Big Bet - K-Drama Episode 1 Recap & Review (The Review Geek)

Episode 1 of Big Bet begins in the Philippines, 2015. A pair of guys show up in Korea Town, with one of them heading upstairs to a real estate shop, ...

The trip sees them off to Busan, where Moo-Sik gets a taste of gambling, and even tries his hand at a few of the games. We get a fair chunk of time passing between 1976 and 2000 though and it’ll be interesting to see if those years are actually fleshed out in future episodes or whether we’re just left with this big time jump. Naturally, as all of this is illegal, Kyung-Duk is thrown back in jail again, leaving Moo-Sik and his mother alone. So naturally, Moo-Sik decides to take 100 copies and manages to sell them all. Mu-Sik tells them it’s a mistake but it’s no good, he’s handcuffed and taken to the Bureau of Immigration. He hits his son for discipline until he learns how to read. The pair head out exploring together, deciding to hustle and make some money. Moo-Sik narrates his life growing up, including eking out a living at the daycare center. Moo-Sik tries to stay calm, until he receives a message from his associate, telling him the whole thing is a trap. However, the waiter acts shadily, hurriedly phoning someone and asking them to show up quickly. And just like that, a whole bunch of armed guards show and arrest him. He seems to be a regular here and he asks about an American waiting for him.

Stream It Or Skip It: 'Big Bet' On Hulu, A Korean Drama About A Casino Bigwig Falsely Accused Of Murder · Opening Shot: Two men are in a car in Aguiles, ...

There’s a bit of a logic problem in the first episode, as we think that Mu-sik is going into the casino business with his old friend from the orphanage, as we see the friend at the different time periods represented in the episode. Maybe we’re in a good mood, but whatever silliness the show has actually feeds into a vibe that makes it a more lively show to watch. None of these events in the show are laugh-out-loud, but they show that Big Bet is going to be more of a broad, pulpy crime drama than something that takes itself seriously. A young Mu-sik (Lee Kyu-hyung) is at an orphanage after his mother (Bae Hae-sun) left him there the prior year, and he’s already showing signs that he’s going to be a good businessman, proposing that he and some other kids pool their pocket change to get some fried chicken, via games of Rock, Paper, Scissors. Sometimes crime dramas have a bit of a light tone, or at least has its characters utter a bit of a jokey line, to show viewers that they shouldn’t be taking the story completely seriously. A new Korean crime drama on Hulu (and Disney+ outside the US) is one of those that serves us its drama with a wink.
