Here's everything you need to know as Vasiliy Lomachenko returns from a long layoff to face Jamaine Ortiz.
Here’s more info on the Vasiliy Lomachenko vs. Say, Lomachenko by TKO in the seventh round. There’s been talk ever since the Lopez fight that Lomachenko is beginning to slip. Lomachenko will be the best fighter he’s ever faced, but in Ortiz’s last four fights, his opponents’ combined record is 64-6-2. Lomachenko is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and almost certainly a first-ballot Boxing Hall of Famer. For me, I don’t mind Lomachenko to win by stoppage at -125, but I’d like it a little bit more by going with Lomachenko by stoppage in rounds 7-12 at +160. “My goal is to win the undisputed lightweight title, but I will not take Jamaine Ortiz lightly.” I go back to the basics and fundamentals and try to master those skills. That’s because Lomachenko took time away from his sport to help defend his native Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion. Ben Fowlkes breaks down Saturday's Boxing matchup between Vasiliy Lomachenko and Jamaine Ortiz at Madison Square Garden.
The -135 line from DraftKings on Lomachenko via KO, TKO, or DQ looks like the safest play to me. He has to slow down the forward movement of Lomachenko one way or another, but he probably can’t rely on power alone to do it. One variable that’s difficult to predict is just how badly Lomachenko wants a finish in this fight. For another, there’s always the chance that Lomachenko could underestimate the +1100 underdog Ortiz at his own peril, especially since he already seems to be eyeing a meeting with someone like Devin Haney on the back of an impressive win here. At times it seems as if the man simply materializes next to opponents with a clear, unobstructed view of their jawlines. Then again, Ortiz is likely hoping that an upset victory here would earn him the same reward.

This was another where Loma was a bit more effective and should secure the round. It feels like Loma’s shots are landing a bit bigger even if he’s not hitting at near the rate we’re accustomed to. He mixed in a couple solid uppercuts as well to take this one. We didn’t see a ton of big punches this round. The tide appears to be turning for Lomachenko. Ortiz has some swelling under his left eye after taking some tough shots from Loma. Another busy round for Ortiz. Loma stopped him a couple times, but Ortiz’s combination of keeping busy and landing some good shots is allowing him to pick up rounds. Ortiz nearly tripped over his own feet after a big shot, but even without that stumble, Loma did enough to win his first round. He didn’t land many punches in the first half of the round, but he kept busy and started to land more punches in the second half of the round. Ortiz is 16-0-1 and looking to build off a notable decision win over Jamel Herring.
