If the first Avatar film seemed brazenly futuristic—a technologically audacious blockbuster that spoke (some) truth to power—its sequel seems mired in the past, with ideas no less retrograde. The issue with The Way of Water is that its brand of historical retelling doesn’t require anything of its presumed audience besides self-flagellation. Over this bucolic scene, the reformed Marine colonizer offers a piece of insight gleaned from his new culture: “Happiness is simple.” Throughout, the dialogue bristles with grave, pseudo-mystical catchphrases like this, meant to capture the ecological wisdom of the Na’vi. More importantly, representations of Indigenous life that traffic in the “original environmentalist” fable often serve to reify an image of Native Americans that is implicitly racist and explicitly condescending. If the ecological Indian leaves his land unchanged, the myth implies, it is because he lacks the knowledge to change it. The ecological Indian is at once a cypher for American self-loathing—a foil that lets us declaim our dominant culture’s environmental predations—and a justification for white, Western hegemony. The Natives may be morally superior to their oppressors by dint of their ecological prudence, but that very prudence is taken as paradoxical proof of their racial inferiority. Usually, images of the ecological Indian portray historical Native Americans—historical because Natives are [almost always consigned to history](https://pluralism.org/myth-of-the-vanishing-indian)—as having had a singular, nearly mystical connection to the natural world. Theirs was a worldview that prioritized “balance,” that was not wasteful—they “used the whole buffalo!”—and that never polluted. The problem, at least as Krech saw it, was that the myth isn’t terribly accurate: North American Indigenous communities held (and hold) a diversity of ecological attitudes, not all of which we would label straightforwardly environmentalist.

We find out that the aquatic, four-eyed sea creature, whose name is Pakayan, has been exiled from his pod because he led a group of young Tulkun to their deaths while trying to take revenge on the humans who had killed Pakayan’s mother. Early on in The Way of Water it is revealed that the late Colonel Miles Quaritch fathered a baby son before getting two arrows to the chest in movie one. At the end of Avatar, the Na’vi gather round the Tree of Souls in the hope that Eywa will transfer the dying Grace’s consciousness to her avatar body (as it later does for Jake Sully). By my count, there were at least three separate occasions in which the actions of Lo’ak (Britain Dalton) and his siblings put the entire Sully clan in unnecessary danger. [The Way of Water](https://www.theguardian.com/film/2022/dec/13/avatar-the-way-of-water-review-james-cameron) is going to make quite the splash its predecessor did. Given we’ve now seen that the villain isn’t just a sociopathic killing machine bent on the destruction of anything that gets in his and the humans’ way, might there even be a Vader-style last-minute change of allegiance waiting further down the line? The baddies who have returned to take down the Na’vi and steal all the verdant forest moon’s valuable resources are up against an entire planet of sentient alien species, gods and superpowered beings (enough to make even the Marvel Cinematic Universe a little jealous). Will we meet flying Na’vi, or perhaps underground burrowing races who can pop up from beneath the ground and drag the Earthlings down to Pandoran hell? Then there are the sentient, whale-like Tulkun, who we are told are more intelligent than human beings, with the ability to create complex art.

Richard Miller, executive vice-president of technology at the digital entertainment-technology company [Pixelworks](https://www.pixelworks.com/en), explains it as the culprit behind instances “when the filmic look becomes annoying or distracting.”

