In front of a record crowd of 54,589, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel overwhelmed the Bay Area Dragons in the winner-take-all Game 7 of the Finals, 114-99, to claim the 2022 PBA Commissioner's Cup crown on Sunday at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan.

Barangay Ginebra have won the 2022-23 PBA Commissioner's Cup after a 114-99 triumph over Bay Area Dragons in Game 7 of the finals.

The title allowed Ginebra to break a three-way tie with the Alaska and Magnolia franchises for second-most in league history. 1 with 25. It marks the 15th PBA championship for the Ginebra franchise, but just the third won in the Commissioner's Cup.

Thompson and Japeth Aguilar each had 10 points in the pivotal second quarter, where Ginebra made 12 of 25 field goals and limited the Dragons to just 6-of-26 from the field. The Dragons weathered a fast start from Brownlee to trail by just six points, 27-21, after the opening quarter. The Gin Kings gave them a performance to remember, with newly-naturalized star Justin Brownlee leading the way. [Bay Area] kept fighting, but we had the fight in us, too."

The Dragons’ woes only got worse at the turn of the second half as the Gin Kings pushed their lead as high as 28 points, 75-47, off 5 straight points from Malonzo with 8:26 left in the third period on the way to a dominant finish. From a small 31-27 advantage early in the second quarter, Ginebra broke apart Bay Area’s defense – and ultimately, the guest team’s morale, after outscoring its foes with a huge 30-12 breakaway, emphatically capped off by a Japeth Aguilar putback dunk for a 61-39 gap to greet the halftime buzzer. Justin Brownlee capped off another magical series with a game-high 34 points, while Jamie Malonzo – who dropped a huge double-double of 22 points and 17 rebounds – also came through for the Gin Kings in front of nearly 55,000 fans.

One with [Andrew] Nicholson and he played one way. “Ironically, we didn’t want to play Game 7. We were angry about having to play Game 7, but I thought the guys put their anger where it needed to be, and came out and played a really great one.” Ginebra had to deal with plenty of adjustments facing the Dragons, particularly after Nicholson got hurt in Game 3 when he rolled his left ankle, having to play without a reinforcement in Games 4 and 5 and activating Powell for the final two matches of the series.
