Would Elon Musk Actually Step Down as Twitter's C.E.O.? (The New York Times)

The Twitter owner has said he will resign as chief executive, but it's far from certain whether he would actually step down as the boss.

Musk's statement comes after millions of Twitter users voted for him to step down in a poll he conducted.

Both Musk and Twitter have been embroiled in a series of controversies ever since he paid $44 billion to acquire the social media platform in late October. Koguan later [noted](https://twitter.com/KoguanLeo/status/1604502621284208641) he would prefer if Musk handed off the Twitter CEO role to someone else so he could become a “full time” CEO for Tesla once again. The billionaire, however, reneged on this promise last month and began assuming the role of the final arbiter of what Twitter should and should not allow. The sharp decline has been driven by the poor performance of Tesla’s stock and has resulted in him ceding the world's richest person title to Bernard Arnault, CEO of luxury goods conglomerate LVMH. Musk’s announcement gave a slight bump to Tesla’s shares in after-hours trading after another bad day at the market where they crashed by 8.05% and dropped below $140 a share.

Billionaire Elon Musk confirmed on Tuesday he will step down as chief executive of Twitter once he finds a replacement who is "foolish enough".

Musk said: "Going forward, there will be a vote for major policy changes. As for tech leaders who could fit the bill, it has been said that the former COO of Meta Sheryl Sandberg could be a top pick. Twitter will make that change". The poll closed on Monday morning, and 57.5 per cent of the votes called for him to stand down. After that, I will just run the software & servers teams," Musk wrote on Twitter. But he will still run some key divisions of the social media platform.

Elon Musk says he will resign as soon as he finds someone "foolish enough" to take over the job.

But this is not the end of the Musk/Twitter show. He seemed to enjoy the circus he created. In the past Mr Musk has obeyed Twitter polls. It came after one user claimed that so-called bots appeared to have voted heavily in the poll about Mr Musk's role at the firm. Finding someone to take over the social media platform may be a challenge, according to Mr Musk. Twitter's paid-for verification feature was rolled out for a second time last week after its launch was paused. After that, I will just run the software & servers teams.— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) More than 17.5 million users voted, with 42.5% voting no to Mr Musk stepping down. For weeks, investors have called on Mr Musk to step down from running the social media platform, saying he has been distracted from properly running Tesla. Mr Musk said he found the claim "interesting". He is fond of quoting the Latin phrase vox populi, vox dei which roughly means "the voice of the people is the voice of God". Elon Musk has said he will resign as Twitter's chief executive officer when he finds someone "foolish enough to take the job".

Who could replace Elon Musk as Twitter CEO? (Evening Standard)

Here's a look at six candidates in the running for the coveted role should the billionaire follow through with his poll promise.

In 2014, he bought a stake in social network Reddit, alongside Peter Thiel — co-founder of Paypal — the sale of which to eBay earned Musk a reported $180 million. This was a joke, but he may have more in common with some of the more favoured candidates than you might think. While he has worked in publishing, this is tied to buying publishing entities such as The New York Observer, rather than having any experience in or knowledge of the field. He was fired towards the end of October as Musk took control. Musk was CEO of the company for less than a year, before it was known as PayPal. However, while Musk owns the company, the money he used to buy it was partially supplied through bank loans and investors. Musk made a lot of noise about the need to save money in the company, so this sacking may have been part of cost-cutting stipulations. Bringing back a previous senior member of the platform could be seen as a stabilising influence. He was then CEO from 2019 to 2022. It seems almost impossible that Musk would be willing to reappoint Agrawa and effectively replace himself with his predecessor. She is seen as a “Girlboss” icon, and is author of one of the lead texts of this feminism offshoot, Lean In. However, he has publicly spoken out against moves made by Musk since he left Twitter in May 2022.

It was not immediately clear if Musk was serious, and no formal announcement beyond the tweet had been made.

"Again, the suspension occurred with no warning, process or explanation — this time as our reporter merely sought comment from Musk for a story," Buzbee said. Musk was questioned in court on Nov. He had equated the accounts to doxxing, saying they posed a risk by revealing people's locations. A growing number of Twitter users have left under Musk, or created alternative accounts on rival platforms and included those addresses in their Twitter profiles. Many of those accounts were restored following an online poll by Musk. Twitter no longer has a press office so it was not possible to ask why. He's laid off half of the workforce, axed contract content moderators and disbanded a council of trust and safety advisors. The poll, which Musk posted on Sunday night, asked simply: "Should I step down as head of Twitter? That decision had generated immediate blowback, including criticism from past defenders of Twitter's new owner. I will abide by the results of this poll."
