All of this is extremely reminiscent of Anthem, BioWare’s failed live service shooter that assembled a niche of fans, but ultimately failed to live up to its promise. All of this means that Winter Soldier is the last hero added to the game. But a lack of meaningful expansion content, not enough new enemies and bosses and a forever-awkward loot system where you’d collect gear you’d never see your character actually wear sunk its live service ambitions. Very few games survive this gauntlet, among them the likes of Destiny 2 and Genshin Impact. But the game appearing for free on PS Plus and Xbox Game Pass did help out with its overall playerbase, and cosmetic skin sales funded development for longer than it might have gone on otherwise. Even recently we were still getting hints about new heroes like She-Hulk coming and a Kree invasion expansion, but now none of that will come to pass. EA chose to kill it, and retask BioWare to only develop its older franchises, a new Dragon Age and Mass Effect game. However, after that point, you will no longer be able to purchase a copy of the game. It's a similar result here. The Cloning Lab is the last playable content. After that, there will be no new content or additions. And it wouldn’t even be for sale anymore either, soon enough.

Additionally, a final scheduled update will supposedly address mobility balancing across the current superhero roster in response to complaints older heroes feel "more sluggish" than newer additions. Current and former employees approached for Ross' report are said to have described the Marvel's Avengers project as a "fountain of potential kneecapped by inept studio management and Marvel Games bureaucracy", with unreleased content - which will now never see the light of day - including a free-roaming boss-based bounty mode known as Patrol Mode, plus additional heroes Marvel's Avengers will reportedly remain on sale digitally until "at least September", with efforts being made "to keep the game playable for existing owners as long as possible." As part of a planned "exit strategy" for Marvel's Avengers following official news of its demise, Crystal Dynamics will reportedly release a number of key systems changes, including the removal of artificial time-gating and an overhaul to cosmetic microtransactions. Finally, as a "show of our appreciation" to the game's community, all Marketplace, Challenge Card, and Shipment cosmetics - including Outfits, Takedowns, Emotes, and Nameplates - will be made free to all players from 31st March "onwards".

The game received mixed reviews upon release with critics citing repetition, and technical issues as two of the main sticking points. Marvel's Avengers will no longer offer post-game support from 30th September 2023. There are multiple underlying reasons for this.
The Avengers game had a lot of potential if Crystal Dynamics focused on making a game like God of War. Let us hope that the next studio who takes in an Avengers or a Marvel-related game is passionate about the characters and their origin stories. By the time Winter Soldier was announced, the game had lost 2/3 of its fanbase. The character interactions felt forced and had no life in them. It would have been a different story if they had ignored marketing and spent all the budget on the game itself. Crystal Dynamics had a great opportunity with this franchise as they had the groundwork laid out for them.

With its bullet-sponge enemies and 'RPG mechanics' (read: endless grind for better gear), it'd be a chore to play even if it wasn't also a storefront for predatory microtransactions. I'm sure it's far from the last, though, for as long as Destiny keeps printing money devs will keep aping it. Ultimately, Marvel's Avengers proved to be yet another case of a misguided studio trying to get a live-service cash cow for themselves, and only discovering new and innovative ways to alienate their consumer base in the process.
