Shifting from jobs to work (The Manila Times)

SOME companies today continue to be managed using the old concepts of command and control, hierarchical organizations and job descriptions.

This is the best time for the CEOs and the CHROs to let go of old notions about managing people, about the organization structure, and the kind of architecture and legacies from the founding fathers that must perhaps go, to give way to an organization with systems and architecture that will be relevant in the future. The CEOs and the chief human resources officers (CHROs) must seriously start re-imagining the kind of organization they will need in the post-pandemic workplace. One of these things that need to go is our old notion of jobs, around which we build our organization structure and the careers of our people. Skills to produce and market new products could be different from skills that old or current jobs require. This is my point about the coming "demise of jobs" that was the subject of my January 12 column in The Manila Times. The Covid-19 pandemic accelerated many of the changes that were about to happen in the world of work by three years at least. We in HR had to complement the succession planning system with robust training and development strategies. In today's market, the stability of jobs is questionable. In many parts of the world, hundreds of millions of people have lost their full-time jobs since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. In his 2022 book titled Irresistible, Josh Bersin wrote, "The bottom line is this: we have moved from an economy where your employer defines your career to one where your skills, experience and ambition drive success. By and large, people were told by bosses, "Just do your job well, and I will take care of your career." Ironically, we are now operating in a new economy where the incidence of free-lancers, part-timers, contingent workers and gig workers are rising to levels never heard before.

Failure of leadership (The Manila Times)

Four decades later, in 2022, survey results showed that "fully half of all Filipino families are poor, and only one-fifth are not poor, despite a doubling in ...

I discussed in the past that the high prices of sugar and onion were failures in policy making. This is aggravated by the spread of the avian flu. As animal feeds constitute more than half of the production cost of poultry and hog ventures, an increase in prices results in costlier final outputs (pork, chicken meat and eggs). In a way, the failure of leadership is already being manifested in skyrocketing prices of basic food commodities in the Philippines. The same is true with the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) with regard to rice. And now, chicken eggs, one of the cheapest protein sources of the poor, is becoming unaffordable. The economic transformation of China, meanwhile, happened during the leadership of Deng Xiaoping who took over in 1978. He abandoned the socialist economic dogma and embraced market capitalism to induce efficiency in the slumbering Chinese economy. The economic transformations of South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore occurred within three decades. Similarly, Taiwan and Singapore were poor island economies that offered little natural resources to the world in the 1960s. After "40 years of poverty surveying" (the column's title), the SWS discovered that the plight of poor Filipinos hardly changed during the last four decades. After Park Chung-Hee took over in 1961, he transformed the South Korean economy into an industrial powerhouse in just a couple of decades.

Why I can't retire - Manila Standard (manilastandard.net)

“For the nth time, I wish President Bongbong Marcos would certify as urgent and a priority the Senate Bill creating the DDR or Department of Disaster ...

We are like priests and nuns who are committed to the truth. It’s all part of the operations. In the case of the more than 65,000 passengers, there is a need to revise the Rights of Air Passengers Act on cases like the glitch in NAIA. To me, it was the height of stupidity on the part of the CCAP, and as an observer, all the CAAP officials should be fired, my gulay! It was a truly international embarrassment, with some 65,000 passengers stranded and with the airlines unable to help passengers with anything. I covered Customs for some years, and I know this Mafia sacrifices a small portion of the smuggled shipments to be seized to satisfy the government. Although I am also a lawyer and a member of the Philippine Bar, I stuck to being a journalist, despite the fact that I did not continue with being a lawyer because of my love for the challenges that came my way as a journalist. From the source of the smuggled goods, to the vessels that come to the Philippines, to the ports of entry often bypassing Customs, the smugglers are fully in control. Journalists like me, if they are honest and believe in the unwritten ethics of journalists, that we should always be truthful, fair and stick to the tenets of balanced reporting, stay on despite all the threats and challenges that come our way. I mention, in the wake of journalists like me being unable to retire because they have no retirement fund and pension fund, they can expect that when they become elderly like me they will have nothing to back them up. When I went to the SSS to find out why, I was told that it was only the defunct Philippines Herald that complied with the SSS mandate to contribute to the System. Santa Banana, I hate to mention it, but for all the years that I have been working (over 75 years) in media outlets (print, radio and television), the only pension fund I can rely on is a little over P3,000 a month from the SSS.

Celdran did that to express his disapproval of Church meddling in legislation and other political concerns. These lying and cheating friars were lascivious, greedy and drunk with the political power they enjoyed during those colonial times of union of Church and State. Padre Salvi lusts for Maria Clara.
