Atmospheric rivers, bomb cyclone add up to mayhem in California (Los Angeles Times)

California is bracing for monumental weather conditions this week, with heavy rain, strong winds, snow and choppy surf expected thanks to a set of weather ...

In essence, the atmospheric rivers set to arrive will be accompanied by the bomb cyclone storm system. Forecasts show that moderate rains will give way to more intense and colder rain in the mountains along with snow and strong winds. The slow-moving storm stalled over the region, according to meteorologists, leading to a steady downpour. The atmospheric rivers that arrive in California flow over the Pacific Ocean, originating near Hawaii. An atmospheric river will arrive in California starting Wednesday and linger through Thursday. Another is set to arrive Saturday.

Midweek 'Bomb Cyclone' May Break Rain Records Already Broken ... (SFist)

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service are warning that the coming bomb cyclone looks to be even more brutal, windy, and wet than what we just ...

This is the system that will bring widespread high wind and heavy rain to Northern California tomorrow, along with considerable risk of flooding/wind damage.— Daniel Swain (@Weather_West) If the forecasts are right in terms of this incoming system being even wetter than Saturday's, that could mean that San Francisco's one-day rainfall record will be shattered this time — with Saturday coming less than a tenth of an inch from breaking the all-time record, set in November 1994. The radar picture shows a large plume of moisture coming off of the tropical stream around Hawaii, and rain is expected to be heaviest between 2 and 9 p.m. There is also a high wind advisory in place for all of the Bay Area, with gusts expected to top 50 miles per hour. This is truly a brutal system that we are looking at and needs to be take seriously." 🌧️🌧️🌧️— Gerry Díaz (@geravitywave) Also, the city is currently out of sandbags, but more may be coming. "The impacts will include widespread flooding, roads washing out, hillside collapsing, trees down (potentially fully groves), widespread power outages, immediate disruption to commerce, and, the worst of all, likely loss of human life. Saturday's rain was the most ever recorded on December 31 in downtown SF by a lot — more than double the record for that day, with the record being 2.12 inches set in 2005, and Saturday's total coming in at 5.46 inches (all-time record is 5.54 inches). [said](https://twitter.com/DrewTumaABC7/status/1610047289946681345) of the above statement, "[The National Weather Service] is not mincing words about our next atmospheric river." "To put it simply, this will likely be one of the most impactful systems on a widespread scale that this meteorologist has seen in a long while," writes one NWS meteorologist in a forecast update for Wednesday's storm. Meteorologists with the National Weather Service are warning that the coming bomb cyclone looks to be even more brutal, windy, and wet than what we just experienced on Saturday.

The 5.46 inches of rain that fell on the city was second only to the 5.54 inches of rain that fell on Nov. Many additional storms will roll ashore from the Pacific through the middle of January. San Francisco is likely to pick up 2 to 4 inches of rain from the storm with 1.50 to 3 inches on the way for Sacramento and Los Angeles. Some reservoir levels may surge to full capacity before the storm train eases down later in the month. Storm-related problems are likely to increase in Oregon and Washington. Hundreds of thousands of utility customers could experience power outages from the storm. There is the potential for road closures along I-80 due to heavy snowfall. When the barometric pressure falls at least 0.71 inch (24 millibars) in 24 hours, a storm has undergone bombogenesis, and meteorologists will often refer to this type of strengthening system as a bomb cyclone. Another significant problem from this storm will be caused by strong winds, which can approach hurricane force of 74 mph or greater in some locations. Where utility lines are in the way, power outages will result. Multiple areas face excessive rainfall on the order of 4-8 inches of rain. [Sacramento](https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/sacramento/95814/weather-forecast/347627) and [Los Angeles](https://www.accuweather.com/en/us/los-angeles/90012/weather-forecast/347625) will still receive heavy enough rain from the storm to lead to flash flooding, forecasters say.

Flood Watches span much of the state, from near the Oregon/California border to just north of the Los Angeles area.

In an average season, the lab sees 30 feet of snow. At minimum, we’re probably looking at three to four of above-average before we can really talk about getting out of the drought.” “We got rain on the way, and it’s going to be moving in as we go into Thursday morning.” Think of this as a narrow pipeline of moisture that originates in the tropics. While rain will fall at the lower elevations across the West, as you get higher in elevation, snow is expected. “Basically, an (atmospheric river) is a river in the sky of water vapor, and when it hits the mountains, (the moisture) is forced up over the mountains,” Marty Ralph, Director of the Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes, told FOX Weather.