A film like this takes a lot of money to make, and as such is a technological marvel. Perhaps Indigenous futurism should be left in the hands of actual Indigenous filmmakers who know and can tell these stories? The time has come for Indigenous directors to re-make these westerns and continue making our own Indigenous futurism films in our own image, to flip the script, tease the tropes, put Indian before Cowboy. Still, I’m left wondering, what if a producer just gave a Maori-inspired project like this to an actual Indigenous filmmaker, perhaps an actual Māori filmmaker like Taika Waititi, and we had an actual Indigenous filmmaker tell the story instead of a story told through the lens of a white guy updating colonial western movie tropes? Sully (a Marine in his former human life) and his sons communicate to each other in military speak and it’s a bit cringey; his sons reply with “yes sir” to their father not as a sign of respect but because that’s just the way they relate to each other; they are sons in their father’s army. In this case it’s the Sully family fighting against the elements and their enemies to persevere on the frontier. The concept (much like the film) walks a fine line between being corny and magical, and you just have to go with the concept, should you buy into it. At 3 hours and 10 minutes, the film needs a more aggressive editor. The lack of respect the Sully clan have for their human adoptee becomes comical as the movie progresses. Cameron’s comments are tone-deaf, condescending, and not the kind of ally I want or need to help tell Indigenous stories. Not necessarily, but it’s certainly jarring to hear in a family supposedly influenced by Indigenous culture. The Sully family fly far out to sea where they meet Tonowari (Cliff Curtis), the chief of the Māori-inspired Metkayina clan.

While “I See You” may not have become the runaway success that “My Heart Will Go On Was,” it’s part of fans’ “warts and all” love of the first film. Since “I See You” is the love theme of Jake and Neytiri, it makes sense that the sequel would introduce new songs and undertones that represent their children. “I See You” isn’t necessarily played in full during The Way of Water, as the new score by Simon Franglen introduces new themes that represent the additional characters, moments, and lessons within the sequel. It’s also a sign of romance; like in the first film, “I See You” has a double meaning as a romantic phrase. According to the guidebook The World of Avatar: A Visual Exploration, “I See You” is a formal greeting and sign of respect. While a lesser filmmaker may have attempted to set aside something like “I See You” altogether, Cameron refuses to apologize for anything in the first Avatar that may have seemed a little corny.

They cemented Tom Cruise as the last of Hollywood's great action stars and inspired the business to invest in over-the-top action movies that favored spectacle without losing their narrative punch. Ghost Protocol was the beginning of a new chapter in the Mission: Impossible series. Tom Cruise reprised his role as Ethan Hunt in a story that featured the IMF's disintegration following an incident in Russia, forcing Hunt and his team to go undercover to clear their names. The film tells the story of Katniss Everdeen, a young girl who volunteers as a tribute for a televised competition to the death known as the Hunger Games. However, the film was the first to become a bonafide phenomenon. However, none of its successors managed to repeat The Hunger Games' critical and commercial success. The film centers on humanity's efforts to colonize the moon Pandora, which threatens the survival of the indigenous tribe known as Na'vi.

Even if that’s true, it seems highly unlikely that the final version of the third movie would clock in anywhere close to that, it is an interesting rumor that could certainly lend fuel to a future “release the Cameron Cut” fire. And anything additional that hasn’t already been worked on by the film’s CGI team would like take a lot of time and money to produce. Adding to this fuel is Cameron’s own history with director’s cuts, including Aliens, where he added back in some critical scenes, which add backstory for protagonist Ripley and help tie the rest of the movie together. According to Jeff Sneider on [James Cameron](https://www.polygon.com/reviews/23506051/avatar-2-way-water-review-james-cameron) is no stranger to recutting his own movies, but it seems like [Avatar: The Way of Water](https://www.polygon.com/23513204/avatar-the-way-of-water-plot-theme) won’t be getting that treatment, despite rumors to the contrary. But Landau has some clarification for that too, along with updates on an Avatar 2 director’s cut.

Regarding the quote, Landau said that he thinks “Jim is seizing on opportunities for other stories with two different cuts—the idea would be that you build a larger, epic narrative that can last six hours, and you pull a two-and-a-half-hour movie out of it.” But Avatar 3 has already been shot and The Way of Water is already in theaters. There’s really not a lot more that Cameron can do about getting those six-hour cuts to fans. That movie is going to stay the full three hours and you will love it. Just, one’s the novel, and one’s the movie.”

Avatar: The Way of Water leaves plenty of storylines unresolved, and hopefully Avatar 3 will reveal the answers to the questions that remain.

