan Barao in 2015 and a stoppage of rival Cody Garbrandt in 2017. Aljamain Sterling may be one of the most disrespected champions on the roster.

Former UFC bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw is confident he'll once again have gold around his waist after facing Aljamain Sterling.
Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to fight very much in the last four years and I still hold most of the records in the UFC at bantamweight. It doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be fearful of him but all that aside he’s not that much of a threat.” Sterling entered that bout as a +350 underdog but used his superior wrestling skills to get his Russian opponent to the mat for ground-and-pound and submission attempts. “You’re praising the guy who got caught and saying that he did it the right way and did it like a man. “I know plenty of athletes that pay a little fine and miss a couple games. “Even though I’m 36, I’m able to hold my own and continue to evolve,” he said. “I came back and fought at the Apex, which was cool and an easy way to get back into it but I enjoy this,” he told The Athletic this week. That’s a long time, a long part of my career, especially at the age that I was at. I don’t get it and I think it’s a very odd thing to say.” Dillashaw admitted to the use of the banned substances — which aided him as he cut down to the 125-pound limit to face then-flyweight champion Henry Cejudo in Jan. After serving a two-year suspension following a positive test for recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO), he returned in July 2021 for a fight with Cory Sandhagen at the UFC Apex — with limited fans in attendance. Dillashaw isn’t quite sure what to expect when he makes the walk to the cage on Saturday against Aljamain Sterling at UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi.

Yan has the patience to avoid recklessness and the power to make O'Malley wither. And provided he can hurt Yan enough early to try and activate the former champion's desperate want to avoid a three-fight losing skid, O'Malley just might be able to line him up with the type of explosion which could end the fight. On the ground Makhachev might be able to maul the Brazilian, but he has to be careful for every second to not get caught in a submission. Yan Expect Sterling and Dillashaw to play for points before Sterling eventually gets the takedown and takes over. Yan vs. Perhaps Makhachev presents the answer in the form of a strategic takedown game and stifling top control. Oliveira Oliveira vs. Sterling vs. Dillashaw is back after a year away because of injury and also not too far away from a two-year drug suspension that cost him the title. Elsewhere on the card, bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling looks to continue his incredible run when he takes on former champ TJ Dillashaw in the co-main event.
SportsLine's Kyle Marley reveals his UFC 280 picks and predictions for Charles Oliveira vs. Islam Makhachev in Abu Dhabi.
Dobson (+175) Armen Petrosyan (-200) vs. Dillashaw (+155) Aljamain Sterling (-175) vs. Dillashaw (+155). Muhammad (21-3-1) is known for his nonstop pace that involves a combination of grappling, wrestling and striking. In the co-main event, bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling (-175) defends his title against No. The late-blooming Oliveira (33-8-1) had lost four of six and appeared headed toward journeyman status before he embarked on his current winning streak. Marley also has strong picks for Oliveira vs. This probably comes down to who is having success in the wrestling, and I will side with Muhammad," Marley told SportsLine. Makhachev is a -190 favorite (risk $190 to win $100), while Oliveira comes back at +170 in the latest UFC 280 odds from Caesars Sportsbook. But to become champion he must get past the top-ranked Oliveira, who has won 11 straight fights and has dominated the division since the turn of the decade.

This PPV has so much to offer outside of its world title fights between Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev, and Aljamain Sterling and T.J. Dillashaw.
Whoever emerges victorious in this key lightweight fight could be next in line for the winner of Oliveira-Makhachev. Both are very much flirting with welterweight title considerations: Muhammad is on an eight-fight unbeaten run and Brady has extended his record to 15-0 after five UFC appearances. The UFC can strap a fan-fueled rocket to O'Malley if he beats Yan. He also never lost the title in the cage as he was stripped for missing weight ahead of his clash with Justin Gaethje in May. It will be Sterling's second defense of the 135-pound title and first since his two-fight series with Petr Yan. UFC 280 is the fight fan's pay-per-view.

