Apple continues to test an all-new Mac Pro with an M2 Ultra chip, but the company has likely abandoned plans to release a higher-end configuration with a so-called "M2 Extreme" chip, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The redesign took the Mac Pro in an entirely new direction, spearheaded by a polished aluminum cylinder that became unofficially dubbed the "trashcan." In the latest edition of his newsletter today, Gurman said the Mac Pro with the M2 Ultra chip will be available... Apple plans to release new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M2 Pro and M2 Max chip options "early next year," according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The report explains that Apple's work on search technology is facing setbacks amid a loss of talent to Google. Apple is working on an online search engine to rival Google amid wider improvements to Spotlight search, according to a recent report from The Information. As the year comes to an end, we've recapped four products discontinued by Apple in 2022. 5G: Apple To Stick With Qualcomm For iPhone 15 (Gizchina.com)

The iPhone 15 series will still use a Qualcomm 5G chips and this new 5G chip is what Apple will use for its next flagships.

With the iPhone 15, rumors have it that it will feature a more advanced X70 chip. Reports say that TSMC will be the main supplier of the Qualcomm 5G chips. According to report from DigiTimes, Apple is still in the process of developing its own custom-made 5G modem. As a matter of fact, the iPhone 14 series were supposed to feature a 5G modem from its mother company. Unfortunately, the iPhone 15 cannot still be able to make use of this 5G chip. For some years now, the Cupertino company has been working on its own 5G chips, but the challenge seems to be more than what Apple anticipated.

iPhone 15 could miss out on Apple's own 5G modem (Tom's Guide)

There's now more evidence that Apple may not use its own 5G modem in the iPhone 15, an upgrade that's missed several previous iPhone generations as well.

But this is now the second source to claim [the 5G modem in the iPhone 15 won't be Apple-made](https://www.tomsguide.com/news/iphone-15-modem-reportedly-wont-come-from-apple-heres-why). [Apple's been rumored to be working on a proprietary 5G modem for several years](https://www.tomsguide.com/news/iphones-wont-get-apples-5g-chip-until-2022-report), in line with how it designs its own A-series and M-series systems-on-chip (SoCs) for its iOS and Mac devices. [iPhone 15](https://www.tomsguide.com/news/iphone-15) may be the next in a long line of iPhones to not come with a key Apple-stamped component: the 5G modem. The specific 5G modem is thought to be the [Snapdragon X70](https://www.tomsguide.com/news/iphone-14-likely-to-miss-out-on-qualcomms-latest-5g-modem-advance), announced earlier this year, but the main point is that this isn't Apple's own modem design. We will have to wait until the fall of 2023 to find out for sure though. Ideally, Apple having complete control over its own 5G modem would mean tighter integration with the other components, hopefully resulting in faster speeds and greater power efficiency than the more generic Snapdragon models.

Apple Not Ready to Give Up on Qualcomm for iPhone 15 (Softpedia News)

And while the development of an in-house 5G modem started many years ago, it looks like Apple won't have the technology ready for the launch of the iPhone 15.

However, it looks like the iPhone maker will miss the 2023 target for bringing its own custom 5G modem to the lineup of smartphones, and it’s all just a matter of time until confirmation is offered. iPhone 16 could thus become the first iPhone model to be fitted with a custom Apple 5G modem. This should obviously allow for significant upgrades in key areas, including faster speeds and improved battery efficiency.

iPhone 15 Will Continue To Feature Qualcomm's 5G Modems, But ... (Wccftech)

As Apple continues to work on its custom solution, one report claims that iPhone 15 models will continue featuring Qualcomm 5G modems.

[MacRumors](https://www.macrumors.com/2022/12/21/iphone-15-qualcomm-5g-modem/) states that TSMC will develop chips used for the upcoming Snapdragon 5G modem. The level of complexity when developing an in-house 5G modem is greater than churning out an Apple A-series or M-series SoC every year. Just like the iPhone 14 series, the iPhone 15 will continue to feature 5G modems mass-produced by Qualcomm, and this time, these chips will be significantly more advanced.

According to Strategy Analytics Handset Component Technology (HCT) Service Research Report “Baseband Market Share Tracking in the Second Quarter of 2022”, the global cellular baseband chip market will grow by 19% in Q2 2022, reaching $8.7 billion. Qualcomm led the baseband market with a 59% revenue share, followed by MediaTek with 29% and Samsung LSI with 6%. The outside world expects that with the arrival of ALD equipment, Largan’s capital expenditure will be pushed to a new high. In addition, the company will also bring major upgrades to the camera capacity. The reports from the market reveal that the flagship model of the iPhone 15 series will come with a periscope lens for the first time. Taiwan media points out that due to the long delivery time of the equipment and the fact that the equipment still needs to be verified, Largan placed an order to purchase the equipment last year and mastered the noise-resolving light (Flare) technology. [iPhone 15 series](https://www.gizchina.com/2022/11/30/iphone-15-to-use-a-significantly-better-camera-sensor/) will continue to use Qualcomm’s 5G modem (baseband chip). [Ming-Chi Kuo](https://www.gizchina.com/2022/11/30/iphone-15-to-use-a-significantly-better-camera-sensor/) reports that the iPhone 15 may likely adopt a “holeless” design.

Apple's custom 5G modem won't be ready in time for iPhone 15, new ... (PhoneArena)

It seems the iPhone 15 family won't see the introduction of Apple's anticipated proprietary 5G chip.

[Qualcomm revealed in a earnings report](https://www.phonearena.com/news/iphone-15-5g-modem-qualcomm_id143474)that it expects to be responsible for the majority of the iPhone 15 5G chip supply. We expect that the affordable iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus could get 120Hz displays, and there's some chance that the Dynamic Island design will trickle down to those models as well. Why would a proprietary 5G chip be beneficial to Apple and the regular iPhone user? There's lots of rumors about a possible additional periscope camera, or at least a longer telephoto lens on said iPhone 15 Ultra. Said 5G chip was announced earlier in 2022 and was advertised as the "world's 1st 5G AI processor in a 5G modem-RF system", which reportedly boosts 5G performance by a significant margin in both sub-6GHz and mmWave scenarios. However, issues have regularly pushed back the silicon, and despite our earlier expectations that we might finally see the silicon roll out along with the iPhone 15 lineup in late 2023, we might have to wait a bit longer still.
