Ticket to Paradise review — a trifle unworthy of its stars (Little White Lies)

George Clooney and Julia Roberts take to Bali in a hollow-hearted reminder of why the modern romcom is in decline.

[Ol Parker](https://lwlies.com/related-tags/ol-parker/) (as in his [Best Exotic Marigold Hotel](https://lwlies.com/reviews/the-second-best-exotic-marigold-hotel/) duology, the consistency is that of a before-bed bowl of tapioca pudding) shoots for the middle, and the numbing results expose the root of the problem as a dearth of the good material that mints screen idols of the first order. Nor is there any trace of the passion that must have once burned between them, the emotional crux of the film — the shot in which she looks at him and sees the man she used to love — drawing on a sentimental association with ER by showing Clooney goofing around with some kids. Sounds like the basis for screwball gold pitched squarely in the “comedy of remarriage” tradition, except that their quarreling is all hollow on the inside, none of the snippy half-witticisms volleyed between Clooney and Roberts informed by any animus real enough to split the pair up. But watching Ticket to Paradise, a paid vacation to Bali sold as a low-effort trifle for middle-aged couples afforded a few hours of freedom by the babysitter, it seems like the real issue lies in the failure to cultivate human resources. Gazing upon such wonders of the natural world as his eye crinkles or her open-mouthed laugh, the first instinct may be to assume that Hollywood hasn’t found any worthy successors because they’re not out there, the zero-body-fat action figures interchangeably peopling today’s IP swill not up to the job. There are societal and economic factors to consider, pertaining to the collapse of mid-budget studio filmmaking and the according shift in audience tastes that’s created a feedback loop of demotivation for their development.

George Clooney & Julia Roberts Make a Phenomenal Pair in 'Ticket ... (PureWow)

'Ticket to Paradise', starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts, has critics talking, but is it worth the watch? Keep reading for an honest review.

Even with the predictable plot, fans are in for a fun escape (and plenty of stunning views). (No offense, but the chemistry between Lily and Gede isn’t nearly as interesting as that of David and Georgia.) As for the rest of the cast, there’s very little character development, which makes it challenging to really connect with the others. But her divorced parents (played by [Julia Roberts](https://www.purewow.com/news/julia-roberts-hot-pink-gown-ticket-to-paradise-premiere) and [George Clooney](https://www.purewow.com/news/george-amal-clooney-sheer-jumpsuit)) are stunned to learn that she is giving up her career to marry a seaweed farmer that she met a only few weeks ago. But even with gorgeous views and great performances from Roberts and Clooney, the movie—unfortunately—falls a bit flat due to its extremely predictable plot and forgettable characters. One look at the stunning, scenic beaches will help you understand why Lily would ditch her city job for a life with the charming Gede (Maxime Bouttier) in this lush paradise. [Sandra Bullock](https://www.purewow.com/entertainment/sandra-bullock-net-worth)'s [The Lost City](http://Sandra Bullock & Channing Tatum Try to Survive the Jungle in ...https://www.purewow.com › the-lost-city-trailer) to [Jennifer Lopez](https://www.purewow.com/entertainment/in-defense-of-jennifer-lopez)'s [Marry Me](https://www.purewow.com/news/jennifer-lopez-marry-me-teaser), it seems like we're living in the age of cheesy, breezy rom-coms. And while most of their shared scenes aren’t exactly laugh-out-loud funny, the snide remarks and banter will make definitely make you chuckle. First off, the chemistry between Roberts and Clooney is fantastic. At first glance, the film is essentially a formulaic romance with a few laughs and some stunning scenery. [Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again!](https://www.purewow.com/news/amanda-seyfried-ran-into-on-screen-dads-pierce-brosnan-hugh-jackman)), Ticket to Paradise follows a law school graduate named Lily (played by Kaitlyn Dever), who heads off to Bali for a much-needed vacation before starting her big job at a prestigious firm. So, it comes as no surprise that yet another rom-com, [Ticket to Paradise](https://www.purewow.com/entertainment/julia-roberts-george-clooney-ticket-to-paradise-trailer), has been added to Hollywood's ever-growing list.

