On the contrary, in many ways, the cinema nepo-baby is just another way in which cultural and social capital play out to ensure that the privileged are able to remain in their positions of power. Together, these [families control the majority](https://www.republicworld.com/entertainment-news/regional-indian-cinema/south-indian-film-families-who-have-worked-since-generations.html) of all the resources and capital in the film business, and often also remain the most popular faces of the industry. In a way, actors are only the most visible of the nepo-babies, but their success is also determined by their connections to adjacent industries. When meritocracy is hailed as a supreme medium to count talent, it invisibilizes the privileges one has access to that make it possible for them to be meritorious in the first place. Take the example of classical music or dance, for instance, where children of noted artists are often expected to carry forward the legacy of their parents and their parents. One could argue that nepotism in the arts has existed almost as long as the arts themselves. Sure, talking about famous people's famous parents is fun. But there are so many other more nefarious forms of nepotism out there.
But nepo babies are the sparkly tip of the class critique iceberg. It’s not closed consciously, but it doesn’t seem to have to open.” The benefactors of this closed system aren’t quite nepo babies — they aren’t famous, nor are their parents — but they do reap the rewards of a parallel kind of privilege. [Olivia Jade](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/paigeskinner/lori-loughlin-olivia-jade-vlogs), daughter of Full House’s Lori Loughlin and face of the [2019 Varsity Blues scandal,](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/alessadominguez/operation-varsity-blues-netflix-college-admissions-documenta) in which rich and famous families were revealed to be buying their kids’ admission to elite universities. The spectrum of their privilege, painstakingly mapped by New York magazine, is very small. The flip side of this coin is the [school-to-prison pipeline](https://www.aclu.org/issues/juvenile-justice/juvenile-justice-school-prison-pipeline), in which under-resourced public schools discipline students via an escalating chain of zero-tolerance practices that start with suspensions and expulsions and frequently lead to juvenile detention, which sets kids up with early criminal records that hinder their job and housing prospects as they become adults. On the path of least resistance, they get taken care of first. But we should spend time meaningfully linking nepotism in the arts to class insularity in the rest of the world. [the hypocrisy](https://twitter.com/irosarioc/status/1604894454191517696) of gleefully charting celebrity nepotism, [tweeting](https://twitter.com/gregotto/status/1604943203148382210): “This [article] is great. [On Twitter](https://twitter.com/lilyallen/status/1604903982589218832), English musician and “industry baby” Lily Allen made a similar point, writing, “The nepo babies y’all should be worrying about are the ones working for legal firms, the ones working for banks, and the ones working in politics. If the debate around “nepo babies” revolves solely and dismally around the babies themselves, and doesn’t expand into the ramifications for the rest of us, we let the latent class critique get subsumed in capitalism. The nepo baby discourse harnesses celebrity buzz to broach issues of inequality, but then the celebrity fixation takes over.

I just really think that we can’t get to a real solution without identifying the real problem, as fun as it is to laugh at the kids of famous people. I would bet Kristen Stewart didn't land the lead role in Twilight because her mom was a script supervisor for Flintstones: Viva Rock Vegas.
I’ve learned how to file quarterly taxes, but they’ve never attached my name as a producer to their projects for the upstanding reason that their projects don’t have producers. The film and TV industry is so big and includes so many workers, that saying someone’s (Kristen Stewart) mom was a script supervisor (for Flinstones: Viva Rock Vegas) is like....k? (George DiCaprio, for what it’s worth, did help his son launch his career as a kid, but his underground comics weren’t what did that.) For most of my life, my parents taught their craft at the college level, but they’ve also worked in the government as a contractor and a handyman, to name a few of their many gigs. And again, those are true of some artists (read: rich) and tend to be the artists we’ve seen shown in large cultural institutions. A lot of movie industry workers make decent money (thanks unions!), but they don’t have the influence NYMag is suggesting from just being on movie sets. They provide up to 12 hours of heat on a single charge and you can control the specific heat levels they are outputting. Cultural Capital Babies certainly have access to knowledge of an industry, as they describe, but I refuse to accept that that privilege is nepotism. What it more likely did was show her that going to business school or getting a government job isn’t the only way to make a stable income. My parents showed me that identifying as an artist doesn’t have to be tied to how the IRS categorizes you. Sure, creative parents can show their kids different ways to be an adult that don’t follow traditional career paths—but their creativity alone doesn’t land you a job. [recent feature](https://www.vulture.com/article/hollywood-nepotism-babies-list-taxonomy.html) on famous people who were genetically predisposed to the limelight through their parent’s careers and connections. It is to show the masses the divide, and hope that the fury they feel might be enough to begin to create change. We, in turn, only see the celebrities, and so assume they are the only ones in that terminal, when many of them are the poorest ones there. The people hoarding wealth at the very top of this country have created a system in which all rich people can convince themselves that they are middle class simply by looking upward. The people who are creating culture and starring in franchise films and gracing the covers of our magazines, the ones that are most interesting and inspiring to the greatest number of people, should be our richest people. There just shouldn’t be any level of wealth above that enjoyed by celebrities; they are, after all, supposed to be the stars. It is fine by me that they are rich, although I also think the wealth they have currently is the richest a person should be permitted to be. So is the anxiety and dread that people talk about when they talk about this, to some extent, but we can pin the experience of being middle class to a series of numbers and know it more precisely. The uber-wealthy want it to be hard to fathom. I also want Dakota Johnson to be one of the richest people in America because she should be. You are both, by the standards of the country you live in, rich. Somewhere around the 10-year mark, I was told, there was a bottleneck, and if you could get through the bottleneck and out onto the other side, you would be more secure, more able to write the kinds of things you wanted to write. And what rich kids see when they look around is people richer than them, people with even more money and privilege than they have, and they become convinced that their position is harder than most.

