Of course, there are close to a half dozen other Game of Thrones prequels and spin-offs also in the works right now, and more of those will be arriving in the years to come. Filming is supposed to start in late 2022, and we are…pretty much in late 2022, so that should be soon. - Condal says the narrative of season 1 was deliberately slowed down so we got to know the characters and got invested in them. Once upon a time, the idea was floated that this could turn into a Targaryen anthology series, past Fire and Blood and the Dance of Dragons, and go to different eras in the past and future of the house. So we know season 2 is coming, likely at least a year from now, and with it, another ten episodes. And it’s doing a great job making us forget about that last season of Game of Thrones itself.

Referring to the name for this particular Targaryen civil war that's about to break out, Condal remarks, "I don't know if the Dance of the Dragons will ever have the sprawl that the original Game of Thrones did, simply because of North of the Wall and Esso and all these other places that it went. This leads to a scuffle on dragonback in the skies, resulting in the death of Luke as Aemond's dragon Vhagar delivers the fatal bite. That's the story that we tell in season 2 and beyond." "I'm really interested in picking up with all of those characters that we spent all of this time introducing, particularly Rhaenyra and Alicent's families, and seeing what happens now that we've flipped the chessboard over and spilled the pieces on the ground," Condal continues.

How 'House of the Dragon' fumbled its Season 1 finale (Los Angeles Times)

'The Black Queen' sets up a tantalizing showdown — next season. But the episode's weaknesses reflected shortcuts the writers have taken in this one.

Ten million viewers watched “House of the Dragon” premiere in August, making it the largest in the cable giant’s history. It can’t be easy following in the muddy, blood-soaked footsteps of “Game of Thrones,” and under more scrutiny than the original had at the outset. It artfully compared the battles fought by the royal women of Westeros — giving their lives to give life — with scenes of their men killing for sport in a jousting tournament. Beyond the political and cultural ramifications of his death — a civil war between the Targaryens, years of unrest and tons of material for forthcoming seasons of [the “Game of Thrones” prequel](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/tv/story/2022-08-19/house-of-the-dragon-review-hbo-game-of-thrones) — his demise had little emotion compared to the shock and horror triggered by Ned Stark’s beheading in Season 1 of HBO’s earlier blockbuster. [swap out cast members](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/tv/story/2022-09-25/house-of-the-dragon-hbo-episode-6-flash-forward) seemingly every other episode, making it difficult to become invested in their fates. But it could have been positively explosive if viewers had more time to with the show’s poor sods before they were killed off, or had been able to forge deeper connections with the folks who’ll carry the show to the next season.

Unfortunately, most of the Targaryens are in marriages currently and it would be immoral to produce children outside the bonds of holy matrimony. As of the season 1 finale, viewers have been introduced to [around 10 of them](https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/a-guide-to-every-dragon-in-house-of-the-dragon/) (with some not appearing onscreen yet but can be reasonably assumed to exist offscreen). In fact, given the timeline that House of the Dragon is working with, we could see “Blood and Cheese” as early as episode 1 of season 2. The Dance of the Dragons contains many actual battles and plenty of them should occur in season 2. We’ve only gotten through four of them in season 1 and of the renaming 22, around 13 could be reasonably described as a battle. Now, as of [episodes 9](https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/house-of-the-dragon-episode-9-review-the-green-council/) and [10](https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/house-of-the-dragon-episode-10-review-the-black-queen), the war is finally here and it’s already proven to be a costly one. Most, if not all of the major houses of Westeros will be forced to pick sides in the conflict to come. [an interview with The Hollywood Reporter](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/house-of-the-dragon-matt-smith-daemon-targaryen-crush-1235242470/), writer and executive producer Sara Hess said the next season will explore the relationship between Rhaenyra and Daemon more fully. [a second season](https://www.avclub.com/hbo-renews-house-of-the-dragon-for-season-2-1849461556) was in store since August, although it was always a pretty safe bet that HBO wasn’t going to spend all this money capitalizing on the popularity of Game Of Thrones only call it quits after to air one season. As for the cast, we obviously won’t be seeing Elliot Grihault as Luke again (we’re still not over it), but the rest of the older players will be sticking around, including Tom Glynn-Carney as Aegon II, Ewan Mitchell as Aemond Targaryen, Harry Collett as Jace, Bethany Antonia as Baela, and Phoebe Campbell as Rhaena. Although he hasn’t given an official reason for his departure, co-showrunner Ryan Condal [implied in an interview](https://www.avclub.com/house-of-the-dragon-ryan-condal-miguel-sapochnik-exit-1849580206) that he was just burnt out on the franchise. The kingsguard has been split as well, with three going to Rhaenyra and three sticking with Aegon II. Meanwhile, the Blacks still have a legitimate claim to the throne, plus a Velaryon fleet of ships, at least six dragons left (minus poor Arrax), and one pissed off queen. Rhaenyra’s restraint has hit its limit, and Daemon isn’t the forgiving type. Episodes nine and ten this season presented the two opposite sides as they marshaled their supporters.