Considering it was such a big aspect of The Way of Water, Payakan’s future and fate with the other tulkun will have to be addressed in Avatar 3. Avatar 3 has the opportunity to explore their dynamic further, and perhaps with some time — or the length of the third film — Neytiri’s animosity towards Spider might change. While this makes sense for them currently, Avatar 3 should address whether Jake and Neytiri will ever go back to the forest once the human threat is eradicated, even if it’s for a short while. However, the end of Avatar: The Way of Water didn’t indicate whether Jake and his family would ever return to their home with the Omaticaya. With that in mind, Jake and Neytiri could bring Pandora’s various water clans together to protect their planet against Quaritch and the RDA in Avatar 3. It’s possible Spider will keep that information to himself to remain in the good graces of Jake. Lo’ak befriended Payakan during Avatar: The Way of Water, and he was appalled the young tulkun was exiled by his species. This is crucial information that is barely touched upon in Avatar: The Way of Water, and which could prove immensely useful in Avatar 3. This may have to do with the identity of Kiri’s biological father, but she is able to connect with Pandora in a way that is wholly unique to her. Regardless of that charged moment, however, Spider had no true personal connection with his biological father, and returned to the side of the Sully family shortly after saving Quaritch. Co-written and directed by James Cameron, The Way of Water ends a 13-year wait for the highly anticipated Avatar sequel, returning to Pandora to explore new adventures and characters. Spider knows the threat Quaritch poses to Jake and his family, and saw first-hand the violence he wrought.

Perhaps Indigenous futurism should be left in the hands of actual Indigenous filmmakers who know and can tell these stories? A film like this takes a lot of money to make, and as such is a technological marvel. The time has come for Indigenous directors to re-make these westerns and continue making our own Indigenous futurism films in our own image, to flip the script, tease the tropes, put Indian before Cowboy. Still, I’m left wondering, what if a producer just gave a Maori-inspired project like this to an actual Indigenous filmmaker, perhaps an actual Māori filmmaker like Taika Waititi, and we had an actual Indigenous filmmaker tell the story instead of a story told through the lens of a white guy updating colonial western movie tropes? Sully (a Marine in his former human life) and his sons communicate to each other in military speak and it’s a bit cringey; his sons reply with “yes sir” to their father not as a sign of respect but because that’s just the way they relate to each other; they are sons in their father’s army. In this case it’s the Sully family fighting against the elements and their enemies to persevere on the frontier. The concept (much like the film) walks a fine line between being corny and magical, and you just have to go with the concept, should you buy into it. At 3 hours and 10 minutes, the film needs a more aggressive editor. The lack of respect the Sully clan have for their human adoptee becomes comical as the movie progresses. Cameron’s comments are tone-deaf, condescending, and not the kind of ally I want or need to help tell Indigenous stories. Not necessarily, but it’s certainly jarring to hear in a family supposedly influenced by Indigenous culture. The Sully family fly far out to sea where they meet Tonowari (Cliff Curtis), the chief of the Māori-inspired Metkayina clan.

However, HFR playback is a new technology that most theaters are not set up for: proper rendering of HFR requires the very latest projectors or costly upgrades to existing projectors. When Jake rode the legendary beast into battle against the humans, he made himself a legendary figure to unite the tribes against the invasive skypeople. This is due to a concept that was only hinted at in the first film, in that Earth is dying and the human race now needs a new home, and will take it by force if necessary. We learn fairly quickly why Jake Sully came to Pandora, but we learn a bit later why the humans are on the planet to begin with. When Neytiri tells the story of the sign from Eywa, Mo'at, being the tribe's spiritual leader, convinces her husband to train Jake in their ways to see if he is worthy. Chief Tonowari (Cliff Curtis) initially expresses concern that the Sully family will not fit in here since their skills in the forest have no place here in the oceans, but still respects Jake's legacy enough to welcome him and his family. Jake's brother was also a part of the Avatar program, where humans had created clone bodies that morphed the DNA of their own and the native Na'vi in an attempt to ease relations with them.