ET/7 a.m. He’d retain the title against Joe Soto and Barao before dropping it in a close January 2016 decision to Dominick Cruz. This will mark Dillashaw’s first fight since his July 2021 split-decision win over Cory Sandhagen. He retained the title in a rematch with Yan earlier this year at UFC 273. Makhachev comes into this contest on a 10-fight win streak and with just a single loss to his name. While Oliveira submitted Justin Gaethje at UFC 274 in May, it was there that he weighed in a half-pound over the 155-pound limit, losing his championship on the scales.

Sean Zerillo breaks down Saturday afternoon's UFC 280 pay-per-view card, including his analysis, bets and model projections for all 12 fights.
Oliveira to win inside the distance (projected +209, listed +200) is my official pick on the fight. I projected this lightweight fight to end inside the distance 76% of the time (-311 implied) compared to a divisional average of 51%. I would want +179 (35.8% implied) or better to back “Do Bronx” at a 2% edge compared to my projection. 90% of Oliveira’s career fights, including 17 of his past 18 and 10 of the 11 wins on his current streak, have ended inside the distance. I would bet Rosa here, up to about -369 (78.7% implied) at a 2% edge compared to my number. 1 contender to face the winner of Makhachev and Oliveira. He hasn’t fought anyone near this level of competition and may struggle to make the proper adjustments. Chookagian has all the tools to keep this fight competitive and potentially win it. He should have a clear grappling advantage against Muradov, and I expect him to have success landing takedowns. Oezdemir has gotten wobbled more easily in recent fights, so I suspect Krylov may find a chance to finish on the feet against a fighter who is incredibly difficult to take down. Mokaev is a grinding wrestler who can keep a pace and wear on his opponents, but he should have an opportunity to find Gordon’s chin. ET) on ESPN+ and ESPNNews.

On the ground Makhachev might be able to maul the Brazilian, but he has to be careful for every second to not get caught in a submission. Expect Sterling and Dillashaw to play for points before Sterling eventually gets the takedown and takes over. Perhaps Makhachev presents the answer in the form of a strategic takedown game and stifling top control. Yan Yan vs. From a contrast in styles standpoint, Makhachev is the worst type of opponent for him. Oliveira Oliveira vs. Dillashaw is back after a year away because of injury and also not too far away from a two-year drug suspension that cost him the title. Elsewhere on the card, bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling looks to continue his incredible run when he takes on former champ TJ Dillashaw in the co-main event.

“I want to fight the best people in the world and I want to do it as often as I can. Just one fight previously, he took former title contender Dan Hooker to the ground and eventually sunk in a kimura choke to finish him early. “My focus is not the same focus as the UFC,” Dariush said in a press conference this week. “You’re praising the guy who got caught and saying that he did it the right way and did it like a man. The man is deadly in so many different ways, whether on the ground or standup and there’s no reason to think he’s even at his peak yet. The other good news is O’Malley is also more of a striker than a grappler. But I think he made a mistake, and he handled it like a man. Sterling, however, did not care about the bookmakers and used his superior wrestling skills to take down to the mat and keep him there for heavy ground-and-pound. It secured the victory, his second in a row. The referee stepped in to end it at the 4:47 mark for a standing TKO. After a standup war earlier in the bout, Krylov decided to take the fight to the ground in the third round for heavy ground-and-pound. Oliveira, the former division champion, was stripped of his title in May after failing to make weight before a bout with Justin Gaethje.

