[Magic Mike’s Last Dance](https://www.avclub.com/film/reviews/magic-mike-s-last-dance-2023). [Your Place Or Mine](https://www.avclub.com/film/reviews/your-place-or-mine-2023) is a rom-com in which a house swap leads to sparks flying. Waking up and avoiding your phone for the first 30 minutes, journaling, calling your loved ones, taking a breath before you make a decision, decluttering your home—these are all simple activities that can create drastic changes. She had always enjoyed the sport, but her new, intense regimen offers a distraction from grief, even as she encounters cultural and economic obstacles. Pampa is 9 when an encounter with a goddess brings her fantastical power: She speaks a mythical city into existence, tying her own fate to its destiny over the next 250 years. In her second novel, Adébáyò looks at two young people in Nigeria with vastly different economic circumstances whose lives intersect amid a period of political and cultural struggle. But video games and all manner of geek culture provided him an escape, and the author, now a doctoral candidate in English at the University of Pennsylvania, spins it into a brilliant coming-of-age story. In his first book, Thomas details a difficult childhood in Philadelphia. Harris’s earlier book “Kids These Days” was a broad cultural history of millennials, zeroing in on the unfair economic stereotypes that have dogged the generation. Enriquez’s frightening short stories have made her one of the most popular Latin American authors writing today. Translated by Megan McDowell Infidelity, jealousy, malevolent neediness — there’s all manner of abhorrent behavior in this study of some notably unhappy relationships. There’s plenty of action and bloodshed in this novel, the first in a promised trilogy. As he guides readers along a Nefertiti to TikTok continuum, he shows how cultural exchange and innovation help societies address some of life’s most existential questions. 7

The February Drop: Find your true love, be it Scrabble or silent films (wgbh.org)

Be your best self this month with these free and cheap-ish things to do around Boston.

If you’ve got an impressionable and curious youth in your charge, then thank heavens, for the Museum of Science, which wants us to understand our world just a little bit better. There used to be a time, before an artist was scheduled to drop a new album, that people would gather in one place to hear bits and pieces of the soon to be released project. The Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Athenæum are teaming up to present a program that, in all technicality, could be described as a multimedia experience. Nonetheless, if you can make the (shortish) Saturday morning trip out to the Harbor Islands, and join the assembly on the drumlins of World’s End, you’ll be doing a most noble service to the park. Maybe you discovered a small thing for board games early on in our pandemic decade. In February, they’ll be posting up at Lamplighter Broadway on back-to-back Sundays, feeding mouths for a set three hour period, or until the kitchen is empty. The Boston native has once again assembled her trio, including pianist Neil Pearlman and violist Shauncey Ali, to commit a new set of Celtic tunes to wax. Please, stay hydrated and moisturized, for this cold air is no friend to your skin, and the air indoors can be quite dry. Composer and educator Jeff Rapsis will be providing music to accompany the screening. Maybe I should go on a hike, or volunteer to take care of a local park. Keep that same energy for the other 27 days of the month and care about you. It’s a time to show that special someone that you care about them.

9 Fantastic Sci-Fi and Fantasy Books For February (Literary Hub)

Riveting and Romantic Reads From Roshani Chokshi, Brent C. Lambert, S.B. Divya, and More. By Natalie Zutter. February 1, 2023.

Lambert has shared on Twitter](https://twitter.com/BrentCLambert/status/1608085356733136899/photo/1), this is a world in which the dramatic conflict comes not from racism or homophobia, but from the push-and-pull of yearning versus duty to your side. [Here’s how you can support the HarperCollins Union](https://linktr.ee/hcpunion). A spotty memory of the play is no hurdle, as Veronica Roth (perhaps best known for the dystopian YA Divergent series) breaks down the double helix of the Greek play and reforms it into a thrilling dystopian novella. Despite the genderswap, the themes of the Japanese folktale remain; but instead of a crane wife plucking out her feathers so that her husband won’t know of her true form, it’s a crane husband who crowds into a farmhouse without bothering to hide what he really is. This novella sounds charming as heck: Secondary world contemporary fantasy in which two queer Black mages, Althus and Vade, are assigned to spy on one another. Teenage royal heir Glorian Berethnet, like her eventual Priory descendant Sabran the Ninth, struggles to live up to the family legend of ancient knight Galian, revered for banishing the wyrm known as the Nameless One. Despite it being seven years since Lovecraft Country was published, half of that time has passed for the characters at the heart of Matt Ruff’s horror fantasy novel and its sequel. This speculative noir is set in an alternate-universe 2009 in which the United States cowers from Argentina’s use of “psychopigments” to win the Falklands War. But there’s always the possibility that future generations have learned, which is where Jayanthi comes in: A human raised by alloys (Earthlings’ descendents from their initial space forays), she believes that she can make a case for settling the new planet Meru, with her sickle cell anemia being an advantage for survival. The latter is a double-edged sword, as they are being stalked by the Order, an immortality cult tied to Juan’s wife’s family: If they discover that Gaspar has manifested the terminally ill Juan’s abilities, then they will take him to contact the dead; if they believe that he has not, then they will kill Gaspar in order to prolong Juan’s lifetime, no matter how cruelly. Like two speculative novels contending with Argentina’s period of dictatorship—one an alternate universe where it continues on, the other a ghostly grief story that happens to inhabit the same real-world timeline. One is sharp and cruel, the other lush and sumptuous.

Department Press Briefing - February 1, 2023 - United States ... (Department of State)

Washington, D.C.. February 1, 2023. Article Index. DEPARTMENT/AFRICA; MOZAMBIQUE; UN; NORTH KOREA; CHINA/AFRICA; RUSSIA/UKRAINE ...

What I will echo is what I said to Said’s question, which is that to countries around the world, including on the African continent – and the ambassador spoke to this a great deal – we have been very clear about that in the context of the conflict in Ukraine, Russia is infringing on the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine. Are you in touch with the Treasury about this meeting and do you have any comments on the status of Türkiye’s compliance with Russia sanctions? But what I will say is that Secretary Blinken, to his counterparts and to leaders around the world – the United States has had a consistent message as it relates to Russia, which is that Russia is – it is incumbent on Russia to cease its aggression and to remove its troops from Ukraine’s soil to achieve a just and durable peace. I will of course let the South Koreans speak to their own efforts as it relates to our Ukrainian partners, but what I can say broadly is that, of course, South Korea is an important ally and partner in the Indo-Pacific as it relates to a variety of shared priorities between the Republic of Korea and the United States as well. Is – what else is – what is the U.S. MR PATEL: Guita, we have not hesitated to take action as a country through our own designations, through designations in multilateral fora, and through designations with our allies and partners to hold the Iranian regime accountable. [ In terms of our message on Ukraine and the war in Ukraine, our message is also very consistent: Russia’s unprovoked war on Ukraine is also an attack on the UN Charter. I mean the – the blockade that has gone on now for 16 years makes life in Gaza – despite efforts by Egypt and others and so on to alleviate the suffering, the suffering is increasing tenfold and eightfold and so on. We’re not new to the African continent; I’m not new to the African continent. And unfortunately, the Security Council, the other 13 members of the Security Council, have been consistent and strong in wanting to condemn DPRK, and we will continue to work to do that, particularly as we see more and more tests being done by the DPRK. As you know, the President announced in September during High-Level Week that we support UN Security Council reform and we support additional permanent members of the Security Council as well as new elected members of the Security Council. I spent a lot of time on Cabo Delgado when I was there, in discussions with the government as well as the UN and our embassy there on the ground.
