BOMB SHELTER: Love, Time, and Other Explosives. By Mary Laura Philpott. Atria Books. 288 pages. $27.
Frank, the friendly reptile who lives in her backyard and knocks on her door for free salads, is lucky enough to carry his home — his shelter — on his back. “The stories may be different for each of us, but the patterns reveal what we have in common as human beings.” In this collection, that common humanity shines in all its real, imperfect, worry-lined beauty. “My mom drew water for my bath and tossed wet clothes into the dryer and taught me to tie my shoes while my father did test runs for the end of the world.” I think of her as this generation’s literary “That Girl” — the absolutely relatable Marlo Thomas of creative nonfiction, complete with show-stopping smile, sparkling eyes and a love for all creatures, including often-unlovable teenagers and a turtle named Frank. She reels at the news, imaging her parents going about their “regular life” while her father “was doing this not-at-all-regular job,” she writes. Philpott’s teenaged son’s sudden epilepsy diagnosis was the detonation that sparked this book, a lovely wrangling with all matters of family relationships, anxiety, and the madness otherwise known as the modern medical establishment.

The low-hanging-fruit answer is that it is clearly unethical for a student to submit an essay written by ChatGPT. It consists of vague generalities about “a deep appreciation for Indian culture” and “the challenges and opportunities that come with being a first-generation immigrant,” but there is nothing in that paragraph showing how coming from an Indian background has influenced the student’s experience or worldview. Jim Jump is the academic dean and director of college counseling at St. The weakest part of the essay, in fact, is the part dealing with the student’s Indian heritage. The more complicated question is whether it is unethical for a college to require an application essay or make the essay a significant factor in evaluating a student’s application. It referenced the student’s starting as a dishwasher and progressing to researching the restaurant’s competition and identifying its “unique selling points,” and included a Camp Randall Stadium reference. The writer began swimming competitively at the age of nine, the broken shoulder came in a swimming accident and the interest in business came from working in the family restaurant, where he helped his parents with “inventory management, staff scheduling, and customer relations,” as well as marketing and advertising and developing new menu items. I found both essays to resemble cliché essays, with neither answering the prompt in a convincing way. If this sounds like you, then please share your story”—and the other the “Why Wisconsin?” essay from the University of Wisconsin at Madison supplement. ChatGPT poses particular challenges for those of us who love the written word and those of us who work in education. What happens to the humanities when the human component is removed? Having to find the kitty pictures among a mass of images is annoying, although it’s still an improvement on having to type distorted text into a box.
