“I’m vacating my titles and moving up to super-bantamweight, and I think that goal can become a reality in the near future.” Inoue said there was “a lot of talent in the super-bantamweight division” and he is willing to bide his time to reach the top. “It took me four years and eight months to go through the bantamweight division and I think it will probably take the same amount of time in super-bantamweight,” said Inoue, who has said he intends to retire at 35. “To be undisputed champion in two weight classes would be a world’s first and a fantastic achievement, and that’s something I want to aim for.” “Even moving up to super-bantamweight, I still want to aim to become the undisputed champion,” he said. The 29-year-old Inoue, who has a 24-0 record with 21 knock-outs, said he was moving up a weight class because there was “nothing left to do and no one I want to fight” in the bantamweight division.

Naoya Inoue has paved the way to usher in a new era of top bantamweights as he sets his sights on becoming a four-division champion.

That would leave Butler to challenge for his old title versus number-four-ranked Reymart Gaballo, barring a massive ratings shakeup prior to the next ordered title fight. Both won separate semi-final eliminators and were prepared to fight for the interim title but will now likely meet for the real thing. Nevertheless, it’s clearly a problem for the WBC to resolve. The feat was accomplished with his eleventh-round knockout of England’s Paul Butler, adding the WBO belt to his collection of lineal, WBC, WBA and IBF titles on December 13 in Tokyo. Inoue revealed even after his repeat win over Nonito Donaire last June 9 to unify three titles that he would only stay at bantamweight long enough to collect the last belt. “In 2023, I would like to move up one weight class and challenge the super bantamweight division.
