The history of new year's resolutions (Sky HISTORY)

It's a quirky tradition that dates back thousands of years with serious symbolic meaning for some ancient civilisations.

New Year’s resolutions are a secular activity in the modern age. Sticking to a resolution isn’t always easy and the sense of accomplishment can be massive. Other key traditions linked closely to your New Year’s resolutions include the Ball Drop in Times Square in New York. Modern New Year’s Resolutions appear to date back to the 19th century. The resolution element came in the form of a promise to the gods. In 46 BCE Julius Caesar established January 1st as the beginning of the New Year.

This manifestation of the phenomenon is a reaction to what researchers call “moral beauty.” Reflecting on those qualities can be powerful. “We shift from an egocentric view, seeing the world through our eyes only, to a shared attention to what is transpiring.” If you’d like a bit more collective effervescence in 2023, consider making a list of the ways you’ve experienced that joy in the past. “We do that intuitively, and I think that’s a good thing.” “Take a moment and think about someone whose life has really brought you personal inspiration and meaning,” Keltner says. “Through moving in unison and convergence in feeling, a transformation in consciousness occurs,” he writes. Both are examples of what the French sociologist Émile Durkheim termed “collective effervescence,” aka moments when we find ourselves moving and acting in sync with those around us. “These practices are very intuitive—people around the world do them just as a part of being human. Keltner says these instances provide a powerful source of awe. But insight into awe’s pro-social benefits are particularly crucial now, at a time when the world’s most urgent problems—from the [climate crisis](https://www.sierraclub.org/press-releases/2022/08/inflation-reduction-act-marks-turning-point-history) and [dwindling biodiversity](https://www.sierraclub.org/sierra/biodiversity-about-have-its-climate-change-moment) to [racial injustice](https://www.sierraclub.org/sierra/2021-4-fall/top/invitation-save-planet-ending-white-supremacy)—will be addressed only through collective action sustained by strong communities. These “wonders of life,” as he describes them, include bite-size encounters with nature, music, art, and moral beauty and experiences of collective movement (found in dance and sports). The first days of a new year feel electric with possibility. Dacher Keltner, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, sees such individual focus as a missed opportunity.

Our New Year's resolutions for 2023: Editorial Board Roundtable (cleveland.com)

So how did 2022 work out for our Editorial Board Roundtable writers? Did we follow through on our resolutions? Did the year surprise us in any way, ...

I find in these fractured times my resolutions leaning outwards, as I resolve to do my best to encourage civil discourse and more engaged citizenship, particularly to serve the interests of our young people and their future. I’ve delivered more than my share of eulogies, and I always regret that the person in the casket cannot hear what I, and others, are saying. Since Daughter is masterfully handling wedding preparations, I resolve to use this pre-wedding time to declutter and tackle some home improvement projects ahead of the big day. What are our primary resolutions for the new year, and how do we propose to accomplish them? And how are we seeing 2023 and our personal footprints in it? And our resolutions included aspirations to keep fit through less sedentary pursuits while getting out more, and to reconnect with friends and leave pandemic isolation in the rear-view mirror.

This delicious combination combines the classic comfort of poutine with the sophistication and elegance of truffles, the tangy rich flavor of ketchup, and the savory goodness of smoked meat. So next I asked it to create a “funny haiku poem” about winter in Canada. “Sure!” came the written reply.

Community leaders share New Year's resolutions (Jefferson City News Tribune)

As 2022 draws to a close, millions of people will be joining the tradition of making New Year's resolutions.

I'm always the optimist, and I hope 2023 is going to be really good for Cole County," Bushman said. "Two of them finish their college this year debt-free, so my resolution is to get the other two through debt-free as well," Otto said. Tergin said last month she expects a contract between the city and a developer on MSP to be finalized sometime at the beginning of the new year. "I'd like to do a few more small vacation getaways and just kind of spend more time with my wife and kids, and enjoy a little bit more of my life than I have in the past amid all of the chaos." "Personally, my wishes and prayers for 2023 are that my family and friends and all those I know or impact have a healthy, safe and good year," he added. He told staff the city will continue focusing on a litany of proposed projects and citywide goals. "I think it's working, and I think that people know my office is responsive," said Griffith, who will be starting his third term in the state House on Wednesday. "In 2023, my resolution is to experience more," she said. "Our goal is always the same: to keep moving up and keep getting better," Green said. While he has more irons in the fire and other projects to invest in, he said his resolution for 2023 was to slow down. He said business and personal life tended to blend together for him, but he hoped to change that in the new year. Dave Griffith, R-Jefferson City, said his New Year's resolution is to continue keeping constituent interests at the forefront of what he does.

I do not make resolutions in the New Year because a New Year can make you over-commit, and then when you fail to accomplish the resolutions make you feel horrible. We have been made to believe it is not important to do therapy, but I believe it is something we should all embrace. I do not plan for the future; I simply take it one day at a time. This is not the first time my gift has opened up a door for me to travel, but this trip was most memorable. Also, despite the stress, I was able to put in the work and never missed a class, or assignment deadline. One that five years down the line you can look back and know 100 per cent that it contributed positively to where you are now. Also being invited by UN Women to New York in November as part of a group of global activists in the fight for Human Rights and equality. I plan to keep walking in faith; it is not over until God says it is. To be able to deliver on the silver screen in such a capacity after such a long time was thrilling. One achievement that stands out is being invited to host a session with goalkeepers in New York in September by Melinda French Gates and the Gates team. It takes a lot of practice and patience, but it is worth it The New Year is upon us, a time for a fresh start.

[Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32667735/) (opens in new tab), found that a willingness to change is an important factor in successfully making change. A 2002 study published in the The [human brain](https://www.livescience.com/29365-human-brain.html) (opens in new tab) relies more heavily on habit-creating mechanisms than personal goals or desires when motivation levels are low, the study found. [Health Psychology](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27280365/) (opens in new tab), looked into the impact of changing attitudes, norms and self-efficacy (a belief in one's abilities to execute a behavior) on health-related behaviors such as exercise and dieting. People, including those less skilled in the task they had been assigned to, were more motivated and successful as part of a group than they were individually, the study found. [Journal of Personality and Social Psychology](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23730907/) (opens in new tab) in 2013 indicates that habits can help people adhere to their goals even when their personal motivation or willpower is low. "The secret to controlling our behavior is to plan ahead to make sure that when it comes to doing things we set out to do — or not do things we want to avoid doing — our desire to follow the plan is stronger than anything else," West said. The researchers found that inducing changes in the participants' attitudes, norms and self-efficacy, led to medium-size changes in behavior, in areas such as diet, condom use and stopping smoking. [Management Science](https://faculty.wharton.upenn.edu/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Dai_Fresh_Start_2014_Mgmt_Sci.pdf) (opens in new tab), suggests that events like New Year's, birthdays, holidays or even the beginning of a week or month are associated with an increase in aspirational behavior. Her research focuses on behavior change in relation to health and the environment. Robert West is a professor emeritus of health psychology at University College London (UCL), England, and an associate of UCL's Centre for Behaviour Change. "[It's] what psychologists refer to as the ‘intention-behavior gap,’" she said.

The Psychology Of New Year's Resolutions (IFLScience)

As a professor of behavioural addiction I know how easy people can fall into bad habits and why on trying to give up those habits it is easy to relapse.

Letting family and friends know that you have a New Year’s resolution that you really want to keep will act as both a safety barrier and a face-saver. If you want to be fitter and healthier, do just one thing at a time. You need to begin by making resolutions that you can keep and that are practical. [ten times](https://www.researchgate.net/profile/John_Norcross/publication/11443909_Auld_lang_Syne_Success_predictors_change_processes_and_self-reported_outcomes_of_New_Year%27s_resolvers_and_nonresolvers/links/0fcfd50aaacf2d164e000000.pdf) more likely to achieve their goals than those who don’t. You shouldn’t feel guilty about giving in to your cravings but accept that it is part of the learning process. It can be anytime. Resolutions usually come in the form of lifestyle changes and changing behaviour that has become routine and habitual (even if they are not problematic) can be hard to do. But there are tried and tested ways that can help people stick to their resolutions – here are my personal favourites: But don’t do them all at once, just choose one and do your best to stick to it. If you want to reduce your alcohol intake because you tend to drink alcohol every day, don’t immediately go teetotal. If you really want to cut down smoking or drinking, real friends won’t put temptation in your way and can help monitor your behaviour. For some people, it takes something radical for them to change their ways.

The third step is to anticipate obstacles and to have a backup plan. “The second step is to have a step-by-step plan to ensure we don’t start to hard. All too often, people make a resolution because other people encourage them to, or because they want to do something for someone else. If you do it for your own reasons, it becomes easier to overcome those challenges, and reach your goal. While there are many reasons why people don’t succeed in any goal they set for themselves, motivation is the most significant factor in predicting success. Maybe you want to go to the gym more, or cut back on coffee or alcohol.

"I had to change my sleep schedule to go to bed earlier and wake up earlier in order to fit my training in. I wanted to challenge myself and see how much of it I could get back," she says. "If I set a goal to work on this every day, then I needed to do what I said I was going to do. She also noticed she had gained some weight toward the end of the year and knew she wanted to feel better. "I had already maintained my weight loss for a year at this point, so I just needed to continue to maintain and consistently push myself in the areas I was working on," she says. "It took me four months of consistently planking and doing headstands before I got up the courage to see if I could hold myself in a handstand. It was five months before McMichael could finally flip up in a handstand, and she continued to work on this skill right up until the day of my skin removal surgery. "I came across a photo on Instagram of a contortionist doing her thing, and although I was never contortionist-level flexible, I remembered how great it felt to be able to bend in half when I was a rhythmic gymnast/dancer. She was gifted a lower-body lift to remove the excess skin on her body, and she had a year to prepare for it, so she made it her goal to go into surgery in the best shape of her life. "I joined late 2021, but I told myself: 'Give it a full year of awkward learning experiences.' This way, I could see if it was something I'd pursue long-term to find that passion and spark for fitness again rather than going through the motions," she says. I began making healthier choices to my meals—I cut out soda and unnecessary calories from beverages and increased my water intake." "You really learn a lot about your body and what it needs to sustain that distance mentally and physically."