However, he became the first fighter in UFC history to be stripped of a belt for missing weight when he came in a half-pound overweight for his bout with Justin Gaethje. And that is the end of third round After being handed the title via disqualification against Petr Yan at UFC 259 in March 2021, he barely quieted his critics in eking out a split-decision win over Yan in the rematch at UFC 273 in April 2022. Dariush holds the record of fourth most wins in lightweight division - 15, while Gamrot comes in to this match on a four match win streak. Round 1: Dariush puts in a strong leg hold, Gamrot struggles but gets out of the deadlock after a good 20-25 seconds. Ranked number 1 in women’s flyweight, Chookagian is on a four match winning streak coming into the fight. The crowd is behind Yan now as he lands a string of short but sure punches on O’Malley’s face. The Russian pins Oliveira down with a couple of swift movements but Oliveira puts him on the defensive with a counter hold. Round 2: The Etihad erupts as both Yan and O’Malley exchange powerful jabs to their faces. That is followed by a body hold from Yan and O’Malley breaks it after a short struggle. Sterling on the attack straight away as Dillashaw is pinned down and is in visible pain. But Sterling is on top again, lock after lock and Dillashaw is stumbling hard.

He proved he is one of the most electrifying fighters in the entire UFC. Up next, Sean O'Malley definitely earned himself the chance to get a title shot against the winner of the fight between Sterling and Dillashaw. He did his best and managed to get back up all six times he fell on the ground. Sean O'Malley knew Petr Yan would try to take him down a number of occassions, he needed to remain vigilant and not get bested on the ground. But the former champion, who worked a steady diet of calf and body kicks throughout, then responded to being stunned by a left cross in Round 2 by winding up for a left-hand haymaker of his own seconds later to rock O'Malley. "I was a little surprised [Yan chose to wrestle]," O'Malley said. But I was rocked." In his most recent outing, Oliveira had again turned the tables after an early scare, submitting Justin Gaethje. Makhachev also landed a few punches in the opening frame that seemed to rock Oliveira. If all of the names ahead of Muhammad are booked, don't be surprised if the UFC asks Muhammad to stay active and accept a fight against one of these two. It's a Fight-of-the-Night candidate on paper, and the obvious next move for both, depending how Dillashaw's health is coming off what appeared to be yet another shoulder injury. The difference between two massive wins and two stinging losses comes down to fine details. O'Malley is instantly the biggest fight for him, and the rankings justify it. Whether you agree with the scoring of O'Malley's split decision over Yan or not, there's no doubting he proved himself to be elite. Dariush is so, so, so deserving of a title fight, but even he seems to know it isn't in the cards -- yet. And Volkanovski gets a shot at a second title -- in his home country of Australia.
The UFC handed out four post-fight bonuses after Saturday's card, including one to its new lightweight champion.
Petr Yan via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28)](https://mmajunkie.usatoday.com/2022/10/ufc-280-results-sean-omalley-vs-petr-yan-controversial-decision) [Sean O'Malley](https://mmajunkie.usatoday.com/tag/sean-omalley) (16-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) had to dig deep, but took a split decision from former bantamweight champion [Petr Yan](https://mmajunkie.usatoday.com/tag/petr-yan) (16-4 MMA, 8-3 UFC) for the biggest win of his career. Oliveira was stripped of the title in May when he missed weight for a title fight against Justin Gaethje. But late in the second, Muhammad landed a punch that wobbled Brady, and he took advantage. Oliveira is the UFC’s record holder for career submissions, so Makhachev’s finish was poetic justice. He was a slight underdog against the unbeaten Brady, and the two went back and forth for most of nearly two rounds. Muhammad kept the pressure on and landed punch after punch while Brady backed up.
We knew the lightweight division would have a new champion. Now we know who it is....
Even though Rosa controlled Lansberg for about three-quarters of the first two rounds – not to mention outstriking Lansberg in the third — Lansberg had a flash knockdown in the first to put a draw on the table. The third round saw Borralho with top position for the majority of the round. - The opening round between Nikita Krylov and Volkan Oezdemir sure as hell woke up audiences – whether live or remote – from a slow start, only for the action to slow much in the same manner the rest of the earlier action. The second round saw Muradov with top position for the majority of the round. Petrosyan touched up Dobson over the course of the contest, his volume easily making up for the miniscule control advantage Dobson secured over him in the grappling department. Gordon reversed Mokaev several times, threatening with a couple of subs in the midst of Mokaev’s control-heavy performance. A late takedown in the third round probably secured what was the tightest round up to that point, showing Fiorot has the fight IQ to challenge for the belt. Muhammad was neck and neck with Sean Brady through the halfway mark of the second round, both trading at a high pace. He won the title on a DQ, his first defense was a controversial decision, and now his second defense comes over a very compromised opponent. Makhachev pursued takedowns in the first round, spending a large chunk of the round in the top position, avoiding Oliveira’s submission attempts and dealing out plenty of punches and elbows. I’ve let it be known I’m not fond of double champions as both divisions tend to get hung up, but I’m not the one making those decisions. Oliveira wasn’t broken though, coming out in the second and throwing plenty of hard punches and kicks.

