The New Orleans Pelicans are headed home undefeated for their first meaningful game in the sold-out Smoothie King Center since last year's playoff run.
Williamson (20.5) and Valanciunas (22.5) have dominated the paint in the first two games. The team posted a 19-22 record in New Orleans last season. Brandon Ingram has been stepping up on the court and has been vocal about some of the national underappreciation in the post-game press conferences. However, the Pelicans are further along in their rebuild, have a better roster, and will get the benefit of a sold-out home crowd. But Zion Williamson and Jonas Valanciunas should again win the rebounding battle, giving the Pelicans a few extra possessions in the SKC. [Zion](https://www.si.com/nba/pelicans) Williamson and [Brandon Ingram](https://www.si.com/nba/pelicans) have passed every test so far and will play their first regular season game together in New Orleans in almost two years. Trey Murphy III, Jose Alvarado, Larry Nance Jr., and Naji Marshall have been mainstays in the reserve rotations. Looking at the other locker room, Utah was expected to be one of the worst teams in the NBA this season. The current roster was built through the trading of stars. Utah’s top two scorers, Jordan Clarkson and Lauri Markkanen, are just good enough to ensure this squad is competitive as long as they remain on the roster. [Pelicans](https://www.si.com/nba/pelicans) (2-0) are headed home to the Smoothie King Center undefeated and will host the also surprisingly undefeated Utah Jazz (2-0). New Orleans knows the blueprint.
The New Orleans Pelicans will try to make it three in a row to start the season tonight at home against the undefeated Utah Jazz.
I think we’ll see some of the easy shots Zion has been missing start to fall tonight and for him to have his first 30 point game of the season. [Zion Williamson has had a relatively quiet start](https://pelicandebrief.com/2022/10/21/zion-williamson-comments-improve/) to the season (for him) but has been picked up by Brandon Ingram and Jonas Valanciunas, who have both been amazing in the first two games. The Jazz have a starting five that can put points on the board and have Collin Sexton coming off the bench, so this one should be a high scoring affair. The Jazz traded away their two best players, but still have a lot of talent, so early reports that they would be The Jazz have no answer for New Orleans on the inside, so expect Valanciunas to have another monster game with Kelly Olynyk trying to stop him and for Zion to feast against Jarred Vanderbilt. The New Orleans Pelicans have looked like one of the best teams in the NBA in their first two games this season, with impressive wins over Brooklyn and Charlotte.
Brandon Ingram is being evaluated for concussion-like symptoms after he suffered a head injury in Sunday's game against the Jazz.
In 11 minutes against Utah, Ingram had 10 points and was 4-of-5 from the field. After being evaluated by the team trainer, Ingram appeared to be fine and even told some teammates on the bench that he was fine. Marshall's hand made contact with Ingram, and on the ensuing possession, the Pelicans called a timeout so Ingram could check himself out of the game.

The Jazz face the Pelicans. Our NBA odds series has our Jazz Pelicans prediction, odds and pick for the first Sunday of the season.
The Jazz are tenacious. The Jazz are not a leading West contender, but they’re going to be much more of a headache than many realized or expected. The Jazz blew the Nuggets out of the water in the first half and cruised to victory in their season opener in Salt Lake City. The Jazz then went to Minnesota and beat the Timberwolves in overtime after blowing a seven-point lead in the final two minutes of regulation. The New Orleans Pelicans have started the season well, looking like a clear playoff team in the West. The Denver Nuggets have a healthier team this season, and the Minnesota Timberwolves added Rudy Gobert in the offseason.