Though, it’s important to note, that in the case of nepotism, “crashing and burning” just means that they are still absolutely, completely fine, and richer than most people ever will be in their entire life. New York Magazine unveiled The Year of the Nepo Baby cover but what exactly is a nepo baby? Here's the meaning and origin explored.

She’s known for her sleek, versatile, and understatedly-glamorous beauty aesthetic. She consistently works with Celine, but has also walked the runways for Prada and Alexander McQueen amongst other brands. Her signature look usually involves a soft glow and lined lips, but as a high fashion model, she sometimes dabbles in more editorial beauty looks. For the 2022 Met Gala she switched up her appearance entirely with one biggest (and most divisive) beauty trends of the year: She’s found her niche reviving Y2K beauty trends to her millions of followers, including skinny eyebrows, glossy lips, and ’90s hair accessories. In addition to her talent as an actress, Maude has also developed a signature beauty look that invokes Old Hollywood glamour, complete with a short finger-waved bob and a matte red lip. Perennially influential Zoe Kravitz inspired Black girls everywhere to try out her long, undone micro-braids (also called goddess braids) when she sported the look in 2021. Iris Law is the ultimate cool-girl Brit—there’s not a look she wouldn’t try no matter how colorful or daring. Some nepo babies have come under scrutiny lately because of how they sometimes obliviously depict their own journeys in the entertainment industry (not to mention the concept of nepotism itself can be problematic as its rooted in white systems of power), but regardless of how you feel about them, the public fascination only seems to be growing.

But the internet has democratized our entertainment and metamorphosed the idea of a “superstar” or a “sensation.” Fame is available so much more broadly. We still have actors and sportspeople and musicians and models, but we also have nice-enough looking strangers completely dominating social channels with a zillion followers. We love new things and we love a backstory. At a time when we could be knee-deep in egg nog and grinding to “Carol of the Bells,” we’re instead asking who parented our most famous folk. The walls of our assumed meritocracy are crumbling as we sniff out the conspiratorially rife nepotism in our midsts. There’s a (Witherspoon-)Phillippe, a Spielberg, a little Björk.
Lily Allen shared her thoughts on nepotism after previously disclosing that she was offered a role with her real-life brother, Alfie Allen.
Allen went on to say, "People connected to my songs and that the songs came from me, I also had quite a fraught relationship with some of my family members so it felt difficult for me to attribute my successes to them, at the time. Allen then noted that she believes "nepo babies are being somewhat scapegoated" and added that there needs to be more focus on "wealth inequality, about lack of programs and funding." However, Allen's public stance on nepotism has reminded some people of the singer's previous statement regarding one of her other famous relatives, her brother, Alfie Allen. Allen said, "I felt like I worked extremely hard and that I deserved the success that I had." It's worth noting that the British pop singer also fits into the category of celebrities with famous parents, as Allen is the daughter of Trainspotting actor Keith Allen and film producer Alison Owen. The piece in question focuses on the shocking amount of successful celebrities in the entertainment world who have famous parents.
