A silver lining for Chicago was the play of small forward [DeMar DeRozan](https://www.cbssports.com/nba/players/playerpage/1685250), who almost posted a triple-double on 34 points, 13 boards, and eight dimes. Meanwhile, Chicago fought the good fight in their overtime contest against the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result, falling 123-122. After a few days' rest for both teams, the New York Knicks and the Chicago Bulls will meet up at 7:30 p.m.
The Bulls (11-15) return home after dropping a heartbreaking overtime thriller to the Hawks, 123-122 in Atlanta on Sunday. Tonight Chicago hosts th...
Caruso, who ranks fourth in the NBA in deflections per game (3.8), third in total deflections (96), and is tied for 11th in total steals (38), will be a welcome addition to Chicago’s lineup. The days of standing around and watching DeRozan/LaVine attempt to save the day must end. Everyone in a Bulls uniform must become an active threat while in the game at both ends of the floor. As a collective unit, the Bulls can’t continue to rely solely on DeRozan and/or Zach LaVine, the team’s top two scorers, to don a Superman cape and go one on five as the game clock ticks down to zero. The team’s ability to end up as the last one standing in these situations, especially after last year’s impressive 25-16 (.610) record is not only frustrating, but troubling, especially since this season is already past the quarter-pole mark. Chicago, meanwhile, is 5-5 over its last ten games and are in the 11th position in the conference standings.
Thib and D-Rose (okay, okay, and Ryan Arcidiacono) return to the UC.
The Knicks are in many ways a typically Thibs-ian team at present, with an old-school shot profile and a surprisingly robust defense. Would I rather have rim-rolling, hyper-athletic Mitchell Robinson, even with his lengthy injury history, than Nikola Vucevic manning the middle for Chicago? The Knicks also have depth at center. Brunson and Julius Randle (who’s having a sneaky-good, semi-comeback season) are the Knicks’ most formidable scoring threats. Non-DDR Bulls being [less-than-clutch](https://www.blogabull.com/2022/12/13/23507509/the-bulls-have-been-bad-in-the-clutch-and-zach-lavine-is-leading-that-problem) sure didn’t help matters much, either. Chicago will play New York three times over the next 10 days, today’s and Friday’s game being at home.
Here's everything you need to know before the Chicago Bulls take on the New York Knicks in their 27th game of the 2022-23 regular season.
- Dec. That being said, Chicago’s solid 7-5 record at home and increasing levels of desperation to save the season have me leaning with the Bulls here — if only ever so slightly. Before Alex Caruso went down with a brief injury, he earned a temporary bump up into the starting lineup. Gambling odds and information courtesy of FanDuel. This is precisely why winning against the visiting Knicks will be crucial toward leveraging long-term success and making a genuine run at the playoffs. Fortunately, things should lighten up here soon, beginning with a pair of home games against the middling New York Knicks.

Two other factors here: the Knicks have slowed things down considerably and are a Bottom-10 team in pace during this successful stretch. Zach LaVine has been up and down this year, and the Knicks will likely throw aggressive looks at him and force him into bad shots. For the season, Chicago's offense has been disappointing (110.7 offensive rating, 19th highest in the NBA). I'm banking on the hot team to do so. The Knicks' defense has been dominant lately, pressuring offenses into bad shots and turnovers. The Knicks are traveling on the road in this one, but they've fared well with an 8-5 ATS record away from Madison Square Garden. The Bulls being favorites tonight is odd, as the Knicks are playing exceptionally well lately, with incredible defense and Julius Randle finding his groove. The Bulls don't have anyone who might suggest they can slow him down significantly. Alex Caruso will likely be back in the lineup, which is a positive, but he's been banged up of late. His numbers are down across the board and tonight's matchup likely won't see him return to his dominant ways. They've allowed just 7.5 made threes per contest, tops in the NBA over that span. They lead the league in defensive rating by 5.8 points over that four-game span.
In OT, the Bulls offense crashed, scoring just three points. Meanwhile the Knicks just kept hitting threes: Quentin Grimes hit a huge one off Randle penetration ...
It’s tough to watch but there’s no pretending around it now in the fact that the Bulls don’t look like a playoff team at the moment. While his jump shot numbers need improvement, and he once again had a brutal turnover in overtime, it’s clear that LaVine has his burst back and it’s aiding him a ton when attacking the hoop. As a team, the Bulls did certain things well, including great shooting from 2 point range and forced 15 turnovers by the Knicks. The Knicks overall were a scorching 18 of 34 from the three point line. However, the Bulls couldn’t replicate what the Hawks did to them earlier this week as a .7 second play designed as a Patrick Williams lob attempt at the rim clanked off the backboard. Down the stretch in regulation, the Bulls made several defensive stops including forcing a shot clock violation in the Knicks last try.

New York shot 52.9 percent from beyond the arc and hauled in 48 rebounds compared to Chicago's 31 rebounds. With the game tied at 117 after four quarters, the Bulls managed to score just three points in overtime. The Bulls and Knicks will meet again on Friday for a rematch before Chicago travels to face the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday.