A dominant showing on the ground was punctuated by an arm-triangle choke in the second round, and that was it. Within a few seconds, Dillashaw appeared to dislocate his shoulder, as evidenced by his wincing throughout the first round. From there, the ‘Funk Master’ straight-up mauled the former champion and eventually got the win by ground-and-pound. The main portion of the card began with Manon Fiorot defeating Katlyn Chookagian by unanimous decision. Beneil Dariush dispatched another contender in Mateusz Gamrot, fending off takedowns and connecting with combinations for the unanimous decision. That was the second consecutive win for the cousin of Khabib Nurmagomedov. However, the ‘Punisher’ waited for the perfect opportunity to secure an armbar in the final minute of the fight. The Brazilian was deducted a point for an illegal knee in the second round, but did enough to win on two of three judges’ scorecards. UFC 280 on Saturday was a solid showing. The preliminary portion of the card saw Karol Rosa return to the win column with a majority decision over Lina Länsberg.

This is a wild sport, and Sterling is just riding the wave while simultaneously being an elite fighter. But his process of getting the belt and retaining it has been unorthodox, to say the least. Dillashaw could not defend himself properly, and Sterling did what he had to do: finish the fight dominantly with ground-and-pound. He's honest with himself, and he's fine with the rest of his team being honest with him. He's doing the work and he's doing it smartly.

A lot of that was unnecessary. PROS: Islam established himself as a legitimate superstar. Game plan was smart, doing that after wearing him down by the fence, where his guard was negated When shoulder popped and was one armed & defenseless, it should’ve been stopped. Weirdly enough, while most people thought O’Malley got a moral victory, judges somehow awarded him with the actual victory. After staying on top and matching up his wrestling with Charles Oliveira’s jiujitsu, Makhachev went on to knock him down and submit the top notch grappler.
Makhachev dominated Oliveira from start to finish and ended the fight at 3:16 of the second round with an arm triangle.

He dropped Oliveira with a short counter right hand and then immediately followed him to the floor -- something very few of Oliveira's previous opponents were willing to do, because of his submission threat. He has a similar style to his legendary teammate and mentor, Nurmagomedov. He converted two of three takedown attempts and accumulated more than five minutes of control time in a fight that lasted only 8:16. Volkanovski (25-1) is coming off his fourth title defense in July and has announced his intent to move up in weight. Nurmagomedov's late father, Abdulmanap, who passed away in 2020 due to complications of COVID-19, always envisioned that Nurmagomedov would retire as champion and Makhachev would pick up where he left off. "I just want to say, this is my belt for coach Abdulmanap," Makhachev said.
Makhachev got Oliveira to tap with an arm triangle in the second round to become the undisputed lightweight champion.
The only letdown of the card is that Katlyn Chookagian failed to make weight against Manon Fiorot in her flyweight bout. Dillashaw then returned last summer to defeat Cory Sandhagen in a five-round split decision, and he is set to check in for a wake up call -- one that comes to all fighters -- when Sterling remains a step ahead of him at all times today. Dillashaw will attempt to prove he is the same fighter that he was in 2018 when he successfully defended the belt against Cody Garbrandt. With all due respect to Alexander Volkanovski, the winner of this bout will be the pound-for-pound best in the world. Yan (16-4) has plenty of reasons to be frustrated by the decision, but O’Malley (16-1, 1 NC) put forth impressive rounds in the first and third. The exclamation point came in the third, when Dariush landed a massive left, one that could be heard from Abu Dhabi to Vegas. The most impressive shots took place in the second round, with a left hand from O’Malley that stunned Yan, who responded with a ferocious left. That leaves Oliveira in a tough position, likely needing a victory–potentially against Beneil Dariush–to re-enter the title conversation. Dillashaw (17-5) entered the fight in a compromised position, as his left shoulder kept popping out of its socket. While striking initially appeared to be an advantage for Oliveira, that was never the case in this bout. Nurmagomedov, of course, had a cage-side view for the fight as a part of Makhachev’s corner, and he was extremely animated during the victory celebration. Islam Makhachev forced the greatest finisher in UFC history to tap.

