Kawhi Leonard and Paul George return for the Clippers, who edge the Hornets with second unit providing a critical rally to begin a four-game trip.
Charlotte had Los Angeles on ropes in the fourth quarter, but poor rebounding led to another loss for coach Steve Clifford's embattled team.
“With the roster we have here presently right now, we need to have at least two starters in the game. “If you have a great team, sometimes you can play with only one starter in the game,” Clifford said. What it does show (is) we don’t have the buy-in necessary and we don’t have natural defensive rebounders, so there has to be a change. It’s all effort, I think we’ve all been leaking out a little bit too much, so we’ve just got to make sure we stay in and make tough effort plays.” It stems from all their injuries and what Clifford has to work with. “It’s been the same story a couple of nights. A stinging 119-117 loss to the LA Clippers could have been averted had the Hornets swiped a rebound with just under 40 seconds remaining. We get this one rebound and we secure possession of the ball and the game is in our hands, instead of giving this team — a great team — a second opportunity to put in a miss that was a good look.” You can’t be doing blockout drills to me or anything like that and nor do you have to. Although the final numbers don’t tell the full story, those rebounding woes were prevalent once again and the Clippers took advantage of their height disparity inside with Ivica Zubac and Terrance Mann. That’s the game.” But there they were and the Hornets had them thinking this may be their night — until things unraveled in the waning seconds in part because they couldn’t corral a loose ball.
It was by no means smooth sailing, but a big first-half display from Paul George and a big fourth quarter from Kawhi Leonard were welcome sights in the win.
The Clippers were outscored 36-21 in the third quarter and suddenly the worst facet of having your top guys miss that much time came to the fore. It seemed that the return of that star quality was helping their teammates too, with Reggie Jackson, Marcus Morris Sr. It was George who, of the three, made the fastest possible start, finishing the first half with 12 points and 7 assists.

We do know that they're going to need Leonard to be healthy and productive if they're going to reach their ceiling as a team so, hopefully, he can remain out on the floor as the season wears on. Leonard's clutch-ness proved to be the story of the game, though, and you can see both of his late buckets below: With the Clippers trailing 117-115 and only 45 seconds remaining on the clock in Charlotte, Leonard made two consecutive baskets to lift L.A.