10 Questions House of the Dragon Season 2 Needs to Answer (TIME)

The Dance of Dragons has begun. Rhaenyra Targaryen, the rightful heir to the Iron Throne, briefly considered bending the knee to her half-brother King Aegon ...

Of all the families mentioned in the episode, we have a special place in our hearts for the Starks. House of the Dragon has been playing fast and loose with the children’s ages throughout the series, and at this point it’s unclear who is and isn’t considered a grown-up ready to fight. Perhaps he interprets Viserys keeping the secret of the dream from him as a signal that Viserys never trusted Daemon or considered Daemon a possible heir to the throne. In the Season 1 finale, he tells Rhaenyra that Team Black has more dragons than Team Green. He tells her that Aegon the Conquerer subjugated the people of Westeros in part because he had a dream a Targaryen would need to sit on the Iron Throne when a great winter (i.e. And if her children continue to die, is Rhaenyra doomed to the same fate that Daenerys suffered in [Game of Thrones?](https://time.com/6206772/house-of-the-dragon-connects-game-of-thrones/) But in the final episode, we see a fissure between the Queen and her partner. In both cases, the dream serves largely as a plot device to confuse Alicent into believing her son ought to be crowned king and angering Daemon who never learned the secret prophesy from his brother. The Season 1 finale was named “The Black Queen,” and it seems that Rhaenyra is finally ready to take on that title. Early in the season, Viserys warned Rhaenyra that “the idea that we control the dragons is an illusion. Again, this seems largely to be choice on the part of the writers to complicate the character rather than a plot-driven decision. But the death of Rhaenyra’s son Lucerys at the hands of Aegon’s brother Aemond—mistake or not—enraged Rhaenyra and kicked off a civil war that will play out over several seasons.

This in turn leads to an attempt for retaliation from the Greens which will lead to the duel between brothers and twins Rhaenyra's heir, Prince Jacaerys Targaryen (Harry Collett) will once again prove his worth as a future King of the Seven Kingdoms by flying to the Eyrie, and Winterfell (he also flies to Sisterton and White Harbor in the book) on his dragon Vermax and securing the loyalty of these houses for his mother. [Rhaenyra's King-consort](https://collider.com/house-of-the-dragon-valyrian-weddings-explained/) makes his way to the Riverlands on the back of his blood-red dragon Caraxes to claim Harrenhal castle in the name of his wife. Siding with the Blacks are House Arryn of the Eyrie, House Frey of the Crossing, House Greyjoy of the Iron Islands, House Tarly of Horn Hill, House Stark of Winterfell, and [House Velaryon of Driftmark](https://collider.com/house-of-the-dragon-house-velaryon-explained/) - with Lord Corlys to be named Hand of the Queen. In Fire and Blood they make a big move to remedy this, and we should get to see this early in Season 2. [House Hightower](https://collider.com/house-of-the-dragon-house-hightower-explained/) of Old Town, House Baratheon of Storm's End, House Lannister of Casterly Rock, and what remains of House Strong. Season 1 of House of the Dragon served mostly as an introduction to this by featuring the struggles that both King Jaehaerys I (Michael Carter) and Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine) faced to choose their heirs within the previous chapter of Fire and Blood titled "Heirs of the Dragon - A Question of Succession." The war is going to move from the shoring up of alliances to a ruthless bloodbath, and no one will come out of it unscathed. If Season 1 did the work of introducing audiences to the world, the characters, and the issues that they face then that should allow Season 2 to tell a far more detailed and in-depth story. So what can we look forward to seeing in House of the Dragon Season 2?
