Klay Thompson scored a season-high 54 points in Monday's double-overtime win against Atlanta.

They’ve now won five in a row without Curry and They dug themselves a huge early season hole and then watched Curry mess up his shoulder and sink to the background for a month. He was below 40 percent overall and below 35 percent from 3 as the Warriors stumbled out of the gate. Thompson became more patient, worked his way into better shape and has been shooting it much more consistently the past month. He wasn’t in game shape and his jumper was short the first month. He added eight rebounds, three assists and one block.

Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson had the attention of Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James.

There is a level of mutual respect between the two players, and it was cool to see James share that publicly. With Jordan Poole attempting 31 shots, Thompson and Poole combined for 70 of Golden State's 121 field goal attempts in this game. Thompson has shown signs of his pre-injury form at times this season, but this certainly looked like prime Klay Thompson in every single way.

Looney finished with 14 points to go with his game-high 20 rebounds, 10 of which came on the offensive end. Thompson’s 54 points were the second most of his career, trailing just his 60-point night against the Indiana Pacers on Dec. He shot 10-for-21 from 3-point range on Monday, his seventh career game with 10 or more threes. Both teams seemed to be in control at different points of regulation, with Golden State using a 70-point first half to go up by as many as 21 before the Hawks rallied behind a 42-point third quarter to eventually go up by as many as nine with just 5:47 to play in the fourth. In a game that seemed like it would never end, Klay had one of the best performances of his career and Kevon Looney hit the game-winner.

Murray quickly answered with a three of his own and Thompson missed a tough fadeaway on the other end. Out of a timeout, the Warriors put the ball in Klay’s hands. The Warriors were routinely grabbing second and even third shots on several of their possessions, while Atlanta did not have a single offensive rebound in the second overtime. Young ended Atlanta’s scoring drought in the final minute of overtime, knocking down a pair of free throws to cut the Hawks deficit to 129-128. Then, the ball got tipped to DiVincenzo who caught the ball off a bounce, in rhythm, and tied things up at 121 with 0.6 seconds left in regulation. In overtime, the Hawks quickly recovered from the shock of DiVincenzo’s shot, starting the five-minute period on a 5-0 run. The Warriors countered with a strong defensive stretch and several offensive possessions that resulted in trips to the free-throw line. Poole drove inside, drew some contact from a Hawks defender, and dribbled the ball out of bounds off his knee. The Hawks, on the other end, were just 2-for-16 from three in the first half and trailed 70-53. The Warriors lead slowly dissipated in the third quarter. The Warriors tried hard to give Monday's game away, but Klay Thompson rescued them from a potentially bad loss.

The great thing is he needs this experience to go through so he can feel what it’s like to be the main guy with Steph out and have elevate his game – not so much from scoring standpoint but just from an improvement standpoint. Jordan Poole on several occasions failed to find his hottest teammate, Thompson, when he was wide open, a cardinal sin for the point guard. Donte DiVincenzo drained a 3-pointer with 0.7 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into the first overtime. Thompson had 22 points in each half, and 10 points in the two overtimes, including eight of the 11 Golden State scored in the first OT. These are all great learning experiences for him. He was incredible.”
