The message, which will be broadcast on Christmas Day, was poignantly filmed inside St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, where the Queen was laid to rest.

As is their tradition, members of the family will accompany the King and Queen Consort to church on Christmas morning. It is the first time the family has gathered here since 2019, and of course, their first Christmas without the Queen. The message, which was recorded on 13 December and will be broadcast on Christmas Day, was poignantly filmed inside St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, where the The monarch's Christmas broadcast is a long-standing tradition and is shown across the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. He and Camilla, the Queen Consort are expected to be joined by family members including the Prince and Princess of Wales and their three children, and the Earl and Countess of Wessex and their two children. One message he does convey, however, is his passion for matters environmental, with the Christmas tree featured in the broadcast decorated with ornaments made from sustainable materials including paper and glass, as well as natural pine cones. It seems unlikely the king will reference the personal family woes that have dogged his reign so far.

He will want to present the message of a family pulling together in grief.’ It will be as vanilla as it can be.’ It will be vanilla in respect of them. Also expected to be included in the speech is an acknowledgement of the cost-of-living crisis and the effect it has had on families throughout the nation. The elephant in the room will be the ongoing family crisis between the Windsors and The King’s Christmas message was recorded in the quire of St George’s Chapel, where the Royal Family sat during the Queen’s committal service, and where the former monarch was eventually laid to rest alongside her husband,

We must continue to promote peace and safety. For others, it is time for meditation, prayer and a fulfilment of spiritual growth, and inner peace. For many it is a time to joyfully reunite with our families and friends, to re-ignite bonds, and celebrate the gift of life. Internationally, the war in Ukraine, the accompanying supply chain challenges, and global inflation have had our undivided attention. On that note, let us also remember families who are facing their first Christmas having lost a loved one. As the late Queen Elizabeth II said in her last Christmas message,” It is the simplicity of the Christmas Story that makes it so universally appealing: simple happenings which formed the starting point of the life of Jesus- a man whose teachings have travelled through generations and time and has been the cornerstone of the Christian faith.

Proud of the victories on and off the pitch/court. The entertainment will be off the charts on and off the pitch. The team who managed the whole build and opening deserve a medal. Proud to be part of the Sarries family. Listening to Owen in a team meeting, even I think I might be able to go out there and hit a ruck… Thank you to every single member of Saracens Group staff and players. This is huge testament to Lucy Englander and our partnerships team who set the bar very high. We trended on Twitter with the Ben Earl re-signing content and who knew Jamie and Elliot might have an acting career post rugby with their re-signing video and “Couples Counselling”. Our Saracens Women have had a disjointed start to the season with Saracens proudly having 19 players taking part in the Rugby World Cup. There was a two hour interview with an independent panel at Twickenham and I came out feeling so proud and energised to be working with such a fantastic team of people who are all hugely ambitious for the future of our Saracens Women’s team. The atmosphere at StoneX has been brilliant and I have loved hearing all your passionate voices. Our Pioneers have given 3,500+ volunteer hours of their time so far this season, and a total of approaching 800,000 hours since the programme started!

Five years later, she made her first televised Christmas broadcast. As the longest-serving British monarch in history and a Queen who ruled in a time of great technological development, Queen Elizabeth II made the Christmas speeches her own. As depicted in the 2010 film, The King's Speech, King George VI had a speech impediment, which made the increasingly prominent role broadcasting had in the work of a monarch challenging. The first Christmas speech was broadcast live from the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, in the east of England, and followed a special programme called All the World Over, where British citizens from the Empire shared their Christmas greetings.

As many of us celebrate a simpler Christmas, the Reverend Lucy Winkett is moved by the generosity of those often dealing with their own difficult ...

This is one of the ways in which I think that the message of Christmas makes sense in a secularised society. So, perhaps this Christmas might be a simpler, more thoughtful one, expressing the sort of empathy and imagination shown by our homeless guest, not only for other people, but for the Earth, and making every gift, however simple, more beautiful, because it’s given with love. The younger generations can see that a throwaway culture harms the planet — fast-fashion clothing may raise eyebrows if unwrapped on Christmas Day. As our Wren church was consecrated in 1684, we were in the right place to be discussing the aftermath of the only 11 years of Republic that England has had and the debate went long into the evening. As this year’s John Lewis advertisement — with its focus on children in care — suggests, society is thinking about deeper themes, beyond the determination to have a good time. Nostalgia plays a large part in our celebrations as adults: it is a set of rituals to return to, which anchor us somehow, especially if the memories are happy ones.

The power of the Christmas broadcast lies in its intimacy; its direct transmission to each of us in our own homes. The technology that enables that was reflected upon in the first broadcast (by radio), when George V addressed himself ‘To men and women so cut off by the snows, the desert or the sea, that only voices out of the air can reach them’. There will be another laugh missing this year for the King and the rest of the royal family. The idea of the Christmas broadcast was first proposed by Lord Reith in 1922. In the build-up to this year’s broadcast there has been much speculation about content: about what the King might say about Harry and Meghan, and – more importantly – about the late Queen, about his coronation in May and possible indications of his vision for his reign. For the royal Christmas broadcast is important, and this year’s of course marks a new era.
