Big, scary monsters lurk in the lairs of Dragonstone—and this one has quite the backstory.

[in the finale](https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/tv/a41736109/house-of-the-dragon-season-1-finale-recap/), audiences seem to have met Vermithor, a massive beast from the time of Jaehaerys Targaryen's reign, along with Vhagar and Balerion. We won't spoil how each creature plays into House of the Dragon's future, but suffice it to say that wild, untamed dragons who can be claimed by anyone can easily change the tides of war.
'House of the Dragon' Season 1 finale introduces Vermithor, a big new dragon whom Daemon sings to. Who is Vermithor? Who will ride Vermithor?
So is Vermithor the biggest dragon in the world of House of the Dragon? By the time House of the Dragon airs, Balerion is dead and his massive skull is kept as an honorary totem in the Red Keep. Because House of the Dragon makes a big deal of following Daemon as he cozies up to Vermithor, you might be wondering if Daemon will be the massive dragon’s new rider. He was considered to be the third biggest dragon of his age, after Aegon’s Balerion the Dread and Visenya’s dragon Vhagar. Still confused about Daemon’s torch-lit interlude with a mysterious dragon in House of the Dragon Season 1 Episode 10 “The Black Queen”? But the first season finale of House of the Dragon has even more dragon action beyond the chilling moment where Aemond “One Eye” Targaryen ( [Ewan Mitchell](https://decider.com/tag/ewan-mitchell/)) massacres his nephew Lucerys Velaryon ( [Elliot Grihault](https://decider.com/tag/elliot-grihault/)).
Visenya Targaryen took Jaehaerys, his sister, and his mother hostage on Dragonstone, and Maegor soon killed his older brother Aegon in battle. Fortunately, ...
None likely mourned more than Vermithor, who refused to take a rider after Jaehaerys' death and flew to Dragonstone, living in solitude within a lair in the Dragonmont during the reign of King Viserys. As the second-largest and second-oldest living dragon in existence, the Bronze Beast would be an incredibly invaluable asset to Rhaenyra and her supporters. Not a single Dornishmen saw the shores of Cape Wrath, and the conflict was ended without a single loss for the Iron Throne, an accomplishment not even Aegon the Conqueror had accomplished. War was looming in Westeros, and though Vermithor had grown massive by the time Jaehaerys claimed him as a rider, the Bronze Beast was no match for Balerion. Most of Westeros stood behind the Faith, and the stress of holding the realm together caused King Aenys to fall ill and die in 42 AC (After Conquest). Jaehaerys put forward his claim to the Iron Throne, and countless banners flocked to his side in an attempt to overthrow Maegor. Fortunately, Visenya died of natural causes on Dragonstone, and Jaehaerys and his family were able to flee Dragonstone along with their dragons. Maegor took Alys and flew to Pentos atop Balerion the Black Dread, who Maegor had claimed after Aegon the Conquerer's death. While Vermithor and Jaehaerys were both still quite small, the Faith of the Seven rose in rebellion against the Iron Throne in protest of House Targaryen's practice of incestuous marriage. The Conqueror himself would die three years after Jaehaerys was born, leading to the reign of Jaehaerys' father Aenys I Targaryen. Though he may not have been through the War of Conquest like Vhagar, Vermithor still cut his teeth plenty in his time. [House of the Dragon](https://collider.com/tag/house-of-the-dragon/)'s [Season 1 finale](https://collider.com/house-of-the-dragon-season-1-finale-recap-episode-10-the-black-queen/) was jam-packed with dragons, not all of which we've seen before.

Though, as [showrunner Ryan Condal](https://ew.com/tv/house-of-the-dragon-season-finale-luke-velaryon-point-of-no-return/) often refers to the series as setting the record straight on events in Fire and Blood, it's still to be seen how this will all play out. Book spoiler warning: The book tells us that Rhaenyra's son, Prince Jacaerys (played on House of the Dragon by Harry Collett), comes to offer riches, titles, and lands to anyone capable of mounting a dragon in a move to add dragonriders to their ranks. But more importantly for the context of the episode, Vermithor is the dragon once mounted by the benevolent King Jaehaerys I Targaryen (Michael Carter). He has the crown and name of Aegon the Conqueror, the Blackfyre sword, and Viserys' Valyrian steel dagger. The only bigger dragon in Westeros is Vhagar, the she-beast now rode by Aegon's brother Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) for the Greens. There are a number of rider-less dragons dwelling on House Targaryen's ancestral island in Westeros, and if they can tame them, the Blacks would have a bigger advantage against the Greens.

House of the Dragon series finale 'The Black Queen' finds the Targaryens and the Hightowers on the brink of a civil war.
The death of Lucerys at the hands of Aemond is what prompts the Dance of Dragons – the name given to the Targaryen/Hightower civil war – to begin in earnest. [ the book that House of the Dragon is based on](/culture/television/house-of-the-dragon-george-rr-martin-books-fantasy-series-based-else-he-written-3813847) – written as a series of overlapping, and often contradictory, historical accounts – suggests that Aemond killed Lucerys deliberately. If Daemon has bonded with Vermithor, he’ll perhaps now be able to fight Vhagar – the large dragon bonded to Aemond. (Rhaenyra, for her part, refused, not wanting to be “Queen of ash and bone”.) He suggests multiple times going to claim the wild dragons, who live free with no associated rider – which is what it appears he’s done here. Vhagar is much larger than Lucery’s dragon, and kills them both with ease – and the realisation dawns on Aemond exactly what the significance of this will be. It’s a war that Series 2 – currently expected in early 2024 – will likely chart in earnest, with the series ending on Rhaenyra’s determined fury.
