Your cat is probably more attached to you than you think (Popular Science)

Cats might seem like solitary creatures, but studies show they form attachments with their caregivers, similar to dogs and even young humans.

Check back [on PopSci+](https://www.popsci.com/popsci-plus/) in February for the next article. They presented adult cats—pets as well as potential adoptees at a shelter—with a choice of how to spend their time. The theory, originally developed in the 1970s by psychiatrist John Bowlby, [describes the types of relationships that young humans form](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4085672/) with their guardians. Some retreated to a corner of the room; others crawled up into a lap and stayed put. About one-third of the them, however, either avoided the human or snuggled up and stayed there, unwilling to wander on their own. “Common misconceptions that cats need less social interaction, or are more independent, can impact both the amount and quality of social interactions we offer cats,” Udell says. It didn’t occur to me that interaction mattered as much to them as it did to me. [Secure Base Test](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0168159118305616). When their person returned, most of the kittens sought them out for a rub and perhaps a kind word, then proceeded to explore. [ warm and affectionate cats can be](https://www.popsci.com/cats-bonds-humans-attachment-pets/). Capable of friendship with their human, but not requiring it, and rarely as much as a dog. We matter to cats even more than we think, and our assumptions about their character can easily become self-fulfilling prophecies.

Every day, a number of animals are euthanized in shelters in San Diego County. That, of course, includes cats, and that fact haunted Renee Shamloo.

A chalkboard in the corner of the lounge spells it out. There is a fee of $20 for adults, $10 for kids and seniors. so that’s where the Cat Lounge came from and yeah, this is it now,” Shamloo said. The Best Modern Cat Furniture That Actually Looks Good in Your ... (gearpatrol.com)

One of the great challenges faced by cat owners — outside of keeping the little devils from knocking every knickknack off of our desks every chance they get ...

While Nala tends to be skeptical of new furniture, our tester notes that the cat took to the tree within 30 minutes, making herself at home in the top basket and claiming it as her favorite spot in the home over the course of the next month. The Ciriaca Condo features a sleek modern design with solid wood legs and neutral colors, and combines a bottom drawer with an open shelf for your cat to lounge on. She considers it a great option for those looking for a multi-functional piece of cat furniture, but just be aware that the pads in the Uni's beds do slide around quite a bit. Scratching posts tend to be some of the ugliest cat furniture of all, as it's tough to disguise their purpose — especially once your cat tears them to shreds. But Meyou Paris has done an outstanding job with their "The Vegas" scratching post, as it looks more like a work of art than something meant for your cat to sharpen its claws on. Our tester picked out these shelves from The Refined Feline specifically because she lives in a studio apartment where space is at a premium, and since they mount to your wall, they kept her from having to sacrifice any floor space for a piece of cat furniture. Even if your cat doesn't hang out on it, it can still be used to house their toys, and the tall version could even function as a makeshift end table. The futuristic orb looks like something out of the imagined future of the 1960s, and I couldn't wait for my cat to start hanging out in it. Our tester was personally blown away by the quality of the Grove, calling it "by far the highest-quality piece of cat furniture I've ever owned." Unfortunately, his cat didn't feel the same way, as he noted that his feline friend prefers to hang out in a cardboard box over his expensive tower. These days, there are a number of brands putting out modern cat furniture that will not only be loved by your cat but will actually look great in your home too. Have a look below at the best modern cat furniture and see just how chic feline furniture has become.

While the cafes in Japan were mostly for “visiting,” Europe took a humanitarian turn and began working with local shelters and animal welfare organizations to offer places for rescued cats to live or be adopted into forever homes. Caitlin was determined to give these cats “the sanctuary they deserve, and humans the kind of retreat they didn’t even know existed.” Papa’s houses FeLV negative cats, too, (in separate quarters) and by their third anniversary in 2021 they had found homes for 420 cats. The idea was simple: offer the residents of this crowded city, living in tiny apartments that didn’t allow pets, a place to just come and be with cats, to “provide relaxing companionship in what otherwise is stressful, urban life” (otherwise known as a cat fix). In Europe, cafes sprung up in the Netherlands, Hungary, Poland, Italy, England, France, Austria and Madrid, Spain, where they teach animal care classes and host flea markets, and yoga with cats, according to ConfettiTravel.com. Thus describes my first visit to the Catopia cat cafe in Albuquerque.

"We have policies like this where everybody just makes the assumption that every single breeder that a pet store works with looks like the ones you see on TV that are filthy and the [dogs] are dying, and that just simply isn't the case," Emilio Ortiz, the manager of the New York pet store CitiPups, "We are hopeful that this enormous step by New York State may encourage other states to take similar action to stop the cruel commercial breeding industry from supplying pet stores within their borders," Matt Bershadker, the president and CEO of the ASPCA, said in a statement. [report released this year](https://www.aspca.org/sites/default/files/asp006_r6_ar01_003-r1.pdf) by the ASPCA found that 1 out of 4 of puppies shipped to New York state pet stores came from dog brokers who buy puppies from licensed and unregulated breeders and resell the animals to stores.
