Aemond is House of the Dragon's most tragic character, and best ... (Polygon)

What did the sapphire-eyed Aemond say to Vhagar in House of the Dragon season 1 finale? Enough to kill Lucerys Targaryen, and really kick off the Dance of ...

[Daemon found that power](https://www.polygon.com/23343681/daemon-house-dragon-maegor-westeros-history-martin-explained) in his penchant for violence and the strength of his dragon, and because Aemond seems to have modeled his life after his uncle, that’s where tries to find it too. [House of the Dragon’s Aemond Targaryen](https://www.polygon.com/23368925/house-dragon-kids-who-rhaenyra-alicent-daemon-jace-joffrey-aegon) comes in somewhere in between these two extremes. These monstrous characters are the opposite of the schemers in that they have power and they recognize it, but they have no ambitions beyond cruelty. It’s a tragic accident at the hands of a teenager who, after a lifetime of being bullied, didn’t understand how the stakes had changed. After a lifetime of feeling inferior — including during the crowning of his own unworthy brother as king — Aemond now wields the power to end lives and start wars. But for Aemond, this is also a chance for revenge — an eye for an eye. Aemond pulled Daemon’s princely bluster, cleverness, and haughty pride, but he ended up with the also-ran inferiority that drives Daemon’s more destructive impulses. [A Song of Ice and Fire](https://www.polygon.com/23399493/house-dragon-game-thrones-endings-timeline) has never lacked for compelling villains. The stories of the series’ best schemers, like Littlefinger or Varys, are almost revenge tales, as they grasp for power that they, in their minds, deserve, but from which they’ve been unjustly deprived by the world. A Song of Ice and Fire is a series that rarely trades in pure villainy, at least among its most prominent cast. [House of the Dragon](https://www.polygon.com/house-of-the-dragon) adds great characters to the series’ legacy on both fronts. But its most interesting addition is [Aemond Targaryen](https://www.polygon.com/23379127/house-dragon-kids-are-screwed), whose mix of cleverness, impulsiveness, and a sapphire eye makes the show’s version of him one of A Song of Ice and Fire’s best and most tragic characters.

What's Underneath Aemond's Eye Patch in 'House of the Dragon'? (esquire.com)

House of the Dragon's season finale ended with a brutal fight between Lucerys Velaryon and his uncle, Aemond Targaryen. In some ways, it had been a long ...

As George RR Martin explains in Fire and Blood, the book which House of the Dragon draws on, Aemond reveals the scars that remain from his maiming along with the fact that he’s replaced his old, crap, human eyeball with a sapphire. That represents Aemond (his brother Aegon and sister Helaena have the figure of a woman and a spider respectively). The opening titles to the penultimate episode of House of the Dragon gave us a big pointer to where the finale would go and how Aemond intended to make his mark.

The thing that George is laughing at on the side is how anybody can read Fire & Blood and think that this is the one true official account of anything. And we’re expected to take the one true history out of this book? Most of the show’s major changes are in that safe zone, where they may change how we view characters but shouldn’t have much effect on the overarching narrative. “We’re trying to make this as much like a real history is possible, and history is messy,” Condal said. “The pieces for the Dance of the Dragons were put into place a long time ago. However, one pattern the show has developed is pulling its punches a bit in terms of its character motivations. This is the first major casualty in the Dance of the Dragons. [Laenor Velaryon rowed off into the sunset](https://winteriscoming.net/2022/10/10/how-laenor-velaryon-could-return-on-house-of-the-dragon/) instead of meeting an untimely demise. Aemond will still most likely get a reputation as a kinslayer, and will have to I mean, Aemond got on his giant dragon and chased his nephew on his much smaller dragon through the clouds screaming and yelling at him, incensing his dragon and starting a fight. Neither Aemond nor Lucerys got to tell their side of the stories directly. Historians have told us that Aemond intended to kill Luke, but I don’t think any of them could purport to know what was going on in Aemond’s head at the time.

It would be interesting if one of the ways the two diverge, is by getting some backstory in the second season regarding the blue sapphire. Lucerys represents the fire side, with Rhaenyra being the heir and the sole Targaryen who knows the prophecy and Aemond’s blue sapphire represents the ice side. What is the significance of the blue sapphire? As he was confronted by the group, and as he was receiving better training from Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel), he easily bested the boys in combat. [House of the Dragon](https://wegotthiscovered.com/tag/house-of-the-dragon/)’s first season has landed on [HBO Max](https://wegotthiscovered.com/tag/hbo-max/). In case you have forgotten, Aemond needs to wear an eye patch because of his actions on Driftmark in episode seven of the season — “Driftmark”— after Lady Laena Velaryon’s funeral.

House of the Dragon: That Aemond and Vhagar Change Was a ... (Den of Geek US)

To call it David versus Goliath would be an understatement. When the mighty and ancient Vhagar, ridden by Prince Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), flew above young Prince ...

Let the characters own their actions, and if it reveals them to be villains, then the show is stronger for it because Aemond’s motivations for villainy come from a completely understandable place. But characters should be in control of their actions, and the choices to tear asunder the family that old King Viserys attempted to keep together during a fateful feast should not be treated as sitcom plotting. The hypocrisy of the character is cornerstone to who she is; it is her tragedy that she will use her children as political tools, just as her father did her. At the moment this problem is not a dealbreaker, either for the series or what was otherwise a compelling season finale. For in the seires, it turned out to not be murder at all when Aemond led his dragon to the beheading of Arrax; it was bullying game gone awry—a mistake and misunderstanding that forces the realm into war. Aemond never has, and so when the opportunity to murder the target of his fury arises, he takes it with callous disregard of the consequences. In the book, Aemond Targaryen knew exactly what he was doing when he sought Lord Baratheon’s leave to chase his nephew to the skies with the largest dragon in the world—even as the book is a historical text (so technically no one was up there but the two Targaryens), Aemond never makes excuses or begs pardon for a bit of horseplay. It also reminds us of a chilling truth that King Viserys (Paddy Considine) said in the show’s first episode. Poor sweet Luke has gone to see his father, and in the aftermath, any hopes of this simply being a war of words and alliance-building has vanished. [last night’s episode](https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/house-of-the-dragon-episode-10-review-the-black-queen/), “The Black Queen,” the changes made to Aemond’s murder of Lucerys had the opposite effect. To quote Martin in the corresponding chapter, “Then the storm broke, and the dragons danced.” Luke and Arrax valiantly strafed and soared, zigged and zagged, but in the end it was inevitable that Lucerys would find a new home in Vhagar’s belly.

One only needs to see the look on her face at the end of the episode to get their answer. So will the death of Lucerys at the hand of Aemond change her mind? For a moment, it looked like Lucerys and Arrax had escaped, breaking above the thunder and lightning to a peaceful sky. Sure, viewers should be used to this kind of loss after all the mess Game of Thrones subjected them to. The memes about this pivotal House of the Dragon moment make it clear this scene will stick with fans for all the dark nights ahead. The Season 1 finale saw Aemond and Lucerys both turn up in Storm’s End to persuade Lord Borros Baratheon to swear loyalty to their respective parties (the Greens for Aemond; the Blacks for Lucerys).
