Preview, injury report, odds, and television listing for the NBA game between the Atlanta Hawks and Oklahoma City Thunder on January 25, 2023.

Combine the postseason implications with Young's homecoming, and plenty is at stake tonight. Trae Young is shooting a career-worst 31.4% from deep on the fewest attempts since his rookie season. Their defense is inconsistent and outside shooting is nonexistent. Meanwhile, the Atlanta Hawks have a less promising outlook. Much to Presti's delight, the young squad he has built is already ahead of schedule. General manager Sam Presti has built a war chest of future first-round draft picks.

Recap: Thunder vs. Hawks (OKCThunder.com)

By halftime of Wednesday night's start of a three-game homestand for the Thunder, the game was tied at 77 all.

It was transition, it was fouling, there was a little bit of the glass and then just the lack of discipline, in our help. Kenrich Williams and Aaron Wiggins both came up with steals that set OKC out on the break and led to easy buckets in transition. Aaron Wiggins sparked the run with a 3-pointer and then it was all defense that forced Nate McMillan to call a timeout. Gilgeous-Alexander bounced a pass into the lane for him, and Williams finished with a crafty layup up and under the two converging defenders for two crucial points. Breaking a 77-77 tie at the break, the Thunder jumped out to a 10-5 run and it was catalyzed by a defense-to-offense sequence. After a raging offensive performance in the first half, the Thunder came out of the locker room in the third quarter with a premium focus on the defensive end. The Thunder forced four Atlanta turnovers and generated six points off those turnovers in the third frame alone. Paris: Ousmane Dieng missed the previous 23 games for the Thunder with a non-displaced fracture in his wrist. On the very next possession, Williams thanked Wiggins with an in-rhythm pass to the shooting pocket, and Wiggins buried a three from nearly the same spot that Joe did one play sooner. The bucket was one of six 3-pointers that the Thunder made in the first quarter alone. In clutch time, the Thunder’s 28th such game this season, rookie Jalen Williams blocked a shot and picked Hawks guard Trae Young’s pocket out top, which resulted in a pair of fast break dunks to help give the Thunder a chance. By halftime of Wednesday night’s start of a three-game homestand for the Thunder, the game was tied at 77 all.

Young played a strong game, as did most of the team last night to be fair, and they shot a fantastic percentage from the field: 59.5%, a season-high for the Hawks. Hitting 11 threes behind strong nights from Bogdanovic and Young as well as getting to the free throw line for 33 attempts, a really strong night offensively for Atlanta. I thought Aaron (Holiday) really came in and got some good pressure on the basketball, didn’t allow them to get downhill and I thought our guys basically responded to Aaron establishing the pressure and the control of the ball.” “Oklahoma City is a tough team, they make you work on both ends of the floor and I thought our second unit came in and gave us a lift — both halves — certainly to start the fourth quarter, getting some stops and building a lead for us,” said McMillan postgame. “I thought our bigs did a really good job in the first half of pounding the paint, the offensive glass,” said McMillan. However, the Hawks did have possession of the ball after said basket, and with the shotclock off the game was still in their hands so long as they could ice it from the free throw line. In the past, the Hawks have rested Young at the start of these periods and how often did they find themselves either having to bring Young back in earlier than they wanted or falling behind by too much before he even got back in? Having played all 12 minutes of the third quarter, the Thunder obviously needed to rest Gilgeous-Alexander at some point but without him to begin the fourth quarter the Thunder’s offense slowed to standstill in his absence and the Thunder fell behind by 13 points as a result. “We didn’t play in our shift defense the first half and they were pretty much walking into the paint and walking to the basket on us most of the game. It wasn’t until the 6:32 mark in the fourth until Gilgeous-Alexander returned to the game. It’s just interesting to see how teams handle this underrated crucial stretch of a game when a team holds a minor lead heading into the fourth. It soon got out of hand, however, and with no De’Andre Hunter (missing a second consecutive game with asthma) to take the challenge, Gilgeous-Alexander thrived.
