The iPhone 15 series will still use a Qualcomm 5G chips and this new 5G chip is what Apple will use for its next flagships.

With the iPhone 15, rumors have it that it will feature a more advanced X70 chip. Reports say that TSMC will be the main supplier of the Qualcomm 5G chips. According to report from DigiTimes, Apple is still in the process of developing its own custom-made 5G modem. As a matter of fact, the iPhone 14 series were supposed to feature a 5G modem from its mother company. Unfortunately, the iPhone 15 cannot still be able to make use of this 5G chip. For some years now, the Cupertino company has been working on its own 5G chips, but the challenge seems to be more than what Apple anticipated.

There's now more evidence that Apple may not use its own 5G modem in the iPhone 15, an upgrade that's missed several previous iPhone generations as well.

The specific 5G modem is thought to be the [Snapdragon X70](https://www.tomsguide.com/news/iphone-14-likely-to-miss-out-on-qualcomms-latest-5g-modem-advance), announced earlier this year, but the main point is that this isn't Apple's own modem design. We will have to wait until the fall of 2023 to find out for sure though. Ideally, Apple having complete control over its own 5G modem would mean tighter integration with the other components, hopefully resulting in faster speeds and greater power efficiency than the more generic Snapdragon models.

And while the development of an in-house 5G modem started many years ago, it looks like Apple won't have the technology ready for the launch of the iPhone 15.

However, it looks like the iPhone maker will miss the 2023 target for bringing its own custom 5G modem to the lineup of smartphones, and it’s all just a matter of time until confirmation is offered. iPhone 16 could thus become the first iPhone model to be fitted with a custom Apple 5G modem. This should obviously allow for significant upgrades in key areas, including faster speeds and improved battery efficiency.

As Apple continues to work on its custom solution, one report claims that iPhone 15 models will continue featuring Qualcomm 5G modems.