“I probably popped it out about 20 times in training camp… Makhachev capped his ascent to the lightweight throne with a brilliant win by arm triangle choke against Brazilian Oliveira, the holder of the UFC record for submission wins with 16. ABU DHABI – Islam Makhachev pulled off a sensational submission win over Charles Oliveira to win the lightweight title and Aljamain Sterling beat TJ Dillashaw by TKO to claim the bantamweight belt at UFC 280 at the Etihad Arena on Saturday.
The action in Abu Dhabi did not disappoint with a pair of title fights and an incredible bout at bantamweight.
The fight was as dramatic as it was fun to watch as O'Malley weathered the storm of Yan's six takedowns and constant physical pressure to bloody and drop his opponent with a flying knee in Round 3. [O'Malley received the benefit of the doubt](https://www.cbssports.com/mma/news/ufc-280-results-highlights-sean-omalley-takes-split-decision-over-petr-yan-to-earn-likely-title-shot/) from the judges in a split decision win over former champion Petr Yan. O'Malley was lucky to receive the nod and twice during his postfight interview admitted that he wasn't sure he even won and would need to rewatch the tape before commenting on whether he's ready for a title shot. But pushing forward with a fight he was physically unfit to win, even with the courage he showed, makes it that much harder to reward him with a big payday for acting "heroically." [entered the Octagon following Makhachev's victory](https://www.cbssports.com/mma/news/ufc-280-alexander-volkanovski-accepts-islam-makhachevs-challenge-for-lightweight-title-fight-in-australia/) for a staredown meant to hype a potential fight between the two in Australia next year for the 155-pound title. And while it's clear from his apology that he wasn't interested in holding up the sport's deepest division any longer, nobody wins in a scenario such as this. Dillashaw deserved enormous credit for surviving the opening round while Sterling, a ground specialist with suffocatingly long limbs, had his way with him on top and repeatedly took his back. The former two-time bantamweight champion, who was hoping to make history at 36 by challenging Aljamain Sterling, was mysteriously absent during UFC Embedded filming and didn't take part in the public workout. Makhachev cut Oliveira early with a left cross and was never in trouble against a fighter who owns the UFC record for submission and stoppage wins. An early injury to TJ Dillashaw also brought an abrupt end to Aljamain Sterling's second defense of his bantamweight title in the co-main event. Given the ease at which he finished Oliveira, it also isn't out of the question that the larger Makhachev would enter as the betting favorite. Not only did Makhachev step up his striking in a big way against Oliveira, his ability to dominate on the ground and create an opening for an immediate finish was nothing short of Khabib-like.
The expectation from former UFC lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov and his late father, Abdulmanap, was that Khabib would retire from the UFC and shortly ...
From everything we’ve seen from the 29-year-old, I expect he will be improved and out to make a point. Yan won’t get the next title fight, but outside of that, he remains one of the top fighters in the division. By the time Oliveira’s unbeaten run of 11 fights began in 2018, he was already nearly eight years into his UFC career. If Rosa hopes to move forward, she needs to find a better balance between ground control and aggression on the ground. Nikita Krylov: Nikita Krylov might have been too confident in his chin and striking in the early moments of his light heavyweight bout opposite Volkan Oezdemir.
