On the Equipment tab of the pause menu, you can equip these items into each crew member. You can find your current Objectives in the pause menu on the Objectives tab — second from the right. But with the rarity of shops and how quickly the crew gets stronger (see the first point above), we haven’t bought anything yet. If you go too far out of the way, you’ll actually get reset back to a more “appropriate” spot and reminded to follow the path. Instead, you have clear the Objectives manually through the menu. One Piece Odyssey is a love letter to the series with moves, references, characters, and locations from across its 25 year history.

'One Piece Odyssey' beginner's guide: 5 essential tips for the early ... (Inverse)

One Piece Odyssey stars Luffy and crew on a brand-new adventure. Here are a few tips and tricks that will help you survive your playthrough.

Inly use disadvantaged characters with a “weak” move if they’ve proven they could still do tons of damage because of accessories, or if you want to inflict a status condition. If you attack a Power enemy with a Speed character that has a skill that it’s “weak” to, the attack will likely still be weaker than one from a Technique character. Battles start ramping up the difficulty about halfway through the game, so strengthening your characters can help them speed through fights and raise their survivability. One Piece Odyssey actually has other type advantages and resistances outside of the Power, Speed, and Technique triangle. The game encourages experimentation in its [lengthy playtime](https://www.inverse.com/gaming/one-piece-odyssey-playtime-runtime-how-long-to-beat-how-many-hours-chapters), but all its [random encounters](https://www.inverse.com/gaming/one-piece-odyssey-too-many-battles) might inspire you to hurry through the grinding and straight to the action-packed boss battles and cutscenes. Where One Piece Odyssey Fits In The Anime's Timeline (Screen Rant)

One Piece Odyssey doesn't explicitly say when it takes place on the timeline of the One Piece anime, but the new game does drop a few hints.

One Piece rookies might be able to follow One Piece Odyssey's story without being spoiled, but may want to avoid the World of Memories quests until they're all caught up on the anime or manga. One Piece Odyssey takes place between the Whole Cake Island Arc and the Wano Country Arc. [major One Piece story events](https://screenrant.com/one-piece-odyssey-story-dramatic-scenes-gameplay/) occur, so the amounts of their bounties are a good way to judge a chapter’s setting. [need to watch the One Piece anime](https://screenrant.com/one-piece-odyssey-story-watch-anime-read-manga/) or read the manga to understand what’s going on (but having that context couldn’t hurt). Their bounties increase in Wano Country, so One Piece Odyssey must take place between the Whole Cake and Wano Country Arcs. The movie One Piece Film: Red tells a tangential story that takes place in a timeline all its own.

One Piece Odyssey review | The Straw Hat Pirates are back (whynow)

One Piece Odyssey, a new JRPG from ILCA, is one of the first big game releases of the year, but is it any good? Read our review.

Although One Piece Odyssey is based on existing, beloved material, it’s still a little disappointing seeing it give the female characters unrealistically tiny waists and enormous breasts. The dialogue also moves really slowly, and maybe I’m just impatient, but for me, One Piece Odyssey lacked pacing and flow. In between the frequent battles, you have a chance to explore the island you’re stuck on, but this is where the game fares less well. This also stops One Piece Odyssey from becoming just a greatest hits compilation and allows new players and old fans to reconnect with the series in a completely new way. The field is divided into different areas, and your crew is separated into different areas. If you’re an anime fan and a gamer, I’m sure you already know all about One Piece Odyssey, the brand-new JRPG based on popular manga and anime.

Make sure you learn the battle abilities, because you're about to fight the world in a quest to become the most powerful pirate. Pick Every Fight.

Much like enemy grinding above, completing battle tasks can also reward you with a bumper crop of ingredients too. These range from beating a certain enemy with a particular character to wiping out an area full of opponents in one turn. If you've played a JRPG before, you know most of your XP is going to come from challenging monsters, but there are a few more techniques in One Piece Odyssey and many of them just add to the enjoyment.

One Piece Video Games Can't Escape Their Past (The Escapist)

One Piece Odyssey and other anime video games constantly retell existing source material story arcs instead of doing wholly original stories.

You can have a One Piece video game with a long-form original story that has plenty of fan service and uses the plot of the manga to help inform the plot of the game. Producer Katsuaki Tsuzuki stated that the demo wouldn’t include any of the Memories teased in the marketing, and I don’t know if that’s inherently a good or bad thing. Iconic characters from the series make appearances, but they’re blatant recreations and used as a defense mechanism for the island, having these fake versions try to defeat our heroes in order to prevent a monster from being revived. At least from what we know about Odyssey, those moments come across more as pleasing the base, teasing moments and setups that we’ve experienced before, just with a few minor changes. If you wanted to play those games, it would only take you a handful of hours, and then you could play around with the different modes and create your own dream matches to entertain yourself. To make matters worse, it’s a JRPG, so there’s an expectation that this is going to be a several dozen-hour journey that I’m going to be on, with several of those hours dedicated to stories that I already know from front to back. However, the vast majority of anime video games seem to buckle at the mere mention of telling a wholly original story and use the source material as a crutch to justify their existence. It’s not going to advance any of the events that are taking place in the manga and is just meant to be another adventure for the Straw Hat Pirates to go on. There’s a greater discussion to be had with the relationship between non-canon productions / original content and the story as created by the author, but the long and short of it is that most anime fans willingly ignore non-canon plot points due to the deviation from the source material. Bandai Namco has advertised it as an original story, but at the same time it is offering up what the game calls “Memories,” which allows you to revisit islands and story arcs from earlier in the series and experience iconic moments from the series with some revisionist twists. Anime fans also have a weird relationship with original content that wasn’t directly created by the original author. From the Arkham series to Star Wars, from SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom to GoldenEye 007, there’s a certain expectation that video game adaptations will take some liberties and lift elements from the source material in order to make a quality video game.