Ultimately, “Ticket to Paradise” never takes flight. “Ticket to Paradise” worked best when the movie did not take itself too seriously. A comedy wants to keep an audience laughing, which is easier to do over 90 minutes than it is in two hours. While sequences in “Ticket to Paradise” are somewhat comedically written, it is Roberts and Clooney that elevate the moments beyond what is on the page. With not one, but two A-list leads in George Clooney and Julia Roberts, the Bali-based film seeks to bring the mid-budget romantic comedy back to theaters. The pair have been in several films together over the years, most notably the esteemed heist film “Ocean’s Eleven.” As in that 2001 film, the pair have incredible on-screen chemistry.

The 10 Best Quotes In Ticket To Paradise (Screen Rant)

The witty and sarcastic remarks come back in full force as George Clooney and Julia Roberts reunite in the romantic comedy Ticket to Paradise.

Georgia claims, “The last time David was ever helpful was the night we made Lily,” showing her complete disdain for her ex-husband and his actions during their marriage. He asks if they did anything and Georgia claims, “There’s not enough alcohol in the world.” It foreshadows how Georgia and David react upon seeing each other on the plane and should be a sign the wedding wasn’t going to go as smoothly as Lily hoped. Georgia, Lily, and Gede are swimming in the ocean, but David is concerned about sharks. Georgia is trying to explain to Beth-Ann during their flight why the duo is going to Bali and how she wants to prevent Lily from making the same mistake she did marrying David, but David cuts her off mid-sentence. What she doesn’t know is that Georgia and David have called a truce because their desire to break up Lily and Gede trumps their feelings toward each other. When the drinks start flowing and the music is pumping “age appropriate” tunes as requested by Wrenn, the two begin letting loose. It also shows how she expected her parents to act toward one another and is surprised by the turn of events. When Lily asks her mom to promise to not argue or say mean things to David, she requests Georgia to not be passive-aggressive. Georgia clearly knows what her ex-husband is like, asking, “You’re still doing the Italian tourist bit?” Unfortunately for Beth-Ann, she cannot get away from the former couple and must listen to them bickering for the entire flight. When the flight attendant interrupts to ask if anyone would like champagne, Beth-Ann is quick to claim a glass with Georgia after her and David wanting the full bottle. After not doing a romantic comedy in over 20 years, Ticket to Paradise brings the charm and hilarity fans will recognize from her previous rom-coms.

Ticket to Paradise is undoubtedly the most easy-going and lighthearted film Julia and George have made together. Since Brisbane and the Gold Coast are a few gorgeous places in Australia that replicate the visual aesthetic of Bali, it made sense to film the movie there. As many know, this isn’t the first time Julia and George have linked up to film a movie together. In reality, it wasn’t possible for production to actually shoot the movie there. As the movie progresses, both individuals realize that their feelings for each other might be rekindling in the midst of their joint sabotage plan. The romantic movie focuses on an ex-couple who must travel to an exotic location to intervene in their daughter's relationship.

10 Funniest Quotes From Ticket To Paradise (Screen Rant)

Julia Roberts and George Clooney reunite on the big screen, to bring a romcom full of funny quotes.

Her hangover had gotten the better of her, and she wasn't prepared for a proposal. His quote is one of the funniest because he didn't even want to get in the sea in the first place. Towards the end of the movie, Wren encourages her friend to be careful with her new husband, stating how she's not quite ready to be an aunt to any children. The group decides to take a trip out to sea, with the prospect of getting in the clear water. A heavy night of drinking left Georgia feeling the effects the next morning. She feels like she is witnessing the most awkward moment in the world and the only thing that could change it would be an asteroid. Her extreme wish is also a superbly funny contrast to Wren's joy. [movie that could make you want to travel the world](https://screenrant.com/movies-that-inspire-life-changes-travel/). When David claims that Georgia did "sleep karate" whilst they were together, she pointed out that the sleep was just a guise for her attacking him. Before realizing he would be seated near Georgia, David meets a stranger on the plane, whom he doesn't want to talk to. It outs his unwillingness to engage with the seemingly nice passenger, which he probably would've wanted to keep up the whole time. Unknowingly, they are booked on the same flight and in seats next to each other.