One Piece Odyssey Review - IGN (IGN)

A classic turn-based RPG in the style of Dragon Quest is not exactly the first place my mind goes when it comes to thinking of game genres that would pair ...

But now, after centuries of servitude, Renfield is finally ready to see if there’s a life away from The Prince of Darkness. Let’s say for example, there’s a group of enemies in one zone that have a weakness to Technique, but my strongest technique character, Zoro, is stuck in a zone with a single enemy that’s weak to Speed. Instead, you just unlock a ton of abilities at once at the conclusion of the chapter, making the feeling of progress uneven. I never grinded – in fact, I ran past a lot of enemies that could’ve given me even more exp – and still felt wildly overpowered for most of the 40 or so hours it took me to reach the end. I can have Usopp, my Speed character, go first by using a ranged attack to hit enemies in other zones to free up Zoro; then, Zoro can clean up the other zone with one of his attacks that hit multiple enemies. Moments like these are the heart of One Piece Odyssey’s story, and they’re brought to life brilliantly thanks to writing that feels totally in step with the anime and manga, excellent performances, and a fantastic art style that authentically translates the unique style of One Piece to 3D. The one complication to all of this is that there are multiple zones in the combat field, and in order for one character to move from one to another, they must first defeat all of the enemies in their own zone. What follows is a grand story that plays out on two fronts: The adventure in Waford sees The Straw Hat crew attempting to help Adio and Lim by defeating a handful of elemental colossi that are responsible for the giant storm that surrounds the island (I know, what’s the worst that could happen?); and another that plays out in Memoria, a world of memory created through Lim’s special ability that allows the Straw Hats to revisit specific locations and events in their history. These come in the form of “what if”-like scenarios that have the crew revisiting pivotal moments from the series with new perspectives. This makes it a tough recommendation for anybody new to the series, but if you’re deeply invested in the world and characters of One Piece, there are some really great payoffs in the Memoria chapters. The Straw Hats make for one hell of a party of RPG characters; Eichiro Oda’s one-of-a-kind art style lends itself well to filling the world with fantastical and amusing creatures; and the over-the-top nature of battles from the actual manga and anime gives plenty of material for some of the coolest (and funniest) special attacks I’ve seen in any turn-based RPG. So much so that, upon first meeting, they steal the powers of the Straw Hats, providing a convenient way to explain why Luffy and company don’t win every battle just by looking at their enemies.

On one hand, One Piece Odyssey’s lack of difficulty makes it approachable to One Piece fans everywhere, including those with little gaming experience. [Siliconera](https://www.siliconera.com/review-one-piece-odyssey-is-an-easy-rpg/), One Piece Odyssey is a fairly easy RPG. As of writing, One Piece Odyssey doesn’t offer optional difficulty modes, but that could change with a future update. The latest video game offering the franchise, One Piece Odyssey, is likewise short for its genre, but at least it has comparatively more meat on its bones than World Seeker. One Piece Odyssey offers plenty of side content to keep players busy and pad out its length, including treasure hunts and bounty missions. However, it still offers plenty of content for One Piece and RPG fans alike.

One Piece Odyssey review: a fun JRPG for fans and newcomers ... (Digital Trends)

“One Piece Odyssey is an anime spinoff JRPG that's a cut above the rest.” Pros. Fun combat; Well-written plot, characters, and dialogue; Awesome exploration ...

It sets out to be a journey that anyone can enjoy, and achieves it by embracing well-established formulas while adding its own flavor into the mix. There are tons of moments where you can tell that the devs are biding time with pointless filler missions that send you back to previous areas. For example, Luffy can use his Gum Gum Bazooka attack to knock opponents to other party member areas, and many times the party member in that Attack Area will have a hilarious reaction to it. You also have access to tons of buff and debuff items that you can utilize to beat strong enemies to gaint more levels. As seen in Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, sometimes less is more, and that works in One Piece Odyssey’s favor. The story is a rather entertaining one thanks to the solid character, plot, and world-building. You can have a celebratory party (in typical Straw Hat fashion) and get bonus experience in the following battles, or you can seek out specific enemies that give experience bonuses. The team quickly learns that this island is more than meets the eye when they come in contact with a giant fire guardian, and their abilities are scattered around Waford in the form of memory cubes. And thankfully, its twists, small nods, excellent characters that are easy to understand, and several epic moments help bring the narrative together. If there’s one JRPG series I could compare One Piece Odyssey to, it’s Dragon Quest. When I began my adventure with the Straw Hat Pirate crew in One Piece Odyssey, I was taken aback by the beautiful virtual world in front of me. [new Japanese role-playing game spinoff](https://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/crisis-core-final-fantasy-vii-reunion-review/) of the hugely popular manga and anime series.
